Cross-cultural differences in processes underlying sequential cognitive activity

Abstract: Similarities and differences in the processes underlying performance on the Stroop Color-Word Test (Card A, 100 color words/black ink; Card B, 100 color patches; Card C, 100 color words/incongruous ink color) were investigated with Japanese ( N = 96) and Americans ( N = 96) with stimulus items read: (a) vertically, top to bottom; and (b) horizontally, left to right. Total time as well as errors, namely, those involved with the underlying processes of identification and sequential organization, were significantly longer or more frequent on Card C than on Cards A and B for both nationalities and spatial arrangements. Further, greater frequency of serial organization errors in females than in males was obtained for the Japanese group, and the opposite for the American group. The implications and directions for future research are discussed.

Moral reasoning and emphasis on different kinds of moral content

A test designed to differentiate between conventional and postconventional moral reasoning was completed by 56 university students, who also rated positive and negative items in four general moral content areas. Postconventionality was related to relatively greater stress on social and especially on international moral content. Overall and within-area differences were discussed with reference to the structural characteristics of each type of moral orientation, especially the consequences of the postconventional capacity to apply ideal role-taking in moral reasoning.     

Effects of colour on perceived depth: Review of experiments and evalutaion of theories

A selective and evaluative review of experiments and theories dealing with the effect of colour on perceived depth is presented. It has long been known that equidistant objects that differ in colour may appear as if they are located at different distances. The present paper emphasizes the theoretical importance of distinguishing between monocular and binocular effects. There is at present no completely satisfactory explanation of the monocular effect but chromatic aberration seems to be a critical factor. The binocular effect (colour stereoscopy) is most probably due to disparity between differently coloured images on the retinae. The stereoscopic theories of Einthoven (1885) and Vos (1960, 1963, 1966) are discussed; available evidence favours the latter.     

A Self Psychologist in Couplesland: Multisubjective Approach to Transference and Countertransference-Like Phenomena in Marital Relationships

This essay introduces the reader to some basic self psychological concepts that have useful applications to couples therapy. Two points are highlighted. First, the therapist must be constantly aware of the narcissistic vulnerability of each of the participants. Second, the working through of transference and countertransference-like experiences within the marital dyad is just as central to an understanding of the curative process in couples treatment as it is within the patient/therapist dyad in individual treatment.
