The present study was conducted to determine if children under the age of 18 months can exhibit delayed imitation of three-event sequences when they have no opportunity to practice. Twenty-three 14- to 16-month-old children underwent two different imitation conditions. In the practice condition the children could imitate the sequence immediately after modelling; then they were tested 1 or 7 days later. In the no practice condition the children had the chance to imitate only on the test day. Children were able to imitate the sequences under both conditions irrespective of the delay period. They produced significantly more target actions, and more target actions in the correct order, in the test phase and cued recall phase, compared with the baseline. There were no differences between the two conditions with a 1-day delay period, but after a 7-day delay, the number of target actions produced during the practice condition was significantly higher than those in the no practice condition. The results are discussed in terms of nonverbal mimetic representations. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Cueing paradigms have become popular in assessing the processes of attention. In two experiments we manipulated (i) the contrast of the target, and (ii) the similarity between the targets discriminated. We used a cue that would isolate the exogenous component of attention. Both a reduction in target contrast and an increase in target similarity raised overall reaction times by a similar amount; however, the target contrast manipulation produced a much greater cueing effect compared with the target similarity manipulation. The results suggest that manipulation of target contrast changes the attention cueing effect at a stage of attracting attention to a location of the target (the 'move' stage), rather than at a later processing stage.  相似文献

Young separated refugees are exiled from familiar places and on seeking asylum encounter new, potentially alienating, places. Yet, there is limited research regarding the effects of location on the psychological experiences of young separated refugees. This study explores the relationships that young adults who arrived in the UK as separated refugees have with the spaces that they inhabit and the consequences of these. It draws on qualitative interviews with young men from Iraq and Afghanistan who are living in London. Four key themes emerged from the analysis. Participants felt frustrated in bureaucratic settings where processes of labelling and physical manipulation prevented their sense of subjectivity from being expressed. Certain community spaces offered a rich range of support. Micro‐spaces of belonging and embodied processes of exploration in the wider community were also reported to be psychologically beneficial. The themes suggest that considerations of young separated refugees' relations to place may provide alternative psychological understandings of their experiences, particularly in relation to concepts such as trauma. Schizophrenia and intellectual disability (ID) co-occur three times more than would be expected by chance. This has led to speculation that a particular form of schizophrenia may give rise to both the symptoms of schizophrenia and the intellectual impairment. If this was the case, one may expect the presentation of schizophrenia in an ID population to differ from that in a population with average/high IQ. A systematic review and meta-analysis was undertaken of studies comparing the clinical presentation of schizophrenia in people with mild/borderline ID to that in people with average/high IQ. Five studies were eligible for inclusion. Four reported more negative symptoms in the ID population, while two reported more positive symptoms. Meta-analysis demonstrated that the ID population experienced more negative symptoms. The available evidence supports the proposal that the clinical presentation of schizophrenia in an ID population differs from that in a population with normal IQ.  相似文献

The capacity to perceive internal bodily states is linked to emotional awareness and effective emotional regulation. We explore individual differences in emotional awareness in relation to the fading affect bias (FAB), which refers to the greater dwindling of unpleasant compared to pleasant emotions in autobiographical memory. We consider interoceptive awareness and alexithymia in relation to the FAB, and private event rehearsal as a mediating process. With increasing interoceptive awareness, there was an enhanced FAB, but with increasing alexithymia, there was a decreased FAB. Further, the effects of interoceptive awareness were partially mediated by private rehearsal of pleasant events. We provide novel evidence that capacity for emotional awareness and thus effective processing is an important factor predictive of the FAB. Moreover, our results imply an important role for maintaining positive affect in the FAB. Our findings offer new insights into the effects of interoception and alexithymia on autobiographical memory, and support concepts of the FAB emerging as a result of adaptive emotional regulation processes.  相似文献

Testosterone levels have been shown to decrease in the face of social defeat in several mammalian species. Among humans, the loss of social status has been studied primarily in the context of athletic competition, with winners having higher testosterone levels than losers. This study examined testosterone levels in relation to peer victimization (bullying) in a sample of 151 boys and girls aged 12–13. Statistically controlling for age and pubertal status, results indicated that on average verbally bullied girls produced less testosterone and verbally bullied boys produced more testosterone than their nonbullied counterparts. Similar trends were evident comparing social and physical bullying with testosterone. Sex differences are discussed in terms of empirically validated differences in coping styles, as girls tend to internalize, whereas boys tend to externalize, their abuse. Aggr. Four experiments on pattern perception in 4-month-old infants are reported. The first two experiments examined the perception of pattern structure as defined by Garner (1974). Although the infants did not show an immediate preference for well-structured patterns (Experiment 1), during habituation they showed a reliable decrement in looking only to well-structured patterns (Experiment 2). On recovery trials in Experiment 2 infants were presented with two types of pattern change: a new configuration of the habituation pattern and a change in the orientation of the habituation pattern. The infants recovered looking to the orientation change, but generally not to the changes in configuration. It is argued that the results of Experiment 2 highlight the role of symmetry, especially vertical symmetry, in infant pattern perception. Recovery of looking to changes in the orientation, size, and position of the habituation pattern was examined in Experiments 3 and 4 where it was demonstrated that such changes are salient to the infant, arguably because of the presence of a surrounding, external frame.  相似文献

Newborn attention to, and discrimination of, facelike patterns was examined in three experiments employing 35 one- to three-day-old infants. Differential eye tracking and head turning to three moving stimuli (a schematic face, a scrambled face, and a luminance-matched blank) were measured in two of the three experiments. The newborns turned their eyes and heads farther to follow patterned stimuli, containing facelike features, than to a luminance-matched blank, but they did not turn farther to a stimulus with the features arranged in a facelike manner compared to features scrambled. A third experiment tested newborns' ability to discriminate between the facelike and scrambled face patterns. Using an infant-controlled procedure, infants showed similar initial fixation times and similar numbers of trials to reach a 60% response decrement criterion to both patterned stimuli. Following habituation, novelty responding indicated that infants discriminated between the schematic face and the scrambled face patterns. Although infants did not show a preference for a facelike stimulus compared to a features-scrambled pattern in the present experiments, they could discriminate the two patterns based on the internal arrangement of the facial features.  相似文献
