The study, on which this article is based, explored the ways in which primary school children in an urban (city centre) setting experience the assets and resources that support their learning. The researchers used a qualitative phenomenological research design incorporating an interpretive and constructivist perspective. The study was conducted in a primary school in Tshwane, Gauteng province, South Africa. The participants were eight African female participants in Grades 5–7 who had overcome extrinsic barriers to learning. They participated in a focus group discussion during which the relevant and natural units of significant statements were listed (horizontalisation) and structured into central clusters of meanings. Textural themes (what) and structural themes (how) were identified. The study found that human resource assets were central to the process of connecting a variety of assets that supported learning. The study also found a significant compound effect of assets, for example increased connected assets had a noteworthy additional positive effect on learning support. The identified assets interrelatedly mobilised other assets (textural findings) on one of five levels (structural findings: physical assets, social assets, safety assets, esteem assets and self-actualisation) in various systems and contexts that contribute to learning support. The moderating effect of kinship social support on the association of family financial pressure with socioemotional adjustment was examined in 200 African American mothers and adolescents. Financial pressure was positively associated with mothers’ depressive symptoms and negatively related to mothers’ optimism about the future. Financial pressure was also positively associated with adolescents’ depressive symptoms and problem behavior. Kin social support was negatively linked to mothers’ depressive symptoms and positively associated with optimism. Kin support was negatively related to adolescents’ problem behavior. Kinship support moderated the association of family financial pressure with mothers’ and adolescents’ adjustment. Positive association of financial pressure with mothers’ depression was less apparent for mothers with more compared to less kin social support. Also, negative association of financial pressure with mothers’ optimism was less apparent for mothers with more compared to less kin social support. Positive relation of financial pressure with adolescents’ problem behavior was less apparent for those with more compared to less kin social support. The need to assess the links of kin social support to other domains of family life such as marital relations is discussed.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to compare personality resemblance in four independent Croatian samples using the same family study design, but different measures of five-factor personality traits. The family study design can provide evidence of familial aggregation of personality and of assortative mating. Father-mother correlations, father-offspring correlations, mother-offspring correlations and regressions of offspring on midparent score were computed for five broad personality domains in each sample. Father-mother correlations ranged between ?.12 and .27 across different samples and questionnaires, while father-offspring correlations ranged between .04 and .34, mother-offspring correlations between ?.01 and .28 and regressions of offspring on midparent scores between .05 and .35. These results are congruent with earlier findings of: (a) low assortative mating for personality, and (b) moderate familial aggregation of personality, which is lower compared to heritability estimates from earlier studies using twin design. Familial aggregation is mostly comparable in size across four different five-factor questionnaires suggesting that, from a behavior genetic perspective, conclusions on family resemblance should not differ depending on the five-factor personality questionnaire used.  相似文献

Approximately 25 % of individuals undergoing genetic counseling for cancer experiences clinically relevant levels of distress, anxiety and/or depression. However, these general psychological outcomes that are used in many studies do not provide detailed information on the specific psychosocial problems experienced by counselees. The aim of this review was to investigate the specific psychosocial issues encountered by individuals undergoing genetic counseling for cancer, and to identify overarching themes across these issues. A literature search was performed, using four electronic databases (PubMed, PsychInfo, CINAHL and Embase). Papers published between January 2000 and January 2013 were selected using combinations, and related indexing terms of the keywords: ‘genetic counseling’, ‘psychology’ and ‘cancer’. In total, 25 articles met our inclusion criteria. We identified the specific issues addressed by these papers, and used meta-ethnography to identify the following six overarching themes: coping with cancer risk, practical issues, family issues, children-related issues, living with cancer, and emotions. A large overlap in the specific issues and themes was found between these studies, suggesting that research on specific psychosocial problems within genetic counseling has reached a point of saturation. As a next step, efforts should be made to detect and monitor these problems of counselees at an early stage within the genetic counseling process.  相似文献

This study examined attributions for poverty and beliefs about upward mobility among 124 Mexican immigrant farm workers. The effects of gender and length of United States residency were also analyzed. Despite living in poverty and perceiving racism as a significant problem, respondents expected upward mobility for themselves and their children. Consistent with previous research on low‐income and ethnic minority attributions (Bullock, 1999; Hunt, 1996; Kluegel & Smith, 1986), structural explanations for poverty were favored over individualistic causes, however, considerable support for individualistic causes was also expressed. Gender and length of residency were not predictive of immigrants’ beliefs about poverty. Implications for future research are discussed.  相似文献

Based on Lazarus and Folkman's 1984 Stress-Coping Model, a self-report measure for children between 8 and 12 years of age was constructed. It is called the Stress and Coping Questionnaire for Children (School version and Asthma version) and measures children's emotional responses and coping strategies when they confront school-related and asthma-related stressors. The factor structure of this questionnaire was assessed and cross-validated in two samples, one of 392 primary school children without a chronic disease and one of 119 children with asthma. Five scales of coping strategies with regard to two school-related stressors and one asthma-related stressor were distinguished in a reliable way, Approach, Avoidance, Seeking Social Support, Aggression, and Crying.  相似文献

Eighteen healthy male volunteers, 21–26 years old, participated in a study intended to detect cortical control of beat-to-beat heart rate variability independent of the effects on breathing and mean heart rate. They were tested while seated and standing relaxed (baseline), and while performing tasks requiring concentrated attention while sitting. The mental concentration elicited a typical cardiorespiratory response manifested by moderate acceleration and shallowing of respiration with a small increase of mean heart rate (HR), a pattern already widely acknowledged as typically associated with concentration. With the aid of a variable tone delivered to the ear as a guide, the subjects were trained to breathe at the same rate without concentrating in order to test the influence of respiration on the concentration pattern. ECG, thermistor pneumogram and ear-lobe photo-plethysmogram were recorded and data reduction was performed on 3 minute or 1 minute data sequences selected for the best steady-state. Statistical treatment was limited to a subgroup of 10 subjects in whom there was no overlapping of the spectra of respiratory and Traube-Hering-Mayer sinus arrhythmia (RSA and THM-SA, respectively). Mental concentration elicited significant depression of both RSA and THM-SA even if the respiratory parameters were kept constant.  相似文献

Adolescent educable retardates made size discriminations between pairs of equal-sized geometric forms presented tachistoscopically (Experiment I) or manually with unlimited exposure (Experiment II). There was no side preference under tachistoscopic presentation. Under unlimited exposure Ss showed a strong preference to choose the right-side stimulus as the larger (59.1%). Normals, from previous studies, had a preference to perceive the right-hand stimulus as larger under both conditions.  相似文献

The purpose of this article is to delineate some of the consequential aspects of the intrinsic duality that is created in the pursuit of knowledge around positive psychological and asset-based constructs. I will reflect on what we have learned during studies in educational psychology that focused on assets and strengths, by drawing on highlights from particularized studies. I will then specifically problematize the use of the asset-based approach in educational psychology, by pointing out key challenges encountered at the coalface of knowledge creation in the asset-based approach and Positive Psychology. The article concludes with suggestions for pathways of inquiry, with specific reference to the questions we might be asking. Sensitivity to the discourses we construct in our psychological endeavours, and multi-layered, complex understandings is preferenced.  相似文献
