In order to assess the effects of socialdesirability on (1) reported gender-role ideology and(2) the relative acceptance of rape myths, a shortsocial desirability (SD) scale was integrated into aquestionnaire containing items from both attitude sets.Participants were 160 university students. Less than 5%of the sample was of other than European ethnicity. Agender by SD interaction was predicted, wherein high SD would predict more feminist beliefs for men;the relationship was expected to be less strong forwomen. Although a significant gender by SD interactionwas found, the pattern of results was unexpected. SD did not predict attitudes for men, and womenwho were high in SD actually reported more traditionalgender-role attitudes and were more accepting of rapemyths than women lower in SD. Clark & Thornton take issue with my claim that parity is not a generalisation problem, and that nothing can be inferred about back-propagation in particular, or learning in general, from failures of parity generalisation. They advance arguments to support their contention that generalisation is a relevant issue. In this continuing commentary, I examine generalisation more closely in order to refute these arguments. Different learning algorithms will have different patterns of failure: back-propagation has no special status in this respect. Since we know that there are four prime numbers less than 8 we know that there are numbers. This 'short argument' is correct but it is not an ontological claim or part of philosophy of mathematics. Both realists (Quine) and nominalists (Field) reject the short argument and adopt the idea that the existence of numbers might be posited to explain known mathematical truths. Philosophers operate with a negative conception of what numbers are: they are not in space and time, not related causally to us, not perceivable, etc. This preliminary outlook does not actually characterize a kind of existing thing at all. It creates the atmosphere of weirdness characteristic of both fictionalism and Platonism. Positing things for the sake of explanation makes sense in empirical contexts, but the intelligibility of positing cannot not survive the move to philosophy of mathematics. Modal realism is a model for the unsatisfactory thinking that generates ontological commitment in mathematics. 相似文献

For many students the demands of a university course, often coupled with financial and relationship difficulties, create circumstances where counselling or specialist psychiatric support are needed. Few published studies exist of these services. A follow-up study of new users of the University of Cambridge Counselling Service during the course of the 1993/94 academic year is reported. The study aimed to describe morbidity levels and to identify the determinants of change in students' mental health status. Data were obtained from two initial questionnaires: one completed by each student at the time of their initial consultation; the second by the counsellor completing an assessment consultation. About one year following their first assessment, students were asked to complete a further questionnaire. The clear demonstration in this study of depression and anxiety symptoms, as dominant features for many students at their assessment consultation, suggests that training to improve counsellor recognition of such symptoms and of their knowledge of the effectiveness of available therapeutic approaches would be valuable. Such training should also provide guidance on when to refer students to other professionals. 相似文献

The authors examined whether variations in day-to-day estimates of personality characteristics, which are often treated as error, are instead predictable and meaningful. Using event-sampling and spectral analysis, they found that variations in interpersonal behavior over weekly periods were cyclic and normative. Dominant, submissive, agreeable, and quarrelsome behaviors rose during the week and fell on the weekend. The more general dimensions of agency and communion exhibited opposite patterns of cyclicity, with agency rising and communion falling during the week. Interpersonal traits were not useful in predicting behavior cyclicity. Extraverts exhibited a daily cycle, partially mediated by more varied partners and social behaviors during evenings. This article reports the results of two studies of pay-related attitudes and behaviors of Russian and U.S. managers and students. In a pay allocation role play, managers in both countries place primary emphasis on individual performance (equity) and secondary emphasis on coworker relations and equality. In addition, Russian managerial subjects utilized need in their pay allocations. In a series of experiments, both Russian and U.S. students preferred the equity rule, although there were no productivity effects across different allocation rules. The present study was conducted to determine if children under the age of 18 months can exhibit delayed imitation of three-event sequences when they have no opportunity to practice. Twenty-three 14- to 16-month-old children underwent two different imitation conditions. In the practice condition the children could imitate the sequence immediately after modelling; then they were tested 1 or 7 days later. In the no practice condition the children had the chance to imitate only on the test day. Children were able to imitate the sequences under both conditions irrespective of the delay period. They produced significantly more target actions, and more target actions in the correct order, in the test phase and cued recall phase, compared with the baseline. There were no differences between the two conditions with a 1-day delay period, but after a 7-day delay, the number of target actions produced during the practice condition was significantly higher than those in the no practice condition.
