Previous research conducted with short fables was replicated in this study with Swifties in which sentence length and presence of a pun were controlled. Of the 24 one-sentence word plays shown to each participant, half had an enhanced contextual connection that was predicted to increase appropriateness and detection of the incongruity, resulting in heightened perceived cleverness and humor. Results supported predictions, showing especially strong enhancement of perceived cleverness. The authors suggest that this outcome could be generalized to other forms of word play. 相似文献

We investigated the effects of divided attention during walking. Individuals were classified based on whether they were walking while talking on a cell phone, listening to an MP3 player, walking without any electronics or walking in a pair. In the first study, we found that cell phone users walked more slowly, changed directions more frequently, and were less likely to acknowledge other people than individuals in the other conditions. In the second study, we found that cell phone users were less likely to notice an unusual activity along their walking route (a unicycling clown). Written to honor the immense contribution of Michael White as a leader in the development of narrative therapy, this historical essay contrasts the origins of psychoanalysis, family therapy and narrative therapy. Changes in the understanding of therapeutic strategies, methods of training and supervision, styles of leadership, the involvement of audiences in the therapeutic and training processes, and conceptions of the nature of the mind are described. A style of direct demonstration of methods, especially of the formulation of questions, is important in narrative work. The central master-role of the therapist in analysis and family therapy is replaced in narrative work by eliciting local knowledge, and the recruitment of audiences to the work. This study examined variables included in press reports of excessive infiction of pain on school children over the past ten years. Cross-tabulations were used to examine the relationship between severe corporal punishment with sex of educator, sex of pupil, nature of infraction, severity of punishment, job position of staff member, and age of student. The results indicate that severe corporal punishment is most often administered by males to boys. The frequency steadily increased to 12 or 13 years of age and then decreased. There was no relation between type of misbehavior and severity of punishment. Tentative clinical and educational implications of the study are discussed. 相似文献

Fifteen adult bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus) were exposed to a series of single- and two-bottle preference tests in order to evaluate sensory sensitivity, habituation, and the effect of novelty. Control animals were exposed only to distilled water to provide a baseline whereas experimental birds were presented colored or flavored water in corresponding, counterbalanced test sequences. Although the initial presentation of a novel color or flavor led to a marked reduction in intake, subsequent presentations of color, but not flavor, led to rapid habituation. Implications of the strength of avoidance of gustatory stimuli are discussed.

Among the most frequently used theoretical orientations for administering family therapy are the systems, interactional, structuralist, problem-centered, and attachment approaches. Each of these methods proposes a theory concerning the etiology and resolution of conflict, a protocol of assessment, and a view on the therapist's role in advocating intervention techniques. Despite the success of these methods, however, families often leave treatment lacking the interpersonal skills for predicting potential conflict and for overcoming episodes of transition. This paper explores how the prospective approach may rectify this problem by enhancing the family members' use of intuition for experiencing transition and predicting upcoming change.
