On people’s understanding of the diagnostic implications of probabilistic data

Two lines of prior research into the conditions under which people seek information are examined in light of two statistical definitions of diagnosticity. Five experiments are reported. In two, subjects selected information in order to test a hypothesis. In the remaining three, they selected information in order to convince someone else of the truth of a known hypothesis. A total of 567 university students served as subjects. The two primary conclusions were as follows: (1) When the task is highly structured by the environment, subjects select information diagnostically, and (2) when the task is less structured, so that subjects must seek relevant information not manifest, they select information pseudodiagnostically. Possible relations to other laboratory inference tasks and to clinical judgment are discussed.

Use of the insanity defense: A survey of attorneys in wyoming

Attorneys in the State of Wyoming were surveyed to determine their reported use of the insanity defense during the preceding 5 years. They were asked about the success, defined as “benefit to the defendant,” of the insanity defense at various stages that occur before trial. The attorneys reported that the insanity defense is used throughout the various stages preceding trial, with more use and benefit to the defendant being reported than previously suggested. This was particularly true for the earlier stages in the criminal justice process. The attorneys were also asked various attitude questions related to the insanity defense. Defense lawyers were more in from of the insanity defense and expressed attitudes that supported the insanity defense while prosecuting attorneys were relatively more opposed to the insanity defense and expressed attitudes consistent with this view.     

Psychological distance,stated values and values in use: An approach to considering interactions for counselling within organizations

The work of Argyris (Reasoning, Learning and Action: Individual and Organisational: San Francisco Jossey-Bass, 1982) demonstrated the gaps that we tend tio have between our stated values and those that we actually use in practice. That of Micholt (Transactional Analysis Journal, 22, 228–233, 1992) illustrated the concept of psychological distance as applied tio facilitating groups in an organizational setting. These are both important works which can be very useful in conceptualizing the organizational context of counselling and also the client's problem situation. By combining these two approaches, it is possible to demonstrate a more detailed picture of the psychological distance and some of the potential problems inherent in interactions among three (or more) parties. For counselling, the combined approach emphasizes the importance of the counsellor remaining aware that the client's story is likely to reveal their stated values and that only by gaining a values-in-action perspective (i. e. behaviour) about the client's life can the counsellor adequately assess the client's situation. The examples given in this paper relate to counselling in an organisational context, but the approach may be applied tio facilitation, geneal management or consltancy.     

A computer interview language: Programming the on-line interactive computer

Seven computer interview and two disk file commands are executed by a computer program to display multiple-choice questions on a CRT video screen, to record clients’ answers, and to branch to various sets of questions. The program interpreting these commands uses little computer memory and does not require change each time the interview is altered or expanded. It can be written in almost any general-purpose programming language.     

Alexithymia and individual differences in emotional expression

Two studies examined verbal and nonverbal expression in relation to facets of alexithymia. Participants were videotaped while they talked about negative and positive events that had happened to them. Persons high in difficulty identifying feelings were less emotionally expressive, nonverbally, of positive emotion during a positive talk, and of negative emotion during a negative talk. Other facets of alexithymia were not independently related to expressiveness. Verbal expressiveness was not independently related to any facet of alexithymia. Study 2 showed that these relationships were independent of whether the participant was alone or with another. The implications for the understanding of the nature of the deficit in alexithymia, and of the effects of disclosure are discussed.
