White British Muslims pose a challenge to racialised representations of British Muslims as non‐white, foreign and Other. By drawing on tools from Critical Discourse Analysis to develop Social Representations Theory on a micro‐analytic level, and making connections with other relevant social psychological theories on intergroup relations, this article examines the constructions of white British Muslims as a threat in six national and two Muslim British newspapers. It looks at how discourses are used to create, perpetuate and challenge the ‘hegemonisation’ of social representations in majority and minority press. The findings show that white British Muslims are portrayed as a threat not just despite of, but because of, their position as part of the ‘white British’ ingroup. Consequently, the threat they pose often leads to their Muslimness being emphasised. This was, at times, contested, however, either through direct challenges, or by making the threat ambivalent by drawing on their whiteness.  相似文献

Three experiments are reported which address the problem of defining a role for inner speech. Experiments 1 and 2 establish that inner speech is acquired by normally developing readers between the ages of 8 and 11, and that both slow and fast readers show a similar pattern of acquistition, but do so at a different rate from normal readers. We suggest that the development of inner speech accompanies a strategy of reading aloud “with expression”; and that it is a manifestation of the need to prestructure oral utterances. These will thus contain the lexical items visible on the page within an appropriate prosodic envelope. Both segmental and suprasegmental phonemes contribute to meaning of spoken and, by analogy, written language. Experiment 3 showed that children at this critical point in learning to read comprehended text better when certain prosodic features were made visible on the text. Prosodic restructureing may thus be an important skill acquired by young readers as they progress toward fluent, silent adult reading.  相似文献

Previous work on the approach trajectories of hands to targets in tracking and aiming tasks had produced contradictory evidence about the shape of these curves. This paper shows that these trajectories are a function of the level of practice of the subject; an interpretation in terms of the theory of intermittent control of movements is advanced. Previous contradictory data can be resolved by reference to the subjects/ level of practice. In addition, this theory will encompass the differences between accurate and free movement trajectories reported earlier.  相似文献

The birth order and family structure variables assessed included first or only child, position in multi-child family, position in dyadic family, age of parents at birth of given child, whether reared by one or both parents, whether reared under permissive or authoritarian family atmosphere. The personality variables assessed included Sociability, Anxiety, Dominance, Superego, Phlegmatic Temperament, Involvement, Self-Regard and other scales measured by the Howarth Personality Questionnaire. One hundred seventy female and 142 male undergraduates were tested. Significant relationships found included: anxiety lower in firstborns; superego higher in firstborns; persistence higher in those not dominated by elder sibling; phlegmatic temperament higher in permissive families; involvement and phlegmatic temperament lower in single parent families; self-pride higher in the elder of a sibling pair; individual tolerance higher in children reared by both rather than single parent.  相似文献

Responses (i.e. “seen” or “not seen”) to a repeated stimulus of constant intensity are shown to be grouped in runs of the same response. It is suggested that there are only two possible explanations of this non-randomness: spontaneous fluctuations of threshold and the direct influence of a response on succeeding responses. Experiments designed to distinguish between these two explanations have shown that the latter is the more important and that a response affects directly, though with diminishing intensity, the three immediately following responses.  相似文献

Senders (1949) reported that with intermittent illumination short flashes needed less energy than larger ones to make a visual acuity target visible. This apparent breakdown of the reciprocal relationship between time and intensity, which has been found almost universally by earlier workers under a very wide range of experimental conditions, raised a number of interesting theoretical issues such as the relationship between visual acuity and intensity discrimination thresholds, and the plausible importance of eye movements in each. Unfortunately we have been unable to repeat Senders' result in spite of the most determined efforts to reproduce her experimental conditions. We are unable to suggest why our results differ from hers, but feel that our experiments at least show that her data are very difficult to reproduce and hence no general theoretical argument can be based on them.

In view of this we felt at liberty to predict results on the basis of a model, we had tentatively constructed, which we regarded as integrating Bloch's and Talbot's laws. This enabled us to make predictions about the effect of frequency of repetitive stimulation on thresholds. Experiments were carried out to ascertain how far these predictions were substantiated. This article explores identity work and acculturation work in the lives of British mixed‐heritage children and adults. Children, teenagers, and parents with mixed heritage participated in a community arts project that invited them to deliberate, construct, and reconstruct their cultural identities and cultural relations. We found that acculturation, cultural and raced identities, are constructed through a series of oppositional themes: cultural maintenance versus cultural contact; identity as inclusion versus identity as exclusion; institutionalized ideologies versus agency. The findings point towards an understanding of acculturation as a dynamic, situated, and multifaceted process: acculturation in movement. To investigate this, we argue that acculturation research needs to develop a more dynamic and situated approach to the study of identity, representation, and culture. The article concludes with a discussion on the need for political psychologists to develop methods attuned to the tensions and politics of acculturation that are capable of highlighting the possibilities for resistance and social change.  相似文献
