Mathematics beliefs and achievement of adolescent students in Japan: results from the TIMSS 1999 assessment

A recent study (1) of undergraduate students in a precalculus course indicated that they expressed slightly positive attitudes toward mathematics. It is important, however, to examine relationships between students' initial attitudes and achievement outcomes. The present purpose was to assess the relationship between self-beliefs and mathematics achievement for a large national sample of students from the TIMSS 1999 international sample (eighth graders) from Japan. Several significant relationships between mathematics beliefs and test scores were noted. In addition, the overall multiple regression equation that assessed the joint significance of the complete set of self-belief variables was significant (F7.65 = 159.48, p < .001) and explained 20.6% of the variance in mathematics achievement test scores.     

Self-pluralism: assessment and relations to adjustment, life changes, and age

Individuals differ in the degree to which they see themselves as behaving and feeling similarly or differently in different situations and at different times. This dimension of the self-concept, which is conceived to extend from strong constancy of the self-concept at one extreme to marked variability at the opposite pole, is designated as self-pluralism. An inventory for the assessment of degree of self-pluralism--the Self-Pluralism Scale (SPS)--is presented, and the correlations of this scale with other relevant personality measures are reported. Several studies utilizing the SPS are presented. The results indicate that self-pluralism is negatively related to psychological adjustment, positively related to long-term real-life variability, and negatively related to age.     

Sex role orientation and marital satisfaction in dual- and one-provider couples

Scores on the Baucom scales of Masculinity (MSC) and Femininity (FMN), and on three scales from the Snyder Marital Satisfaction Inventory, were obtained from samples of dual- and one-provider couples. Data on rewards and difficulties of the dual- and one-provider lifestyles were collected by means of open-ended questions. The two groups of couples did not differ in sex role orientation or marital satisfaction. The men's levels of MSC were positively related to their marital satisfaction in both groups, and the women's levels of FMN were especially important to couples' satisfaction in the dual-provider group. In both groups, cross-sex scores (women's MSC and men's FMN) were positively related to couples' satisfaction with marital companionship.Bernadette Gray-Little, Ph.D., W. Luria-nebraska neuropsychological battery: High rates of false positives for geriatirc subjects

This study examined false positive rates obtained for two normal adult age groups, using three different methods for interpreting performances on the Luria-Nebraska Neuropsychological Battery (LNNB). Among normal subjects ages 18 to 30 and ages 65 to 85, false positive rates were found to range from 3.9% to 7.7% for younger subjects and 13.5% to 32.7% for older subjects. Significant differences were found between the proportion of false positives in each age group on each method of interpretation. A lack of agreement was found between the three different methods of interpretation concerningwhich subjects should be classified as impaired. Further analysis was performed by dividing older subjects into two groups, ages 65 to 70 and over 70. False positive rates for subjects over age 70 were found to range from 20.7% to 41.4%. Significant differences were also found between the proportion of false positives in each of these two groups.     

Coping with spousal loss: potential buffering effects of self-reported helping behavior

The present study examined the role of self-reported helping behavior in attenuating the helper's depression following spousal loss. Using archival data from the Changing Lives of Older Couples sample (N = 289), the study shows that among bereaved participants who had experienced high loss-related grief, helping behavior (providing instrumental support to others) was associated with an accelerated decline in depressive symptoms for the helper from 6 months to 18 months following spousal loss. This relationship between giving help and recovery from depression was independent of support received, as well as measured health, and interpersonal and demographic factors. Implications of these results for theoretical approaches to the study of close relationships and well-being are discussed.     

Project GLOBE: An Introduction

Le projet GLOBE est décrit dans cet article, avec ses bases conceptuelle et méthodologique. Une introduction est indispensable puisque les travaux présentés dans ce numéro relèvent de ce projet qui est une étude exceptionnelle de 61 pays sous divers aspects et à partir de plusieurs méthodes; il porte sur la vaste question de la culture, du leadership et des pratiques organisationnelles. Plus de 150 spécialistes du management et des sciences sociales des 61 pays y ont contribué. L'objectif global du projet est le développement d'une théorie empirique destinée à décrire, comprendre et prédire l'impact de variables culturelles spécifiques sur le leadership, les processus organisationnels et leur efficience. L'article survole différents aspects de ce projet et peut être utilisé pour se repérer dans les autres contributions.
