A method is described for identifying and scoring average evoked response (AER) components. The method uses background EEG activity as a guide for visual identification of AER components. The present research was conducted to explore genetic influences on empathic concern for others. First, an index of empathic concern was created by combining relevant items from Gough's Adjective Check List (ACL). This index was validated by correlating scores of 88 undergraduates on the index with their scores on a self-report measure of empathy, which has been related to prosocial behavior. Correlations were sufficiently high to accept the validity of the index. Next, previously collected ACL responses of 114 monozygotic (MZ) and 116 dizygotic (DZ) twins were reanalyzed in order to create an empathic concern score for each twin. The twins were middle-aged males initially raised together but living apart at the time they completed the ACL. Comparison of intraclass correlations for MZ and DZ twins revealed, as predicted by the genetic hypothesis, significant (p < .005) heritability in empathic concern scores. This finding suggests that there may, indeed, be a genetic influence on individual differences in empathic concern for others. Some limitations of the present data are also considered. On the assumption that an understanding of the past provides a guide to the future, analyses are directed at explicating major trends of the last 25 years in the scientific study of intellectual abilities. Five major trends are identified. These suggest that in the future several kinds of tests will be used to measure several kinds of basic processes of intelligence; there will be a corresponding decrease in concern to measure a single attribute of general intelligence. There will be emphasis in measuring complex learned capacities of a kind that characterizes adult thinking, in contrast to tests desinged for school children. Test items will be presented through the computer, on TV screens, and in ways that permit the individuals' responses to determine which items will follow; responses, including time to respond, will be gathered in the computer and there converted to scores. 相似文献
