Abstract

The primary foci of the study were exploration of the linkage between cognitive and autonomic inflexibility of worry and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and examination of the effects of an analog cognitive restructuring task on this relationship. Cardiac responses of GAD and non-GAD participants were measured to examine the sympathetic and parasympathetic effects of worry and cognitive challenge. Diagnostic groups of undergraduate students were determined via administration of a structured interview, yielding a GAD group (n=16) and a control group (n=19) of individuals without GAD, depression, or panic disorder diagnoses. Cardiac autonomic responses were acquired via electrocardiogram during rest, worry, and cognitive challenge conditions by an experimenter blind to diagnosis. Metrics were compared between the two groups and across the three conditions. Individuals diagnosed with GAD did not differ significantly from controls on autonomic indices. Worry was associated with significantly decreased parasympathetic influence and increased sympathetic activity. Cognitive challenge did not result in significant increased cardiac responsivity. The results indicate that worry behavior is associated with decreased vagal activity, suggest a linkage between autonomic and cognitive inflexibility, and provide further suggestions for improving protocols to assess the autonomic effects of cognitive therapy techniques.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Zoo education department staff members engaged in a professional development program on action research that resulted in increased self-efficacy in their ability to formally or informally assess their own instructional and other job-related practices. Resolution of contradictions between professional development goals and participant perceptions, between discordant research ideologies of the participants and of action research paradigms, and between the professional development objectives and the existing tools held by participants were important in facilitating participants' ability to engage in action research. The role of mentors was of particular significance in the resolution of contradictions. This program of reflective practice simultaneously provided development for zoo professionals and yielded visitor studies data that the staff members could directly apply to their practices, thus bridging the gap between research and practice.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between a transient state anxiety measure (cognitive anxiety) and the decision to consult for hearing services in older adults. Cognitive anxiety was measured using a content analytic scheme grounded in personal construct psychology. A total of 93 adults with hearing impairment between the ages of 65 and 80 years participated in this study and comprised three groups that occupied different points in the consultation process: a nonconsulting group living in the community, a consulting group seeking evaluation and treatment for hearing impairment, and a group who had received communication consultation and hearing aids. No between-group differences were observed on demographic or objective audiologic measures of hearing impairment. However, as predicted, those who were actively seeking consultation for hearing impairment displayed the highest level of cognitive anxiety, and those who had received consultation and assistance the least, suggesting that difficulties anticipating and interpreting communication situations may play an instigating role in the decision to seek services for hearing impairment.  相似文献

The present paper provides some hypotheses concerning the role of sensorimotor mechanisms in the coordination and programming of multimovement behaviors. The primary database is from experiments on the control of speech, a motor behavior that inherently requires multimovement coordination. From these data, it appears that coordination may be implemented by calibrated, sensorimotor actions which couple multiple movements for the accomplishment of common functional goals. The data from speech and select observations in other motor systems also reveal that these sensorimotor linkages are task-dependent and may underlie the intermovement motor equivalence that characterizes many natural motor behaviors. In this context, it is hypothesized also that motor learning may involve the calibration of these intermovement sensorimotor actions. These observations in turn provide some alternative perspectives on the concept of a motor program, primarily suggesting that individual movements and muscle contractions are not wholly prespecified, but shaped by sensorimotor adjustments.  相似文献

Intimate partner violence among gays and lesbians has gained increased attention in recent years. The present study assessed mutual partner violence within a gay, lesbian, bisexual (GLB) community sample to explore how mutual partner violence relates to the use of psychoactive substances. The results suggest that individuals engaging in mutual partner violence are more likely to report the use of numerous drugs than other subjects. However, this finding holds more consistently among men. The results also indicate that the exchange of violence is more significant for substance use than the particular type of violence involved. The authors suggest that minority stress may be an underlying mechanism of both substance use and partner violence and may contribute to the intersection of these deviant phenomena in the GLB community.  相似文献

The present study investigates the relationship between therapists' perceived knowledge level in the area of child development and their actual knowledge level, as measured by an assessment instrument developed to measure child development knowledge within a therapeutic setting. Results revealed that respondents felt that they were knowledgable in the area of child development, as well as comfortable working with children in a therapeutic context. However, as a group, the respondents only averaged 68% on the child development assessment scale. Implications of the study's findings, as well as recommendations for clinical training programs and future research, are discussed.  相似文献

This study examines the feasibility and effectiveness of an environmental intervention for improving diet by comparing the impact of health messages, lowered prices, and their combination on the purchase of healthy food items in a restaurant. Price decreases alone, rather than a combination of price decreases and health messages, were associated with a higher level of increased purchases of some healthy food items as compared with control items over a 4-month period. Price decreases may be a more powerful means than health messages of increasing consumption of healthy foods. Health messages may have paradoxical effects if foods labeled as healthy are assumed to taste bad.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine whether reinforcer-specific conditioned responding would occur in a situation in which responding was not thought to be mediated by a representation that encodes information about the specific properties of the reinforcer. The force of the pigeon's keypeck was monitored during first and second-order conditioning with either food or water as the unconditioned stimulus (US). Each pigeon was trained with four different stimuli: a first-order cue predicting that responding would be reinforced with grain (S1f), a first-order cue predicting water as the reinforcer (S1w), a second-order stimulus predicting the S1f (S2f), and a second-order cue predicting the S1w (S2w). Following conditioning, the pigeons were selectively satiated with one of the two reinforcers and presented with the first and second-order cues in an extinction test. At the end of training, the pigeon's keypecks were less forceful to the S1w than to the S1f. There was not, however, a reliable difference between the force of the pecks to the S2f and the S2w. These force differences are consistent with the conclusion that the topography of the keypecks was systematically related to the nature of the primary reinforcer during first but not during second-order conditioning. The results from the selective satiation test are difficult to interpret. There was no evidence to indicate that second-order responding was mediated by a detailed representation of the primary US, but a detailed representation of the reinforcer may have been mediating first-order responding. Taken together, these findings are consistent with the view that a representation of the reinforcer is an important determinant of the topography of conditioned responding.  相似文献
