Social genomics: genomic inventions in society. The nature of what's to come

This paper identifies several kinds of intellectual mistakes that proponents of genetic engineering make, in defending their views and characterizing the views of their opponents. Results from research in the social sciences and humanities illuminate the nature of these mistakes. The mistakes themselves play a role in allowing proponents to gather support from other protagonists in the social controversies involving science and technology. Understanding the controversies requires understanding that innovations are components of complex and ill-structured social problems; the "right answer" does not follow from scientific or technological breakthroughs. If the problems are identified correctly, issues of non-economic or non-market values and political and individual rights will need to be addressed.     

The impact of comorbidity on the management of pathological gambling

A 30-year-old woman with severe pathological gambling and cyclothymia presented to our program with no previous history of pharmacologic or psychotherapeutic treatment. Pathological gambling is an impulse -control disorder not otherwise specified (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition) in which comorbidity is common, particularly with substance abuse, obsessive-compulsive disorder and mood disorders. As described in this case, pathological gamblers with bipolar comorbidity may be effectively treated with mood stabilizers such as lithium. After receiving 10 weeks of lithium treatment, the patient showed improvement in both gambling behavior and affective instability. The identification of specific subtypes among patients with pathological gambling may be relevant to the choice of pharmacologic treatment.     

Comprehensive treatment of three patients with comorbid OCPD and ADHD

Three patients were seen in an outpatient setting with work difficulties involving disorganization and task completion. They were evaluated and found to have significant symptoms of both attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, inattentive subtype and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder and were then treated with a creative combined behavioral and medication treatment, which emphasized the use of external aides (eg, paraprofessionals). Significant symptom reduction was observed as a result of this combined intervention.     

Mapping Aggression and Hegemony in the Neoliberal Era

I appreciate the opportunity to engage in this virtual dialogue with Dorothy Evans Holmes and Eyal Rozmarin, both of whom in this issue offer thoughtful discussions of my paper that in some instances questioned and in others expanded my analysis of neoliberal hegemony and subjectivity. My response to their commentaries touches on the following themes: the connection between instincts and hegemonic ideology and discourses; the nature of neoliberal culture in light of the history of group violence, sacrifice, and scapegoating; and the role of nostalgia in critical interpretations of neoliberal society and its vicissitudes. I also offer an addendum to my paper, written before the 2016 election, to comment on how neoliberalism produced the current political crisis, in which social malaise has been punctured by authoritarian politics, populist activism, and ideological polarization.
