An analysis of social desirability in personality assessment is presented. Starting with the symptoms, Study 1 showed that mean ratings of graded personality items are moderately to strongly linearly related to social desirability (Self Deception, Impression formation, and the first Principal Component), suggesting that item popularity may be a useful heuristic tool for identifying items which elicit socially desirable responding. We diagnose the cause of socially desirable responding as an interaction between the evaluative content of the item and enhancement motivation in the rater. Study 2 introduced a possible cure; evaluative neutralization of items. To test the feasibility of the method lay psychometricians (undergraduates) reformulated existing personality test items according to written instructions. The new items were indeed lower in social desirability while essentially retaining the five factor structure and reliability of the inventory. We conclude that although neutralization is no miracle cure, it is simple and has beneficial effects. 相似文献

Computer-assisted assessment of psychologic performance in patients exposed to neurotoxic substances
A clinico-experimental investigation was conducted to study subjects exposed to neurotoxic pollutants and contaminants by means of the Combitest 2 computer-aided psychometric method. To this end, sensopsychomotor, mnestic and intellectual performance as well as concentration power were evaluated. Single and multiple choice reaction tasks, termometer tracking and maximal tapping were found to be efficient screening methods. Pronounced relationships were seen to exist between psychometric test results and lead concentration levels in blood. 相似文献

Naturally occurring and experimentally induced tip-of-the-tongue experiences in three adult age groups. 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Tip-of-the-tongue (TOT) experiences were examined in 30 young (ages 18-24 years), 30 young-old (ages 60-74), and 30 old-old (ages 80-92) adults. In Study 1, TOT experiences were experimentally induced with definitions of to-be-retrieved targets. If the target was not retrieved, orthographic or semantic cues were provided. Age-related increases in the occurrence of TOT experiences and in the time needed to resolve TOT experiences were found for young versus young-old and young-old versus old-old groups; all comparisons were significant except for young versus young-old TOT occurrence, which approached significance. In Study 2, the same participants recorded naturally occurring TOT experiences in structured diaries during a 4-week interval. Both the number of TOT experiences and the resolution time for TOT experiences increased with age. However, the percentage of TOT experiences resolved was equal across age groups; given enough time, even the oldest participants resolved virtually all TOT experiences. 相似文献

Much research contrasts self-reported personality traits across cultures. We submit that this enterprise is weakened by significant methodological problems (in particular, the reference-group effect) that undermine the validity of national averages of personality scores. In this study, behavioral and demographic predictors of conscientiousness were correlated with different cross-national measures of conscientiousness based on self-reports, peer reports, and perceptions of national character. The predictors correlated strongly with perceptions of national character, but not with self-reports and peer reports. Country-level self- and peer-report measures of conscientiousness failed as markers of between-nation differences in personality. 相似文献

What types of studies test the question of pancultural self‐enhancement? Sedikides, Gaertner, and Vevea (2007) have identified inclusion criteria that largely limit the question to studies of the better‐than‐average effect (i.e. 27 out of 29 effects that they include as ‘validated’ and ‘relevant’). In contrast, other effects which they labelled as ‘unvalidated’ or ‘irrelevant’ used methods other than the better‐than‐average effect (i.e. 24 out of 24 effects). Because Sedikides et al. are drawing conclusions about pancultural self‐enhancement and not the pancultural better‐than‐average effect, these excluded studies are relevant to the hypothesis under question. Ignoring the findings from other methods is highly problematic, in particular because these other methods yield results that conflict with those from the better‐than‐average effect. An analysis of effects from all studies reveals no support for pancultural self‐enhancement. 相似文献

Sætrevik, B. (2010). The influence of visual information on auditory lateralization. Scandinavian Journal of Psychology. The classic McGurk study showed that presentation of one syllable in the visual modality simultaneous with a different syllable in the auditory modality creates the perception of a third, not presented syllable. The current study presented dichotic syllable pairs (one in each ear) simultaneously with video clips of a mouth pronouncing the syllables from one of the ears, or pronouncing a syllable that was not part of the dichotic pair. When asked to report the auditory stimuli, responses were shifted towards selecting the auditory stimulus from the side that matched the visual stimulus. 相似文献
