Three experiments show latent (or incidental) learning of salt-cue relationships using a conditioned cue-preference paradigm. Rats drank a salt solution while confined in one compartment and water in an adjacent, distinct compartment on alternate days. When given access to the two compartments with no solutions present, sodium-deprived rats preferred their salt-paired compartments; normal rats preferred their water-paired compartments. Reversing the deprivation states of the two groups reversed their preferences. These results show that rats can latently acquire associations between environmental cues and the taste of salt, and can use this information flexibly to guide behavior based upon internal cues produced by sodium deprivation.  相似文献

It has been claimed that the power PC theory reconciles regularity and power theories of causal judgment by showing how contingency information is used for inferences about unobservable causal powers. Under the causal powers theory causal relations are understood as generative relations in which a causal power of one thing acts on a liability of another thing under some releasing condition. These 3 causal roles are implicit or explicit in all causal interpretations. The power PC theory therefore fails to reconcile power theories and regularity theories because it has a fundamentally different definition of power and does not accommodate the tripartite causal role distinction. Stimuli were presented that consisted of a stationary row of black-bordered white rectangles. As observers watched, each rectangle in turn from left to right changed from white to black. The final rectangle did not change colour but moved off from left to right. The sequential colour change suggested motion from left to right, and observers reliably reported a visual impression that this illusory motion kicked or bumped the last rectangle, thereby making it move. The impression was stronger when the sequential colour change was faster, but was not significantly affected by the number of the rectangles in the row (ranging from 2 to 8). These results support the conclusion that neither contact nor motion of a causal object is necessary for a visual impression of causality to occur.  相似文献

We investigate 1 factor that influences the success of ideas or cultural representations by proposing that they have a habitat, that is, a set of environmental cues that encourages people to recall and transmit them. We test 2 hypotheses: (a) fluctuation: the success of an idea will vary over time with fluctuations in its habitat, and (b) competition: ideas with more prevalent habitats will be more successful. Four studies use subject ratings and data from newspapers to provide correlational support for our 2 hypotheses, with a negative factoid, positive rumor, catchphrases, and variants of a proverb. Three additional experimental studies manipulate the topic of actual conversations and find empirical support for our theory, with catchphrases, proverbs, and slang. The discussion examines how habitat prevalence applies to a more extensive class of ideas and suggests how habitats may influence the process by which ideas evolve.  相似文献

The authors investigated whether the early or later stages of closed-loop (CL) and open-loop (OL) grasping movements were differentially influenced by the Müller-Lyer (ML) illusion. Participants (N = 21) reached out and grasped small (5 cm) and large (7 cm) objects embedded within fins-in and fins-out ML configurations. Grasping time (GT) was normalized, and absolute grip aperture (GA) as well as scaled illusion effects were computed at 20%, 40%, 60%, and 80% of GT. The results indicated that CL trials were refractory to the illusory array (i.e., from 20% to 80% of GT), whereas OL trials were influenced by the ML figure during that same time. Those findings suggest that CL trials were supported by unitary and metrical visual information, whereas OL trials were entirely supported by perception-based visual information.  相似文献

In the present prospective study of 81 older volunteers from a nonprofit organization in Australia, the authors compared the predictive utility of I. Ajzen's (1988) theory of planned behavior with that of E. G. Clary and M. Snyder's (1991) functional approach to volunteering. The authors mailed questionnaires to 385 volunteers in two waves of data collection. The first wave measured theory-of-planned-behavior variables and functional-approach variables. The second wave measured self-reported volunteering behavior for the previous month. Regression analyses supported both the theory of planned behavior and the functional approach; the theory of planned behavior accounted for a significantly larger proportion of variance in above-average participation in self-reported volunteerism. The findings of the present study provided some support for both the theory of planned behavior and the functional approach as models of self-reported volunteerism.  相似文献

Evidence suggests that perceptual networks in the ventral visual pathway are necessary for action control when targets are viewed with only one eye, or when the target must be stored in memory. We tested whether memory-linked (i.e., open-loop versus memory-guided actions) and monocular-linked effects (i.e., binocular versus monocular actions) on action arise from a common mechanism as suggested by evidence from neuropsychology and psychophysics. Participants viewed targets with either one eye or two (vision: monocular versus binocular) and then reached to touch targets in open-loop and memory-guided conditions (condition: open-loop versus 0, 500, 1000, and 1500 ms delays). Results showed that memory-linked and monocular-linked increases in radial and variable movement error were additive (i.e., main effects of vision and condition, but no interaction). This suggests that the two effects on visuomotor control arise from separate mechanisms, in contrast to evidence from psychophysics and neuropsychology suggesting a common underlying mechanism.  相似文献

The goal of the present investigation was to explore the possible expression of hemispheric-specific processing during the planning and execution of a bimanual reaching task. Participants (N = 9) completed 80 bimanual reaching movements (requiring simultaneous, bilateral production of arm movements) to peripherally presented targets while selectively attending to either their left or right hand. Further, targets were presented in spatially compatible (ipsilateral to the aiming limb) and incompatible (contralateral to the aiming limb) response contexts. It was found that the left hand exhibited temporal superiority over the right hand in the response planning phase of bimanual reaching, indicating a left hand/right hemisphere advantage in the preparation of a bimanual response. During response execution, and consistent with the view that interhemispheric processing time (Barthelemy & Boulinguez, 2002) or biomechanical constraints (Carey, Hargreaves, & Goodale, 1996) generate temporal delays, longer movement times were observed in response to spatially incompatible target positions. However, no hemisphere-specific benefit was demonstrated for response execution. Based on these findings, we propose lateralized processing is present at the time of response planning (i.e., left hand/right hemisphere processing advantage); however, lateralized specialization appears to be annulled during dynamic execution of a bimanual reaching task.  相似文献

Four groups of pigeons were trained to perform a delayed matching-to-sample task with a single delay of 0, 2, 4, or 6 s from the outset of training. The longer the training delay, the more sessions were required for all birds to reach the same level of response accuracy. Following initial training, five test sessions that included nonreinforced trials with delay intervals of 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 s were interspersed between training sessions. Unlike typical forgetting functions in which accuracy decreases monotonically with increasing delay, the forgetting functions from test sessions resembled generalization gradients with the peak of the functions occurring at the training delay. Following additional training for all birds with a 0-s delay, forgetting functions decreased monotonically with increasing delay. The results suggested that remembering can be trained at a specific delay interval, and generalizes to similar delay intervals. Generalization along the temporal dimension of delay may contribute to typical forgetting functions in which accuracy decreases from 0-s delay.  相似文献

In four experiments, participants made speeded same-different responses to pairs of face photographs showing the same woman or different women with the same expression or different expressions. Compared with responses to positive pairs, negative pairs were matched more slowly on identity than on expression. A secondary finding showed that face expressions (same, different) influenced identity responses, and identities influenced expression responses, equally for positive and negative pairs. The independence of this irrelevant-dimension effect from the contrast effect supports the conclusion required by the main finding that negation slows perceptual encoding of surface-based information used for identification more than it does encoding of edge-based information used for expression recognition.  相似文献
