Many gamblers claim that gambling is intrinsically exciting, with money playing only a secondary role. To examine the effects of the expectancy of winning money, the authors randomly assigned 243 male college student gamblers to 1 of 6 experimental or 1 of 3 control conditions. Control participants either simply watched a videotaped horse race or they picked a horse, but without wagering; that horse later turned out to be either the winner of the race or the runner-up. Experimental participants wagered $1 on a horse for a chance of winning either USD 2, USD 7, or USD 15, with half winning and half losing their wagers. Wagering led to increased heart rates and subjective excitement as a function of the expected payoff and of winning as opposed to losing the wager. The study was replicated with 200 female college student gamblers with similar results. These findings support the notion that the excitement of gambling is tied to the expectancy of winning money. 相似文献

Human infants, just a few days of age, are known to prefer attractive human faces. We examined whether this preference is human-specific. Three- to 4-month-olds preferred attractive over unattractive domestic and wild cat (tiger) faces (Experiments 1 and 3). The preference was not observed when the faces were inverted, suggesting that it did not arise from low-level image differences (Experiments 2 and 3). In addition, the spontaneous preference for attractive tiger faces influenced performance in a recognition memory task involving attractive versus unattractive tiger face pairings (Experiment 4). The findings suggest that infant preference for attractive faces reflects the activity of general processing mechanisms rather than a specific adaptation to mate choice. 相似文献

There is considerable research on notetaking in academic settings but relatively little of it in non‐academic ones. This paper reviews the effects of notetaking in legal situations, counselling and interviewing, and assesses the usefulness of notetaking as a memory aid for older people and as a prospective memory device for brain‐injured persons. The results suggest that: notetaking has no significant effect on recall in ‘real‐life’ jury situations; there is some evidence that notetaking by counsellors in counselling sessions might be harmful for clients; there is some evidence that notetaking in interviews can reduce bias in decision making; there is some evidence that notetaking is helpful for older persons; and that too little research has been conducted on the use of notetaking as a device for aiding the prospective memory for brain‐injured persons to reach any firm conclusions. Younger and older adults were compared in three experiments, using procedures that had been shown to affect the spread of visual attention. The attentional effects found in previous experiments were replicated. A broader focus of attention speeded responses to peripheral targets. In addition, two established findings concerning aging were replicated: Responses were slower in older than in younger adults, and, in certain conditions, they slowed more rapidly as target eccentricity increased. No interactions of age effects with attentional manipulations were found. In an attempt to examine the unconscious roots of values, this paper explores Gotthard Booth's psychosomatic theory that disease is a message of the whole person. It outlines his work in describing distinctive personality types who characteristically become ill through the disease of the organ system that is dominant for their life-style. The disease represents accommodation in the person's object relatedness and as such reflects the operation of unconscious values and indicates possibilities for therapy. Because the cultural environment helps condition the dominant organ response, Booth's work also has relevance for developing a sociology of value and suggests a prophylactic role for religion. 相似文献

Three experiments were conducted to determine whether human observers could identify the gender of 40 domestic cats (20 female, 20 male) depicted in individual color photographs. In experiment 1a, observers performed at chance for photographs depicting whole cats, cat heads (bodies occluded), and cat bodies (heads occluded). Experiment 1b showed that chance performance was also obtained when the photographs were full-face close-ups of the cats. Experiment 2a revealed that even with gender-identification training on 30 (15 female, 15 male) of the 40 face close-ups, observers were unable to generalize their training to reliably identify the gender of the 10 remaining test faces (5 female, 5 male). However, experiment 2b showed that gender-identification training with the 14 most accurately identified faces from experiment 1b (7 female, 7 male) was successful in raising gender identification of the 10 test faces above chance. Experiments 3a and 3b extended this facilitative effect of gender-identification training to a population of animal-care workers. The findings indicate that, with appropriate training, human observers can identify the gender of cat faces at an above-chance level. A perceptual category learning account emphasizing the on-line formation of differentiated male versus female prototypes during training is offered as an explanation of the findings. 相似文献

Three experiments are reported in which the newborn baby's ability to fixate binocularly was investigated, using the corneal reflection technique for measuring eye fixation position. Two criteria for consistent binocular fixation were assessed. These are (1) the two eyes will be optically more divergent when fixating more distant targets, and (2) each eye will be scored as being on-target when corrections for the expected deviations of the pupil center from the fixated stimulus are introduced.In the first experiment vertical arrays of lights were separately shown at distances of 10 and 20 in. from the subjects' eyes (with the retinal image size and luminance of the stimuli held constant). The 12 newborns who gave results at both viewing distances reliably converged to both stimuli, the optical divergence of the pupil centers of the eyes increasing with presentation of the more distant stimulus. In Expt 2 similar stimuli at 5 and 10 in. from the eyes were shown. It was again the case that the subjects reliably converged to the stimulus at 10 in. This was no so for the stimulus at 5 in., and many subjects fixated this stimulus with monocular vision. The failure to converge is probably due to an inability to accommodate to this near distance. In Expt 3 different stimuli (a vertical strip of light, an outline triangle and square, and an array of squares) were presented a constant distance (10 ± 1 in.) from the eyes. The majority of the 15 subjects binocularly fixated all three stimuli: for those subjects who failed to converge consistently to these stimuli the observed alternatives to binocular fixation were monocular fixation, divergent strabismus, and a third category of response that is most probably an indication of inattention to the stimulus. It can be concluded that the newborn baby possesses the ability to fixate binocularly an appropriately presented stimulus, and has the basic requirements for binocular vision. 相似文献

Forty male inmates from an adult correctional training centre participated in a 2 × 2 factorial design with subject correctness-incorrectness and group agreement-disagreement constituting the classification factors. A modified Asch procedure was used to manipulate a S's prior experience of correctness and agreement (Part 1) and to assess subsequent conformity to 3 male confederates (Part 2). The female experimenter served as the source of reinforcement and group correctness. Ss responded to a (two part) 26 verbal and perceptual item scale, including 11 conformity items. Subject correctness and group agreement interacted, for perceptual items only, so that subjects who were more competent than the group or equally incompetent to the group conformed less than those who were less competent than the group, who in turn conformed less than those who were equally competent to the group, where both the subjects and the group were correct. Subjects conformed more to difficult verbal items than to perceptual items, and unsuspicious subjects conformed more than suspicious subjects. Both relative competence, mediating the effects of prior experience, and the situational factor of reinforcement affect conformity to perceptual tasks. 相似文献
