Three studies explored both the advantages of and subjects' preferences for a disaggregated judgment procedure and a holistic one. The task in our first two studies consisted of evaluating colleges; the third study asked participants to evaluate job applicants. Holistic ratings consisted of providing an overall evaluation while considering all of the characteristics of the evaluation objects; disaggregated ratings consisted of evaluating each cue independently. Participants also made paired comparisons of the evaluation objects. We constructed preference orders for the disaggregated method by aggregating these ratings (unweighted or weighted characteristics). To compare the holistic, disaggregated, and weighted‐disaggregated method we regressed the four cues on the participant's holistic rating, on the linearly aggregated disaggregated ratings, and on the average weighted disaggregated rating, using the participant's “importance points” for each cue as weights. Both types of combined disaggregated ratings related more closely to the cues in terms of proportion of variance accounted for in Experiments 1 and 2. In addition, the disaggregated ratings were more closely related to the paired‐comparison orderings, but Experiment 2 showed that this was true for a small set (10) but not a large set (60) of evaluation objects. Experiment 3 tested the “gamesmanship” hypothesis: People prefer holistic ratings because it is easier to incorporate illegitimate but appealing criteria into one's judgment. The results suggested that the disaggregated procedure generally produced sharper distinctions between the most relevant and least relevant cues. Dispositional forgiveness of self, others, and situations   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7  
Six studies regarding forgiveness are presented. The Heartland Forgiveness Scale (HFS), a self-report measure of dispositional forgiveness (with subscales to assess forgiveness of self, others, and situations) was developed and demonstrated good psychometric properties. Forgiveness correlated positively with cognitive flexibility, positive affect, and distraction; it correlated negatively with rumination, vengeance, and hostility. Forgiveness predicted four components of psychological well-being (anger, anxiety, depression, and satisfaction with life); forgiveness of situations accounted for unique variance in these components of psychological well-being. Forgiveness and hostility demonstrated equivalent, inverse associations with relationship duration, and forgiveness accounted for unique variance in relationship satisfaction, even when controlling for trust. Forgiveness level correlated positively with decreased negativity in statements written about transgressions in the present versus the past tense.  相似文献

Capps's book uses historical, sociological, and psychological methods to probe the personal identity and self-understanding of Jesus. This reviewer suggests that historical, sociological, and psychological methods are modes of discourse that are modern forms of myth. Myth is understood as any narrative form that is used, and/or taken for granted, as a way of self-understanding and understanding the world. These disciplines are useful critical tools with which to explore the text and its world, but they do not guarantee knowledge about the past. As modern modes of discourse they create narratives (i.e., myths) about the past, that for us are preferred epistemological pathways. Jesus Christ is the ultimate model of the God-person relationship in the Christian west. Therefore, any serious attempt to render a realistic portrait of Jesus using contemporary modes of describing reality has the possibility of effecting a profound transformation of the images of God and Jesus. This then can transform our own relationship with God. The value of Capps's book is not in any knowledge it might give us about Jesus, but in the transformation it can effect within the reader, and the author, of central religious images. Psychoanalytic and developmental theories are limited in their explanatory effectiveness because they are materialistic and personalistic (reductive). The analytical psychology of Carl Jung and the archetypal psychology of James Hillman are proposed in order to add a transpersonal dimension to Capps's approach to the personality of Jesus.  相似文献

Weak vibrotactile signals were presented to human Os, in some instances to the index finger alone, in other instances to the middle finger alone, and in still other instances to the two fingers simultaneously. When the 0 knew in advance of a trial which finger(s) would be presented a signal, no spatial summation resulted, that is, the sensitivity of two fingers to two signals was no greater than the sensitivity of one finger to one signal. When the 0 was left uncertain about which finger(s) would be presented a signal on any given trial, a result having the appearance of spatial summation was obtained. Theappearance is misleading;the difference between two-finger and one-finger sensitivity in this case reflects, instead, a decrement in the performance of the single fingers. Perceptions of current and appropriate practices, and behavioral intentions regarding the treatment of pregnant employees were examined utilizing the Pregnancy in the Workplace questionnaire. Subjects believed employing organizations should provide more supportive maternity leave policies and should seek to minimize negative career impacts (e.g., reduced promotional opportunities) on pregnant employees. However, subjects also felt employers were too generous in making workload reductions for pregnant employees. While subjects believed more should be done to assist pregnant employees, they were unwilling to agree to support such actions with their personal behaviors. Opinions varied as a function of sex, age, and nationality of the respondent, as well as supervisory experience with a pregnant employee. Women, younger employees, non-U.S. citizens, and those without experience supervising a pregnant employee were significantly more supportive of pregnant employees, and indicated greater support for legislation to assist pregnant employees.  相似文献

Receiver operating characteristics (ROC curves) were obtained at six signal-to-noise ratios, with two response procedures, in each of three detection paradigms. In all three paradigms-one-interval and two-interval simple detection, and two-interval pedestal-a binary response produced ROC curves with slopes near unity at all signal levels, and a category-rating response led to ROC curves whose slopes decreased with increasing signal strength. This result is thought to be attributable to the varying a priori probability of signal presentation associated with our binary response procedure. The index of detectability taken from the negative diagonal of the ROC space was found to be invariant despite the differences in slope.  相似文献

We present data from three experiments examining the effects of objective and subjective expertise on the hindsight bias. In Experiment 1, participants read an essay about baseball or dogs and then answered questions about the baseball essay to the best of their ability, as if they had not read the essay, or to the best of their ability, although they read about dogs. Participants also completed a quiz about baseball rules and terminology, which was an objective measure of expertise. Results demonstrated that as participants' baseball expertise increased, their inability to act as if they never read the essay also increased; expertise exacerbated the hindsight bias. To test the effects of subjective expertise on hindsight bias and investigate factors underlying the relationship, participants in Experiment 2 ranked five topics in order of expertise and gave feeling‐of‐knowing (FOK) ratings for questions from these topics. Foresight participants then saw each question again and answered the questions; hindsight participants saw the questions and answers and gave the probability they would have known the answers had they not been provided. Hindsight bias increased with subjective expertise as did average FOK ratings. In Experiment 3, we experimentally manipulated perceived expertise but found that neither average FOK ratings nor hindsight bias was affected by experimentally induced expertise. Taken together, the results demonstrate that expertise exacerbates both objective and subjective hindsight bias but that an FOK, which likely exists only when expertise is naturally acquired, is necessary to engender the detrimental effect of expertise on the hindsight bias.
