Factors Predicting Success in Training and Employment for WIN Clients in Southern Nevada

In this study we sought to assess WIN clients with the USES General Aptitude Test Battery, the Basic Occupational Literacy Test, and the Jackson Vocational Interest Survey. The available data are analyzed for indications of success in training and eventual employment.     

Counseling and Psychotherapy: Strange Bedfellows or Cohabitants

Administrators in the employment service (and in other agency settings) frequently admonish counselors that they are to “counsel,” not to “do therapy.” Yet, the terms counseling and psychotherapy (or therapy), are both widely used, often more or less interchangeably. Although there appears to be general agreement that the two are not exactly synonymous, there does not seem to be that same general agreement concerning the differences between them. This article endeavors to present the three basic positions established in the literature and to suggest an alternative position for consideration by practitioners of the art (or science).     

THE EFFECT OF INTERACTION BEHAVIOR ON SOURCE CREDIBILITY,HOMOPHILY, AND INTERPERSONAL ATTRACTION

This study investigated the relationship between interaction behavior in a small group setting and the resulting perceptions group members have of one another. Trained raters coded the interaction behavior of subjects, who discussed a task-oriented topic in small groups. Results indicate that interaction behavior can account for a substantial percentage of the variance in group members’ perceptions of one another. Apparently, the same interaction behavior may simultaneously result in both more positive and more negative perceptions on the part of other group members, suggesting that different interaction strategies are appropriate for varying desired personal outcomes.     

WHY DOES JUSTIFICATION MATTER?

Abstract: It has been claimed that justification, conceived traditionally in an internalist fashion, is not an epistemologically important property. I argue for the importance of a conception of justification that is completely dependent on the subject's experience, using an analogy to advice. The epistemological importance of a property depends on two desiderata: the extent to which it guarantees the epistemic goal of attaining truth and avoiding falsehood, and the extent to which it depends only on the information available to the believer. The traditional intermalist notion of justification completely satisfies the second desideratum and largely satisfies the first.     

SCIENCE AND SEMANTICS: THE CASE OF VAGUENESS AND SUPERVALUATION*

Abstract: It is widely assumed that the methods and results of science have no place among the data to which our semantics of vague predicates must answer. This despite the fact that it is well known that such prototypical vague predicates as ‘is bald’ play a central role in scientific research (e.g. the research that established Rogaine as a treatment for baldness). I argue here that the assumption is false and costly: in particular, I argue one cannot accept either supervaluationist semantics, or the criticism of that semantics offered by Fodor and Lepore, without having to abandon accepted, and unexceptionable, scientific methodology.

This article deals with a study of the work and leisure orientations of 516 university students and provides support for the enhanced role of leisure in career and lifestyle. Implications for college and university counselors engaged in the career-counseling process are also discussed.     

Observations on the First International Conference on Children of Holocaust Survivors

This first large-scale gathering of children of Holocaust survivors revealed — more from the unanticipated group process of the conference than from its official proceedings — that the second generation seeks a collective identity subordinate neither to the older generation of parents nor of mental-health authorities. Vital moments of tension and reconciliation at the conference between the children's self-help movement (with a sizable membership of young mental-health professionals) and distinguished mental-health experts indicated the legitimacy of intergenerational encounter and the place that it will likely be accorded in future meetings.
