It has been suggested that iconic graphical signs evolve into symbolic graphical signs through repeated usage. This article reports a series of interactive graphical communication experiments using a 'pictionary' task to establish the conditions under which the evolution might occur. Experiment 1 rules out a simple repetition based account in favor of an account that requires feedback and interaction between communicators. Experiment 2 shows how the degree of interaction affects the evolution of signs according to a process of grounding. Experiment 3 confirms the prediction that those not involved directly in the interaction have trouble interpreting the graphical signs produced in Experiment 1. On the basis of these results, this article argues that icons evolve into symbols as a consequence of the systematic shift in the locus of information from the sign to the users' memory of the sign's usage supported by an interactive grounding process. 相似文献
Many experimental studies have shown that touch increases compliance with a request; however, the difference between the effect of touch on compliance between participants who notice and those who do not notice such contact remains in question. An experiment was conducted in which a female confederate asked 368 female smokers to give her a cigarette. In the Touch condition, when making her request, the confederate slightly touched the participant on her forearm. Analysis showed the touch was associated with significantly higher compliance to the request, and a difference was evident in the Touch condition between subjects who had noticed the tactile contact and those who had not. 相似文献
OXlearn is a free, platform-independent MATLAB toolbox in which standard connectionist neural network models can be set up,
run, and analyzed by means of a user-friendly graphical interface. Due to its seamless integration with the MATLAB programming
environment, the inner workings of the simulation tool can be easily inspected and/or extended using native MATLAB commands
or components. This combination of usability, transparency, and extendability makes OXlearn an efficient tool for the implementation
of basic research projects or the prototyping of more complex research endeavors, as well as for teaching. Both the MATLAB
toolbox and a compiled version that does not require access to MATLAB can be downloaded from http://psych.brookes.ac.uk/oxlearn/. 相似文献
The capability of a new multitracking system to track a large number of unmarked fish (up to 100) is evaluated. This system
extrapolates a trajectory from each individual and analyzes recorded sequences that are several minutes long. This system
is very efficient in statistical individual tracking, where the individual’s identity is important for a short period of time
in comparison with the duration of the track. Individual identification is typically greater than 99%. Identification is largely
efficient (more than 99%) when the fish images do not cross the image of a neighbor fish. When the images of two fish merge
(occlusion), we consider that the spot on the screen has a double identity. Consequently, there are no identification errors during
occlusions, even though the measurement of the positions of each individual is imprecise. When the images of these two merged
fish separate (separation), individual identification errors are more frequent, but their effect is very low in statistical individual tracking. On
the other hand, in complete individual tracking, where individual fish identity is important for the entire trajectory, each identification error invalidates the results.
In such cases, the experimenter must observe whether the program assigns the correct identification, and, when an error is
made, must edit the results. This work is not too costly in time because it is limited to the separation events, accounting
for fewer than 0.1% of individual identifications. Consequently, in both statistical and rigorous individual tracking, this
system allows the experimenter to gain time by measuring the individual position automatically. It can also analyze the structural
and dynamic properties of an animal group with a very large sample, with precision and sampling that are impossible to obtain
with manual measures. 相似文献
A wealth of research in infants and animals demonstrates discrimination of quantities, in some cases nonverbal numerical perception, and even elementary calculation capacities. We investigated the ability of three African grey parrots (Psittacus erithacus) to select the largest amount of food between two sets, either discrete food items (experiment 1) or as volume of a food substance (experiment 2). The two amounts were presented simultaneously and were visible at the time of choice. Parrots were tested several times for all possible combinations between 1 and 5 seeds or 0.2 and 1 ml of food substance. In both conditions, subjects performed above chance for almost all combinations. Accuracy was negatively correlated with the ratio, that is performance improved with greater differences between amounts. Therefore, these results with both individual items and volume discrimination suggest that parrots use an analogue of magnitude, rather than object-file mechanisms to quantify items and substances. 相似文献
With increasing data on the dynamics of normative couples as they transition to parenthood and become a triad, the need for greater understanding of the impact of parental psychopathology on this transition has become clear. The goal of the current article is to begin exploring this area that has received little attention to date, by describing case examples from a study of clinical families as they transitioned to parenthood. Four representative cases were selected from a pool of 13 mother–father–baby triads, for whom the mother had been hospitalized conjointly with her infant due to a psychotic episode during the postpartum period. The families were observed as part of a clinical consultation that included a semistructured play paradigm known as the Lausanne Trilogue Play (LTP; E. Fivaz‐Depeursinge, & A. Corboz‐Warnery, 1999). Interactions were scored using standardized measures as well as clinical impressions. All families from the clinical sample were noted to struggle and frequently failed to achieve the goals of play. The impact on the infants in terms of their developing sense of self as well as their defensive strategies in this context are discussed, with clinical implications explored. 相似文献
Our previous studies provide some evidence of between-language effects on arithmetic performance in 2-year-olds. French-speaking children were especially biased by the use of the word un as a cardinal value and as an article in the singular/plural opposition (1 vs. the set 2, 3, …). Here we evaluated the ability of a new action-based assessment method to avoid this bias. A total of 80 French-speaking 2- and 3-year-olds were confronted with impossible (1 + 1 = 1 or 1 + 1 = 3) and possible (1 + 1 = 2) addition problems that triggered the bias. The problems were either presented to the children by the experimenter (onlooker mode) or realized by themselves (actor mode). The 2-year-olds performed better in the actor mode than in the onlooker mode. A subtraction control with no language ambiguity (2-1 = 2 or 1) was conducted with 80 other children; both modes elicited comparable performances regardless of age. These data indicate that the actor mode is effective for assessing arithmetic ability in French-speaking 2-year-olds. 相似文献
The present research investigated whether assessing adolescent elite athletes’ motivational profiles at the beginning of the
season would allow us to predict their subsequent performance over the course of a competitive season. In two studies, athletes
completed the French version of the Sport Motivation Scale (Brière et al., Int J Sport Psychol 26:465–489, 1995) at the beginning of the season. Objective levels of performance were recorded for the following season, as well as for the
season prior to questionnaire completion. In Study 1, the sample comprised a total of 170 French junior national tennis players
(M = 13.42 years). Results revealed the presence of a four-cluster solution, reflecting different levels of autonomous and controlled
motivations. Results revealed that controlling for past performance, athletes with the least self-determined motivational
profile obtained lower levels of subsequent tennis performance than those in the three other (more self-determined motivational)
clusters. In Study 2, there were a total of 250 French junior national fencers aged 15 years. Results revealed a three-cluster
solution very similar to that of Study 1. In addition, in line with Study 1, results revealed that the least self-determined
motivational profile led to the lowest level of performance. Overall, these findings suggest that cluster analysis is useful
in the understanding of the complex relationship between motivation and performance in elite sport.
Research seeking to explain the perpetration of violence and atrocities by humans against other humans offers both social and individualistic explanations, which differ namely in the roles attributed to empathy. Prominent social models suggest that some manifestations of inter-human violence are caused by parochial attitudes (attitudes characterized by interests centred on one's own community) and obedience reinforced by within-group empathy. Individualistic explanations of violence, by contrast, posit that stable intra-individual characteristics of the brain and personality of some individuals lead them to commit violence and atrocities. An individualistic explanation argues that the chief cause of violence is the perpetrator’'s lack of empathy with the victim. To offer the rudiments of a critique of the individualistic approach, I critically examine a model stating that violence is caused by empathy erosion (Baron-Cohen 2011). Specifically, the discussion of the empathy-erosion model is applied to the case of honour-based violence (HBV), a type of violence known for its communal character. Building from prior enquiries into violence and social cognition, I argue that an empathy-erosion explanation of HBV is defective because it does not consider important cultural and historical enablers of violence. Finally, as an alternative to individualism, I propose a psychohistorical approach to HBV in the migration context. This alternative combines psychological and philosophical enquiry with historical and ethnographical analysis. The psychohistorical approach hypothesises that distinct processes of cultural learning of honour codes both scaffold HBV and modulate the perpetrators’ emotions and empathy.
Taking on the study of triadic interactions necessitates a dual perspective—one focusing on the triad as a whole and the other on the organization of its parts. Our method associates the framework of systems theory with the ethological-microanalytical approach. We use it both as a clinical tool and to analyze thoroughly visible interactions in single cases, leading to the comparison of problematic and nonproblematic families in order to explore and generate hypotheses. To introduce our methodology, we first present the Lausanne triadic play exercise, which we designed for the observation of the triad as a whole while systematically varying the individual contributions. We then describe our method for analyz ing the triadic interactions on the upper body, lower body, and gaze levels. We illustrate it through the analysis of two contrasting families with 17-week-old babies which, on clinical grounds, represent key aspects of interaction found in our population. 相似文献
