Socialization is the important process by which individuals learn and then effectively apply the rules of appropriate societal behavior. Response modulation is a psychobiological process theorized to aid in socialization by allowing individuals to utilize contextual information to modify ongoing behavior appropriately. Using Hare’s (1991) Psychopathy Checklist and the Welsh (1956) anxiety scale, researchers have identified a relatively specific form of a response modulation deficit in low-anxious, Caucasian psychopaths. Preliminary evidence suggests that the Antisocial Process Screening Device (APSD; Frick & Hare, 2001) may be used to identify children with a similar vulnerability. Using a representative community sample of 308
16-year-olds from the Child Development Project (Dodge, Bates, & Pettit, 1990), we tested and corroborated the hypotheses that participants with relatively low anxiety and high APSD scores would display poorer passive avoidance learning and less interference on a spatially separated, picture-word Stroop task than controls. Consistent with hypotheses, the expected group differences in picture-word Stroop interference were found with male and female participants, whereas predicted differences in passive avoidance were specific to male participants. To the extent that response modulation deficits contributing to poor socialization among psychopathic adult offenders also characterize a subgroup of adolescents with mild conduct problems, clarification of the developmental processes that moderate the expression of this vulnerability could inform early interventions. 相似文献

There is a debate among search theorists as to whether search exploits a memory for rejected distractors. We addressed this
question by monitoring eye movements and explicitly marking objects visited by gaze during search. If search is memoryless,
markers might be used to reduce distractor reinspections and improve search efficiency, relative to a no-marking baseline.
However, if search already uses distractor memory, there should be no differences between marking and no-marking conditions.
In four experiments, with stimuli ranging from Os and Qs to realistic scenes, two consistent data patterns emerged: (1) Marking
rejected distractors produced no systematic benefit for search efficiency, as measured by reinspections, reaction times, or
errors, and (2) distractor reinspection rates were, overall, extremely low. These results suggest that search uses a memory

Up to 50% of an individuals' performance across a wide variety of distinct cognitive tests can be accounted for by a single factor (i.e., "general intelligence"). Despite its ubiquity, the processes or mechanisms regulating this factor are a matter of considerable debate. Although it has been hypothesized that working memory may impact cognitive performance across various domains, tests have been inconclusive due to the difficulty in isolating working memory from its overlapping operations, such as verbal ability. We address this problem using genetically diverse mice, which exhibit a trait analogous to general intelligence. The general cognitive abilities of CD-1 mice were found to covary with individuals' working memory capacity, but not with variations in long-term retention. These results provide evidence that independent of verbal abilities, variations in working memory are associated with general cognitive abilities, and further, suggest a conservation across species of mechanisms and/or processes that regulate cognitive abilities. 相似文献

The short form of the Conners-Wells Adolescent Self-Report Scale (CASS:Short) is administered to 319 children and 844 adolescents to investigate whether the instrument can be used with respondents under the age of 12. Mothers of all respondents are asked to rate each child using a measure designed to assess a parallel set of problem behaviors. The factor structure of the CASS:Short is tested in both samples and is found to have good fit to the data. Mean levels of ADHD symptomatology are also examined for possible sex and age effects, as was the relationship between parent and self-report ratings. When displaying text on a page or a screen, only a finite number of characters can be presented on a single line. If the text exceeds that finite value, then text wrapping occurs. Often this process results in longer, more difficult to process words being positioned at the start of a line. We conducted an eye movement study to examine how this artefact of text wrapping affects passage reading. This allowed us to answer the question: should word difficulty be used when determining line breaks? Thirty-nine participants read 20 passages where low-frequency target words were either line-initial or line-final. There was no statistically reliable effect of our manipulation on passage reading time or comprehension despite several effects at a local level. Regarding our primary research question, the evidence suggests that word difficulty may not need to be accounted for when determining line breaks and assigning words to new lines. 相似文献

Recent physiological observations in which stimuli with opposite contrast signs in the two eyes have been used (anticorrelated stereograms) show that these stimuli evoke responses in primary visual cortex which are the reverse of responses to correlated stimuli. Psychophysical investigations reveal no such reversals: reversed-contrast bars with crossed disparities are seen in front of those with uncrossed disparities. For anticorrelated random-dot stereograms human subjects perceive no depth at all, except at low dot densities. However, these human studies were carried out with stimuli that differed in several ways from those used in physiological studies. We therefore reexamined psychophysical responses using stimuli similar to those used for physiological recordings. Our results confirm the previous findings: there is no evidence of a reversed depth sensation for bar stereograms (crossed disparities are never seen behind uncrossed disparities), and subjects are unable to detect depth in anticorrelated random-dot stereograms at the densities used for the physiological recordings. The discrepancy between the psychophysical data and the responses of single neurons in primary visual cortex suggests that further processing outside area V1 is necessary to provide the signals that produce the sensation of stereoscopic depth. 相似文献
