This study tested whether computers embedded with the most minimal gender cues will evoke gender-based stereotypic responses. Using an experimental paradigm (N = 40) that involved computers with voice output, the study tested 3 gender-based stereotypes under conditions in which all suggestions of gender were removed, with the sole exception of vocal cues. In all 3 cases, gender-stereotypic responses were obtained. Because the experimental manipulation involved no deception regarding the source of the voices. this study presents evidence that the tendency to gender stereotype is extremely powerful, extending even to stereotyping of machines. 相似文献

The majority of middle-class high school students now work at part-time jobs during the academic year. During in-depth interviews, 35 seniors at a predominantly middle-class high school were asked to relate their jobs, or their decisions not to work, to the social contexts of employment. Attitudes toward the workplace and interpretations of the work ethic were analyzed within these contexts in order to examine the role of part-time employment in their lives. The findings of this study suggest that a negative stereotype of the high school student-worker is not justified. Instead, part-time work upholds a variety of interpretations of the work ethic within the framework of normative middle-class values. Future studies are needed to relate part-time work among adolescents to social and economic as well as developmental perspectives. 相似文献

This study investigated the second-decade effects of the Buffalo Creek dam collapse and flood that occurred in West Virginia in 1972. One hundred twenty-one survivors who had participated in an earlier lawsuit against the coal company that built the collapsed dam were compared to 78 nonlitigant survivors on self-reported symptoms, clinical ratings, and diagnoses. A nonexposed sample from a geographically and culturally similar neighborhood was investigated as well. Findings showed no differences between the litigant and nonlitigant survivor groups. The survivor groups together showed higher rates of anxiety, depression, and hostility symptoms and diagnoses than the nonexposed sample. The findings were discussed in the context of the nature of the traumatic event, social and cultural influences on recovery, and the constellation of symptoms which differentiated the groups. 相似文献

The effect of increasing the total area of stimulation on the sensations of irritation produced by topical application of capsaicin was studied in two experiments. In the first experiment, stimulus area was varied by changing the size of filter paper disks on which capsaicin was delivered to the skin of the forearm. Subjects rated the intensity and quality of the cutaneous sensations over a 15-min period. Increasing stimulus area by a factor of 15 resulted in a relatively modest increase in the peak perceived intensity of irritation, a shortening of the latency to the onset of irritation, and shifts in the frequency of reports of sensations of itching and stinging/pricking. However, itch was the most frequently reported sensation regardless of stimulus size. In Experiment 2, stimulus area was manipulated by varying the number of stimuli applied to the skin. Despite a smaller difference in total stimulus areas (9-fold vs. 15-fold), the difference in perceived irritation was more pronounced than it was in Experiment 1 and reached statistical significance. It is therefore concluded that spatial summation does occur in the afferent system or systems responsible for the perception of capsaicin on the skin. This result is consistent with previous reports of summation at the threshold for heat pain and constitutes new information about the spatial integration of pruritic stimulation. 相似文献

Conditioned flavor aversions induced by pairing flavored fluids with ionizing irradiation, lithium chloride, estrogen, or centrifugal rotation have been blocked by prior administration of chlorpheniramine. The blockade may be due to state dependency. This possibility was evaluated in the present experiment, which assigned female Long-Evans rats to a factorial combination of chlorpheniramine (20 mg/kg) vs saline during training, centrifugal rotation (150 rpm for 15 min) vs none as an UCS, and chlorpheniramine vs saline in testing. Rats conditioned with saline and rotation showed strong aversions when tested with either same or chlorpheniramine. Rats conditioned with chlorpheniramine and rotation showed no change during conditioning; when tested with saline they showed no aversion, and when tested with chlorpheniramine they showed no change from conditioning. Rats conditioned with either chlorpheniramine or saline and no rotation showed high fluid intake when tested with saline and reduced fluid intake when tested with chlorpheniramine. There are many opportunities in a family's daily routine to enrich the interactions among its members. One such opportunity arises at family restaurants. Surveys of restaurant personnel and customers suggested the possibility of enriching family interactions by redesigning indigenous materials such as table placemats. Accordingly, we developed Table-Talk placemats that provided conversational topics and illustrated games in which the entire family could participate. After some testing of these placemats in a preschool, a field experiment was conducted with families dining in restaurants. Table-Talk placements occasioned more social and educational dialogue among family members than either traditional-placemat or no-material conditions. Social validation ratings provided by mental health counselors and the parents suggested that Table-Talk placemats occasioned healthy and enjoyable interactions among family members. 相似文献
