Studies have found evidence that, after playing violent videogames for 20 min, people experience a mean short‐term increase in aggression, hostility, and anger. The current research investigated whether or not players habituate during longer, more realistic lengths of play. Participants (N = 98) were randomly assigned to play the game Quake III Arena for either 20 or 60 min. Participants in the long condition showed a smaller change in state anger (CSA) from pre‐ to post‐gameplay than those in the short condition, although this did not reach significance. Change in scores for gamers (not novice players) showed that short gaming led to a larger increase in anger ratings than long gaming. When the results for violent videogame players were analysed separately, there was no significant increase in anger post‐gameplay—irrespective of length of time playing. Results also supported the hypotheses that females would show a significantly larger CSA than males and that participants previously unexposed to violent videogames would show a significantly larger CSA than exposed participants.  相似文献

Due to the highly variable nature of predation risk, prey animals need to continuously collect information regarding the risk posed by predators. One question that ensues is how long to use this information for? An adaptive framework of predator-related information use predicted that certainty should influence the duration for which information regarding the threatening nature of a species is used in decision-making. It predicts that uncertainty contributes to the reduction in the duration of information use, due to the cost of displaying antipredator behaviours towards non-threatening species. Here, we test this prediction using repetition of conditioning events as a way to increase the certainty associated with the predatory nature of a novel salamander for woodfrog tadpoles. Tadpoles were conditioned 1, 2 or 4 times to recognize a novel salamander as a predator and subsequently tested for their response to the salamander 1?day or 11?days post-conditioning. We found that conditioning repetition did not affect the intensity with which tadpoles learned to respond to the salamander after 1?day. However, after 11?days, tadpoles with fewer conditionings responded to the salamander with a weaker intensity than those that received more conditionings. Our results provide support for the model prediction that an increase in the certainty associated with correctly identifying a predator leads to longer retention of the threat.  相似文献

The perception of being a burden to others has been associated with suicidal ideation and behavior. Maladaptive aspects of perfectionism have also been associated with suicidal thinking and behavior. The purpose of the current study was to investigate whether perceived burdensomeness would act as a mediator between maladaptive perfectionism and suicidal ideation. Results indicated that perceived burdensomeness mediated the relationship between maladaptive perfectionism and suicidal ideation, which suggest that the perception of burdensomeness may be one aspect of the mechanism by which perfectionism can lead to such psychological distress that it becomes a predictor of suicidal ideation. Clinical implications of this relationship are discussed.  相似文献

The present study examined the predictive validity of Cluster C personality disorders (CCPDs) on major depressive disorder (MDD), using Waves 1 and 2 of the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC, N = 34,653; time interval equals 3 years). Multiple logistic regression analyses were utilized to compare respondents with MDD and a concurrent CCPD to those with MDD only. Findings demonstrated that individuals with MDD and a comorbid CCPD were significantly more likely than those with MDD only to have MDD at Time 2. The presence of comorbid CCPD in individuals with MDD also predicts the subsequent occurrence of suicide attempts at Time 2 and the new onset of Axis I anxiety disorders. The chronic and enduring personality styles and interpersonal difficulties that characterize individuals with a CCPD likely lead to the exacerbation of MDD symptoms. Clinicians should be aware of the impact that CCPDs have on the outcome of MDD.  相似文献

Mattering is the extent to which we make a difference in the world around us. People matter simply because: others attend to them (awareness), invest themselves in them (importance), or look to them for resources (reliance). We construct and validate a mattering index, using confirmatory factor analysis. We establish the discriminant validity of the mattering index, using self-consciousness, self-esteem, self-monitoring, alienation, and perceived social support. Finally, we discuss the potential importance of mattering as a dimension of the self-concept.  相似文献
