Proprioception and Stimulus-Response Compatibility

Sixteen subjects pressed a left or right key in response to lateralized visual stimuli, in uncrossed (left index finger on left key, right finger on right key) and crossed conditions (left finger on right key and vice versa), with varying finger separations. Visual, tactile, or 'efference copy' cues about relative finger positions were unavailable. Subjects had to press the key on the same side as (compatible group) or opposite side to the stimulus (incompatible group). Separate proprioceptive judgements of the relative finger positions were obtained. Findings of an overall reaction time (RT) advantage for compatible instructions and for uncrossed hands were replicated. With decreasing finger separation the RT advantage for compatible instructions decreased, and the probability of responding with either hand increased. The compatibility effect disappeared completely at the 6-cm crossed position, not at the position that was hardest to judge proprioceptively. This suggests that two forms of neural activation are summed: automatic activation of the anatomically same-side limb, and an integrated, rule-based activation. The results further demonstrate that independent proprioceptive cues from each limb, unassociated with skin contact between the limbs, can mediate the determination of relative position for response selection in stimulus-response compatibility tasks.     

Against transglobal reliabilism

David Henderson and Terry Horgan argue that doxastic epistemic justification requires the transglobal reliability of the belief-forming process. Transglobal reliability is reliability across a wide range of experientially possible global environments. Focusing on perception, I argue that justification does not require transglobal reliability, for perception is non-accidentally reliable and confers justification but not always transglobally reliable. Transglobal reliability is an epistemically desirable property of belief-forming processes, but not necessary for justification.     

Chunk and permeate III: the Dirac delta function

Dirac’s treatment of his well known Delta function was apparently inconsistent. We show how to reconstruct his reasoning using the inconsistency-tolerant technique of Chunk and Permeate. In passing we take note of limitations and developments of that technique.     

How Do Mothers Help Their Children Sleep at Night? Night‐waking Strategy Use Among Mothers of Preschool‐aged Children

Night‐waking is common among preschool‐aged children. Little is known about night‐time parenting among parents of preschool‐aged children. To explore night‐waking strategy use in a community sample, 203 mothers (M age = 32 years, SD = 5.1; children's M age = 3.4 years, SD = 1.0) completed the Night‐waking Strategy Scale (NSS) and measures of general parenting, agreement with night‐waking strategies, and children's sleep. Children were grouped by age (2‐, 3‐, and 4‐to‐5‐year‐olds). Mothers endorsed using routines most frequently, followed by active comforting and rewards; limit‐setting and punishment were used less often. NSS punishment and routines were significantly associated with parenting (e.g. laxness was correlated with NSS routines, rs = ?.35 to .47, p < .001). Night‐waking strategy use was correlated with agreement with those strategies (e.g. active comforting was correlated with agreement with active comforting rs = .35 to .52, p < .001). Active comforting was correlated with the frequency of children's night‐waking for 2‐ and 3‐year‐olds (rs = .35 and .38, respectively, p < .01). Mothers of preschool‐aged children in the community engage in a range of parenting strategies to manage children's night‐waking. These strategies are largely consistent with general parenting and agreement with night‐waking strategy use. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Angels and devils: sadism and violence in children

This paper looks at violence and sadism in child and adolescent patients. Psychoanalytic and developmental ideas are brought together to make sense of these children’s presentations and the clinical challenges of therapeutic work with them. Differences are outlined between cold and hotter forms of aggression. The contribution of Glasser and his concept of the core complex is central to the paper, as is an understanding of addictive processes often seen in aggression, including sexual aggression.
