This study examined the relation between teachers' perceptions of children's compliance to them and their evaluations of the children's intellectual competence. One hundred and nine boys and 94 girls from 25 preschools participated in the study. Evaluations of the children's intellectual competence and their compliance to teachers were provided by teachers from each preschool. The children were given measures of intelligence and problem solving, which together with age and compliance to teachers were used to predict the teachers' evaluations of the children's intellectual competence. Only IQ and age significantly predicted teachers' evaluations of boys' competence. Teachers' evaluations of girls' intellectual competence were significantly predicted by age, compliance to teachers, and problem-solving scores, with the less compliant girls being perceived as less competent. The results were interpreted as indicating the possible influence of sex role bias on teachers' judgments of girls' intellectual competence.This research was funded by a grant from the Quebec Department of Education and was performed while the second author was supported by a scholarship from the Quebec Department of Education.  相似文献

Three studies were undertaken to explore the relationship between sex-role standards and the psychiatric referral process. Based on observations from previous literature it was hypothesized that children who exhibited behavioral characteristics inappropriate to their sex would be more likely to be referred to psychiatric facilities than would children who exhibited behavioral characteristics appropriate to their sex. The first study examined the records of an outpatient child-guidance clinic. In accord with the hypothesis, it was found that more boys than girls were referred for being emotional or passive and more girls than boys were referred for being defiant and verbally aggressive. In the two subsequent studies, samples of parents and graduate students in clinical and school psychology read hypothetical case studies in which identical behavior problems were attributed either to a boy (Bob) or to a girl (Barbara). The data from the two samples indicated that the child exhibiting the behavior inappropriate to his/her sex was seen as more severely disturbed, as more in need of treatment, and as having a less successful future than the child exhibiting sex-role appropriate behaviors.The first phase of the research was done in collaboration with Merrily Kaplan, whose ideas contributed much to the thrust of the rest of the research. The second phase is based on the first author's undergraduate honors thesis which was supported by NIMH Undergraduate Research Fellowship MH 08027. The hypothesis was tested that pre-menstrual and post-menstrua I increases in sexual activity are due to anticipation of deprivation and rebound following deprivation (Ford & Beach, 1951). Thirty-five married women completed daily questionnaires about their sexual activity for at least two menstrual cycles. Evidence supported the hypothesis that the post-menstrual peak in intercourse is a rebound phenomenon. There was less evidence to support the hypothesis that a pre-menstrual rise represents anticipation of deprivation. In addition, there was a tendency to increase autosexual activity during periods of sexual abstention, which may represent a compensation phenomenon.  相似文献

Stein and Glenn's (1979) story schema provided the framework for testing reading disabled adults' recall of stories that they had heard on tape, read orally, or read silently. For each category of proposition in the story schema, no significant difference was found in the proportion of statements recalled across the three modes of presentation. Further, the pattern of recall of different categories was similar to that which had been exhibited in previous research by normally reading children who heard stories on tape. The findings provide further evidence that the pattern of recall of story schema categories is similar across a variety of subject groups and situations. A possible explanation of this is discussed, as are possible explanations of the specific recall pattern obtained.  相似文献

Despite the increased recognition of the critical role of social and psychological factors in health and illness, the teaching of psychology is rarely integrated in medical education. Staff generally have minimal formal training in psychological concepts. Patients on the inpatient rehabilitation unit frequently present with unexpected reactions in response to acute trauma and resulting changes in identity and capabilities. Rehabilitation goals therefore, must be based on psychological, as well as physical, capacities. A one-page, user-friendly newsletter was designed to illustrate basic psychological principles via case vignettes. The topics of fear, countertransference, and resistance were selected as critical issues staff frequently encounter in their work with patients. The newsletters provided the staff with basic conceptual tools for effectively treating patients, and the work of psychologists was demystified. The newsletter format is proposed as a creative adjunct to didactic teaching.Copies of the newsletter Insight can be obtained by request from Dr. Gold.  相似文献

This research focuses on male and female observers' attributions of responsibility to a female accuser and a male accused of rape. Observers read 1 of 2 scenarios in which the accuser was either smaller or larger than the accused and then made judgments concerning each person's responsibility for what happened. The data indicated that the larger accuser was considered more responsible than the smaller accuser and the larger accused was perceived to be more responsible than the smaller accused. Females attributed more responsibility and had less sympathy, respect, and liking for the accused, whereas males attributed more responsibility and reported more negative attitudes toward the accuser. The results are discussed in terms of their implications for legal and health-care professionals.  相似文献

A factor analysis was used to determine whether induced loudness adaptation (Botte, Canevet, & Scharf, 1982; Scharf, 1983) and adaptation measured by Hood's (1950) classic Simultaneous Dichotic Loudness Balance technique (SDLB) would cluster on the same factors. The two phenomena did not cluster on the same factors; thus, induced adaptation cannot replace SDLB adaptation. Four independent factors that trigger auditory adaptation were identified in the factor analysis.  相似文献

In this study, male and female university students in the United States were exposed to mesomorphic or nonmesomorphic stimuli as reflected by photographs of either male body builders and non-body builders or female body builders and non-body builders. Then they were asked to attribute various personality traits and sex-role behaviors to them. Subjects, irrespective of their sex, perceived male and female body builders as possessing more traditionally masculine and less traditionally feminine personality characteristics than male and female non-body builders. Also, male and female body builders were seen as possessing less socially desirable traits than non-body builders. As predicted, female body builders were perceived generally as being more likely to engage in traditionally masculine sex-role behaviors in their dating and marriage relationships than female non-body builders. Contrary to expectation, however, male body builders were not perceived as more likely to engage in higher levels of masculine sex-role behaviors than male non-body builders.  相似文献

The primary focus in this study was anexamination of the differential contributions of twodifferent forms of competitive attitude to disorderedeating in a nonclinical sample of Caucasian universitywomen. The results showed that it is not competitionper se that is a primary contributor to eatingdisorders, but rather a particular form of competitiveattitude. Specifically, hypercompetitiveness was related strongly to eating disorder symptoms, butpersonal development competitiveness was unrelated. Asecond purpose considered the relationship ofcontext-specific measures of achievement to eatingdisorder symptoms. Disordered eating was associatedpositively with the need to achieve in appearance, butnot to a need to achieve in academics and career.Discussion centered on the potential usefulness of these findings in the treatment of women who areeating disordered. It also argued for changes in asocialization process which often leads to thedevelopment of hypercompetitive attitudes and anovervaluing of beauty in American women.  相似文献
