This multi‐method research linked the Big Five personality dimensions to aggression in early adolescence. Agreeableness was the personality dimension of focus because this dimension is associated with motives to maintain positive interpersonal relations. In two studies, middle school children were assessed on the Big Five domains of personality. Study 1 showed that agreeableness was associated with both indirect and direct aggression. In addition, the link between agreeableness and aggression was strongest for direct strategies. Study 2 examined the hypotheses that agreeableness predicts social cognitions associated with aggression, peer reports of direct aggression, and teacher reports of adjustment. Agreeableness predicted peer reports of aggression and social cognitions associated with aggression. In addition, aggression mediated the link between agreeableness and adjustment. Results suggest that of the Big Five dimensions, Agreeableness is most closely associated with processes and outcomes related to aggression in adolescents. Aggr. The self allows us to reflect on our own behavior and to imagine what others think of us. Clinical experience suggests that these abilities may be impaired in people with personality disorders. They do not recognize the impact that their behavior has on others, and they have difficulty understanding how they are seen by others. We collected information regarding pathological personality traits--using both self and peer report measures--from groups of people who knew each other well (at the end of basic military training). In previous papers, we have reported that agreement between self-report and peer-report is only modest. In this paper, we address the question: Do people know that others disagree with their own perceptions of themselves? We found that expected peer scores predicted variability in peer report over and above self-report for all 10 diagnostic traits. People do have some incremental knowledge of how they are viewed by others, but they do not tell you about it unless you ask them to do so; the knowledge is not reflected in ordinary self-report data. Among participants who expect their peers to describe them as narcissistic, those who agree with this assessment are viewed as being less narcissistic by their peers than those who deny being narcissistic. It therefore appears that insight into how one is viewed by others can moderate negative impressions fostered by PD traits.  相似文献

Daily supportive equity in close relationships   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Receiving support in committed relationships has frequently been associated with negative psychological outcomes in the recipient, such as increased distress. The authors hypothesized that these negative effects could be offset by support recipients' reciprocation of support, that is, by creating a sense of supportive equity. To investigate this hypothesis, the authors obtained daily reports of mood and of received and given emotional support from both partners in 85 couples throughout a 4-week period. Reciprocity in support transactions was associated with higher levels of positive mood and lower levels of negative mood. In line with previous research, receiving support without reciprocation was associated with increases in negative mood. Giving support, regardless of receipt, was associated with a decrease in negative mood.  相似文献

From the dawn of human consciousness, religious and spiritual expressions have been inexorably intertwined with some degree of assessment toward more effective care— whether such care is offered by shaman, imam, rabbi, shirpa, prophet, priest, pastor, physician, nurse, or lay minister. Currently, two major forces have brought spiritual assessment and care into sharp focus regarding the delivery of health care in the U.S. The first is the advent of managed care. The shift in emphasis from sickness-based to wellness-based reimbursement, spurred by spiraling costs, has brought close scrutiny to provider effects on patient outcomes. The second major force, related to the first, has been increased attention to alternative medicine and to previously unacknowledged adjuncts to traditional health-care delivery, most often understood by the terms holistic health or wellness. One of the sub-areas within holistic health is spiritual care. A measure of the increasing importance of spiritual care within the delivery of U.S. health care is the fact that the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Organizations (JCAHO) is gradually upgrading the place of chaplaincy services in the Standards. Thus, a clear, simple, user-friendly, inclusive, valid, reliable, useful diagnostic, care-anticipating, and outcomes-measurable spiritual-care model is becoming more a necessity in the increasingly demanding discipline of clinical chaplaincy.associated before retirement with the  相似文献

Bilateral transfer across ages 7 to 17 years   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The purpose of this experiment was to determine the effect of age on bilateral transfer. 96 girls, ages 7 to 17 yr., performed 14 trials on a rotary pursuit tracking task (45 rpm, 30-sec. trials, 10 sec. between trials). Half of the subjects performed the first seven trials with the preferred hand, using the nonpreferred hand on the subsequent seven trials. The order was reversed for the other subjects. There were no significant differences between groups in initial scores or in increases in time on target over the first seven trials, supporting the hypothesis that this was a novel task. There was an increase in time on target across ages and age influenced bilateral transfer, with older girls profiting more from the other-hand practice. Transfer was greater from preferred to nonpreferred than the reverse.  相似文献

Examined the attitudes, beliefs, and intentions toward self-help groups of 168 graduate students in clinical psychology and social work from five universities using the theory of reasoned action as a model (Fishbein, 1979). Participants held positive attitudes and beliefs regarding self-help and intended to collaborate. Participants who were members of self-help groups had significantly greater intentions to collaborate and had more positive beliefs vs. nonmembers. There were no differences between social work and psychology students. Path analysis showed that students who held positive attitudes and beliefs and perceived that their faculty were positive regarding self-help had intentions to collaborate with self-help groups. Involving self-help groups as partners in professional training was considered empowering and a wise use of the expert resources that groups can provide.  相似文献

Directly measured food intake in 31 overweight female smokers to test whether (a) calorie and carbohydrate intakes increase after smoking cessation and (b) double-blind d-fenfluramine (30 mg), a serotonin-releasing drug, suppresses weight gain, overeating, and dysphoric mood associated with stopping smoking. Placebo-treated patients grew dysphoric after smoking withdrawal and ate 300 kcal/day more from 2 to 28 days after, showing a 3.5-lb weight gain. Fat and protein intakes did not change, but carbohydrate intake increased (30% to 40%). D-fenfluramine prevented postcessation dysphoria. Although drug-treated patients ate more carbohydrate snacks just after quitting, they returned to baseline by 4 weeks, showing a 1.8-lb weight loss. Agents that enhance brain serotonin-mediated neurotransmission may help prevent weight gain, overeating, and dysphoric mood after smoking withdrawal.  相似文献

Interactive staff training (IST) uses principles of organizational psychology to help line-level staff members design and implement social learning programs for severely mentally ill inpatients. IST is a training package that includes assessment of staff perceptions regarding programatic needs, selection of appropriate social learning strategies to meet these needs, appointment of a program committee from within the ward to champion development of the social learning strategy, and participative decision making about aspects of the social learning strategy. Staff on an extended care ward at a state hospital participated in IST for 15 months as part of a pilot study of its effects. Ongoing examination of ward programing showed that IST significantly increased staff and patient participation in rehabilitation programing and decreased the rate of physical restraints and aggression-related. Changes in staff attitudes about rehabilitation programing were noted on a subsample of IST participants. Implications for more controlled research into IST are discussed.  相似文献
