Stereokinetic illusions occur when certain 2-D patterns are set in slow rotation in a plane perpendicular to the line of sight. Such phenomena have never been investigated in animal species other than our own. We used the domestic chick (Gallus gallus) to check whether these illusions are experienced by non-human species, taking advantage of filial imprinting. Newly hatched visually naive chicks were individually exposed for 4 h to 2-D stimuli producing, to a human observer, the perception of a stereokinetic cone (experiment 1) or of a stereokinetic cylinder (experiment 2). Thereafter, each chick underwent a free-choice test between a solid 3-D cone and a solid 3-D cylinder. A control group of newly hatched but not imprinted chicks underwent the same testing procedure, to check for the presence of any spontaneous preference for one or other of the two solid objects. Imprinted chicks approached the 3-D stimulus closely resembling the stimulus they had been exposed to during imprinting (the cone in experiment 1 and the cylinder in experiment 2). Non-imprinted chicks did not show any preference. These results suggest that domestic chicks experience stereokinetic illusions. 相似文献
Disoriented children can use geometric information in combination with featural information to reorient themselves in large but not in small spaces; somewhat similar effects have been found in nonhuman animals. These results call for an explanation. We trained young chicks to reorient to find food in a corner of a small or a large rectangular room with a distinctive featural cue (a blue wall) -- a task similar to that used with children. Then we tested the chicks after displacement of the feature to an adjacent wall. In the large enclosure, chicks chose the corner that maintained the correct arrangement of the featural cue with respect to sense, whereas in the small enclosure, they chose the corner that maintained the correct metrical arrangement of the walls with respect to sense. On the basis of these findings, we propose a simple model that can explain the effects of room size on spatial reorientation. 相似文献
The goal of this study was to examine if attachment theory can provide a framework for understanding treatment completion in an eating disorders partial hospital program among women with anorexia nervosa (AN). Attachment was measured using the Attachment Styles Questionnaire (Feeney, Noller, & Hanrahan, 1994). As hypothesized, self-reports of high avoidant attachment predicted noncompletion of treatment for those with AN binge-purge subtype (ANB). However, this relationship did not emerge for those with AN restricting subtype (ANR). Also as hypothesized, self-reports of high anxious attachment predicted completing treatment for those with ANB but not for those with ANR. For completers with ANB and ANR, the program was helpful in increasing body weight and lowering drive for thinness, body dissatisfaction, interpersonal problems, and depression. Attachment avoidance, characterized by devaluing one's need for relationships, may be a contraindication for group-based partial hospital treatment of ANB. Attachment anxiety, characterized by high preoccupation with relationships, may facilitate remaining in treatment for those with ANB. 相似文献
Disoriented children could use geometric information in combination with landmark information to reorient themselves in large but not in small experimental spaces. We tested fish in the same task and found that they were able to conjoin geometric and non-geometric (landmark) information to reorient themselves in both the large and the small space used. Moreover, fish proved able to reorient immediately when dislocated from a large to a small experimental space and vice versa, suggesting that they encoded the relative rather than the absolute metrics of the environment. However, fish tended to make relatively more errors based on geometric information when transfer occurred from a small to a large space, and to make relatively more errors based on landmark information when transfer occurred from a large to a small space. The hypothesis is discussed that organisms are prepared to use only distant featural information as landmarks. 相似文献
Current evidence appoints a central role to cholinergic interneurons in modulating striatal function. Recently, a long-term potentiation (LTP) of synaptic transmission has been reported to occur in these neurons. The relationship between the pattern of cortico/thalamostriatal fibers stimulation, the consequent changes in the intracellular calcium concentration ([Ca2+]i), and the induction of synaptic plasticity was investigated in striatal cholinergic interneurons from a rat corticostriatal slice preparation by means of combined electrophysiological intracellular recordings and microfluorometric techniques. Different protocols of stimulation were considered, varying both the frequency and the duration of the train of stimuli. High-frequency stimulation (HFS) (three trains at 100 Hz for 3 sec, 20-sec interval) induced a rise in [Ca2+]i, exceeding by fivefold the resting level, and caused a LTP of synaptic transmission. Tetanic stimulation delivered at lower frequencies (5-30 Hz) failed to induce long-term changes of synaptic efficacy. The observed elevation in [Ca2+]i during HFS was primarily mediated by L-type high-voltage activated (HVA)-Ca2+ channels, as it was fully prevented by nifedipine. Conversely, blockade of NMDA and AMPA glutamate receptor did not affect either LTP or the magnitude of the [Ca2+]i rise. Interestingly, the pharmacological analysis of the post-tetanic depolarizing postsynaptic potential (DPSP) revealed that LTP was attributable, to a large extent, to the potentiation of the GABA(A)-mediated component. In conclusion, the expression of LTP in striatal cholinergic interneurons is a selective response to a precise stimulation pattern of induction requiring a critical rise in [Ca2+]i. 相似文献
We propose a novel, ontological approach to studying mathematical propositions and proofs. By “ontological approach” we refer to the study of the categories of beings or concepts that, in their practice, mathematicians isolate as fruitful for the advancement of their scientific activity (like discovering and proving theorems, formulating conjectures, and providing explanations). We do so by developing what we call a “formal ontology” of proofs using semantic modeling tools (like RDF and OWL) developed by the computer science community. In this article, (i) we describe this new approach and, (ii) to provide an example, we apply it to the problem of the identity of proofs. We also describe open issues and further applications of this approach (for example, the study of purity of methods). We lay some foundations to investigate rigorously and at large scale intellectual moves and attitudes that underpin the advancement of mathematics through cognitive means (carving out investigationally valuable concepts and techniques) and social means (like communication, collaboration, revision, and criticism of specific categories, inferential patterns, and levels of analysis). Our approach complements other types of analysis of proofs such as reconstruction in a deductive system and examination through a proof-assistant.
Objective: The study investigated the associations between self-rated financial strain and overall diurnal salivary cortisol levels,
as well as secretory patterns among long-term unemployed individuals.Methods: Psychosocial and life-style variables were assessed by means of questionnaires among 85 participants (mean age 42±9 years;
56% females). Salivary cortisol was sampled on four occasions during a 24-hour period and data was analysed separately for
men and women.Results: Among females, high financial strain was related to higher overall cortisol levels, and to elevated levels in the evening.
These associations did not reach significance among men. Multivariate analyses showed that evening levels of cortisol were
positively associated with financial strain, but largely unrelated to life-style variables and psychological distress.Conclusions: The results suggest that high financial strain influences the diurnal cortisol secretion of unemployed individuals in terms
of elevated cortisol levels in the evening. The mediating mechanisms are in need of further investigation. 相似文献
Numerical competencies were investigated for the 1st time in very young nonhuman animals. Chicks (Gallus gallus) learned to identify the 3rd, 4th, or 6th positions in a series of 10 identical positions (Experiment 1). Use of spatial information (i.e., distances) was ruled out in Experiment 2 (chicks generalized the reinforced response to an array of stimuli rotated by 90 degrees as compared with training) and Experiment 3 (chicks generalized their response to a series in which distances between the single positions had been manipulated). Chicks found the correct position even when both identity and distance of each position changed from trial to trial (Experiment 4). Overall, young chicks seemed to use ordinality when required to identify a target by its numerical serial position. 相似文献
