AIMS: Evidence suggests a relationship between peripheral Abeta and AD. We hypothesized that higher levels of serum Abeta(1-42) would be associated with memory impairment, thought to occur early in the disease, and rises in serum Abeta(1-40), which occur later, would be associated with impairment in non-memory measures. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional design, we examined the relationship of serum Abeta(1-40), Abeta(1-42), and the ratio of Abeta(1-42/1-40) to neuropsychological measures in 40 cognitively normal controls, 13 MCI subjects, and 25 AD patients. RESULTS: Serum Abeta(1-42) and the ratio of Abeta(1-42/1-40) were significantly higher in the MCI group compared to the controls. A significant relationship in the hypothesized direction (poorer scores associated with higher Abeta(1-40) serum levels) was found between Abeta(1-40) and measures of executive functions across the entire cohort of individuals tested and with measures of language and processing speed in the AD group. Regression analysis found that neuropsychological measures accounted for 26% of the variance in serum Abeta(1-40,) in the MCI/AD but not the controls. Furthermore that language and executive measures were significant predictors. CONCLUSIONS: Results provide preliminary data to partially support our hypotheses and suggest that changes in serum Abeta levels may be attributed to pathological changes within the brain. 相似文献

The discussion presents a framework of concepts that is intended to account for the rationality of semantic change and variation,
suggesting that each scientific concept consists of three components of content: (1) reference, (2) inferential role, and
(3) the epistemic goal pursued with the concept’s use. I argue that in the course of history a concept can change in any of
these components, and that change in the concept’s inferential role and reference can be accounted for as being rational relative
to the third component, the concept’s epistemic goal. This framework is illustrated and defended by application to the history
of the gene concept. It is explained how the molecular gene concept grew rationally out of the classical gene concept despite
a change in reference, and why the use and reference of the contemporary molecular gene concept may legitimately vary from

Faculty continue to address academic dishonesty in their classes. In this follow-up to an earlier study on general perceived faculty student cheating, using a sample of business school faculty, we compared three levels of faculty classification: full-time non-tenure track (NTT, n?=?86), full-time tenured/tenure-track (TT, n?=?66), and part-time adjuncts (A, n?=?71). Results showed that NTTs perceived higher levels for three different types of student cheating, i.e., paper-based, forbidden teamwork, and hiring someone to take an exam. In addition, NTTs were more likely to report a student for cheating. NTTs reported a higher course load and average class size, and average class size was positively related to all five types of cheating measured. Given the predicted increase in NTTs across all disciplines, making sure that all faculty, (but especially NTTs), have the resources needed to deter student cheating is important. All faculty have an obligation to hold students accountable for their behavior. Individual integrity is paramount; and it is what employers expect. Regardless of the chosen field or discipline, an employer’s expectations, in terms of character, is to hire individuals who possess a level of honesty that is above reproach. Addressing cheating is an obligation that all faculty need to address purposefully. Providing resources to help faculty address cheating is critical. Resources might include conflict resolution training to provide instructors with the necessary guidance so that they can better handle these difficult situations. Intergenerational association of alexithymic characteristics for college students and their mothers.
The intergenerational association of alexithymic characteristics of mothers and their children were examined in a sample of 232 pairs of college students and their mothers. Scores on the Toronto Alexithymia Scale, Parental Bonding Inventory, and the Family Environmental Scale of college students were significantly correlated with their mothers' memories of when they were also 20 years old. College students' scores were significantly correlated with their mothers' scores on each questionnaire. The student-mother pairs were further divided into two family types, nuclear and extended families. Correlations were higher for scores of the nuclear family than for those of the extended family. Such results suggest there may be intergenerational transmission of alexithymia and related factors from mothers to children. 相似文献

This study has two main objectives. The first is to specify the nature of the mental representation and processes underlying spatial reasoning with diagrams and sentences. The second is to investigate whether mental representations reproduce geometrical relations relative to spatial reference frames. Forty participants solved 64 spatial reasoning problems that were displayed using diagrams or sentences. Problems varied with respect to their logical structure and geometrical content. We measured the premise's inspection times, the responses, and the response times. Problems were significantly (p < .01) easier to represent and solve when displayed as diagrams than as sentences, indicating that participants constructed mental models. Mental representations and spatial deductions also varied consistently with the geometrical content, suggesting that mental models reproduced this content relative to a viewer‐centred reference frame. 相似文献
