Do threatening or negative faces capture attention? The authors argue that evidence from visual search, spatial cuing, and flanker tasks is equivocal and that perceptual differences may account for effects attributed to emotional categories. Empirically, the authors examine the flanker task. Although they replicate previous results in which a positive face flanked by negative faces suffers more interference than a negative face flanked by positive faces, further results indicate that face perception is not necessary for the flanker-effect asymmetry and that the asymmetry also occurs with nonemotional stimuli. The authors conclude that the flanker-effect asymmetry with affective faces cannot be unambiguously attributed to emotional differences and may well be due to purely perceptual differences between the stimuli.  相似文献

In the arts emotionally negative objects sometimes can be positively judged. Defining an object as art possibly yields specific changes in how perceivers emotionally experience and aesthetically judge a stimulus. To study how emotional experiences (joy, anger, disgust, fear, sadness, and shame ratings, plus facial EMG) and aesthetic judgements (liking ratings) are modulated by an art context (“This is an artwork”) as compared to non-art reality context (“This is a press photograph”) participants evaluated IAPS pictures and veridical artworks depicting emotionally positive and negative content. In line with the assumption that emotional distancing is an essential feature of the art experience we found that positive emotional reactions were attenuated (joy, M. zygomaticus activation) in an art compared to non-art context. However, context had little influence on negative emotional reactions (anger, disgust, fear, sadness, shame, and M. corrugator activation) suggesting that these are similar in art and non-art. Importantly, only artworks of emotionally negative content were judged more positively in an art context — thus liked more. This study, in accordance with the assumption of a distanced aesthetic mode, shows that an art context fosters appraisal processes that influence emotional experiences, allowing to judge negative stimuli aesthetically more positively — thus suppressing the immediacy of emotional stimulus content.  相似文献

Using a generalized conception of experience, from which all features characteristic for higher animals (such as consciousness and thought) have been removed, allowed relating experience to adaptive processes in lower organisms. The temporal vector character of every current experience, containing as well memories of past experiences as intentions for future activities, can then be found in the adaptive response of cyanobacteria to alterations in phosphate supply, particularly in energetic manifestations of this phenomenon. A possible analogy between adaptive events as the “atomic units” of physiological adaptation and Whitehead's actual occasion of experience is discussed.  相似文献

Background

The present study examines the associations of psychosocial stress at work with depressive symptoms among managers.

Methods

In a cross-sectional study, 154 managers were questioned by means of standardized questionnaires measuring effort-reward imbalance at work and the German version of the CES-D scale. In addition to the effort-reward ratio separate ratios of the three reward dimensions were computed to analyze the effects of the three dimensions separately.

Results

After controlling for relevant confounders logistic regression analysis indicated an odds ratio of 4.4 for depressive symptoms among managers defined by an imbalance of high effort and low reward.

Conclusions

The results indicate that the three reward dimensions are of different relevance. Concerning prevention less significant health restrictions by depressive symptoms are to be expected by reducing the imbalance of effort and esteem reward at work.  相似文献

It is now well established that cannabinoid agonists such as Δ9–tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), anandamide, and WIN 55,212-2 (WIN-2) produce potent and specific deficits in working memory (WM)/short-term memory (STM) tasks in rodents. Although mediated through activation of CB1 receptors located in memory-related brain regions such as the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex, these may, in part, be due to a reduction in acetylcholine release (i.e., cholinergic hypofunction). To determine the interaction between cannabinoid and cholinergic systems, we exposed rats treated with WIN-2 or cholinergic drugs to a hippocampal-dependent delayed nonmatch to sample (DNMS) task to study STM, and recorded hippocampal single-unit activity in vivo. WIN-2 induced significant deficits in DNMS performance and reduced the average firing and bursting rates of hippocampal principal cells through a CB1 receptor-mediated mechanism. Rivastigmine, an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, reversed these STM deficits and normalized hippocampal discharge rates. Effects were specific to 1 mg/kg WIN-2 as rivastigmine failed to reverse the behavioral and physiological deficits that were observed in the presence of MK-801, an NMDA receptor antagonist. This supports the notion that cannabinoid-modulated cholinergic activity is a mechanism underlying the performance deficits in DNMS. Whether deficits are due to reduced nicotinic or muscarinic receptor activation, or both, awaits further analysis.Administration of both synthetic and phytocannabinoids, including Δ9–tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9–THC), WIN 55,212-2 (WIN-2), and CP 55,940, impair working memory (WM) and short-term memory (STM) through a CB1 receptor-mediated mechanism in rats (Lichtman et al. 1995; Lichtman and Martin 1996; Hampson and Deadwyler 1998, 1999, 2000; Braida and Sala 2000; Egashira et al. 2002). This suggestive evidence for endocannabinoid involvement in memory formation was confirmed by Terranova and coworkers (1996), who demonstrated that the CB1 receptor antagonist rimonabant facilitated short-term olfactory memory, and this was partially reversed by the muscarinic receptor antagonist scopolamine. This suggests an interaction between cannabinoid and cholinergic systems such that endocannabinoid tone suppresses cholinergic transmission. Consequently, rats pretreated with eptastigmine, a second-generation cholinesterase inhibitor remained unaffected by the full CB1 receptor agonist CP 55,940 when tested in an eight arm radial maze (Braida and Sala 2000). And more recent evidence from Mishima and coworkers (2002) suggests that a block of cholinesterase with physostigmine and tetrahydroaminoacridine protects against WM impairments induced by Δ9–THC. These findings further support a potential role of the cholinergic system in cannabinoid-induced memory impairments.The exact mechanisms for this interaction still remain elusive, although cholinergic projection neurons from medial septum to hippocampus are likely to play an important role (Harkany et al. 2003, 2005; Fitz et al. 2008). However, the neuromodulatory action of pharmacologically active cannabinoids on septo-hippocampal cholinergic activity in vivo remains unexplored. Within the hippocampus, cannabinoids presynaptically inhibit the release of acetylcholine, possibly through the activation of CB1 receptors located on cholinergic nerve terminals given that these effects were blocked by rimonabant (Gifford and Ashby Jr. 1996; Gifford et al. 1997a, 2000; Kathmann et al. 2001a). Direct in vivo microdialysis studies in awake rats also showed cannabinoid-induced decreases in acetylcholine release in the hippocampus through a CB1 receptor-mediated mechanism (Gessa et al. 1997; Carta et al. 1998). High doses of rimonabant alone increase the amount of acetylcholine release in the hippocampus (Gessa et al. 1997, 1998) either by blocking the tonic inhibitory influence of endocannabinoids and/or through its inverse agonism at CB1 receptors. Such actions are in agreement with a 100% greater increase in electrically evoked hippocampal acetylcholine release in CB1−/− mice (Kathmann et al. 2001b).In contrast, low doses of Δ9–THC (0.01–0.15 mg/kg), WIN-2 (0.01–0.5 mg/kg), and HU-210 (0.001–0.004 mg/kg) have been shown to enhance acetylcholine release (Acquas et al. 2000, 2001), indicating that cannabinoid modulation of acetylcholine release in the hippocampus is “biphasic.” This has been further supported by the work carried out by Tzavara and coworkers (2003), who demonstrated that low (0.5 mg/kg, intraperitoneally [i.p.]) and high (5 mg/kg, i.p.) doses of WIN-2 induce transient stimulation and prolonged inhibition of hippocampal acetylcholine efflux, respectively. This demonstrates that the dose of cannabinoids plays a key role in determining how much acetylcholine is released in the hippocampus.Such an interaction is likely to play an important role during the performance of a delayed nonmatch to sample (DNMS) task but has not been explored. Hence, a comprehensive pharmacological assessment was carried out here to (1) reveal the existence of such an interaction in terms of DNMS performance and (2) assess a possible cannabinoid-acetylcholine cross-talk on burst characteristics of hippocampal principal cells in CA3 and CA1.  相似文献

Creeping determinism, a form of hindsight bias, refers to people's hindsight perceptions of events as being determined or inevitable. This article proposes, on the basis of a causal-model theory of creeping determinism, that the underlying processes are effortful, and hence creeping determinism should disappear when individuals lack the cognitive resources to make sense of an outcome. In Experiments 1 and 2, participants were asked to read a scenario while they were under either low or high processing load. Participants who had the cognitive resources to make sense of the outcome perceived it as more probable and necessary than did participants under high processing load or participants who did not receive outcome information. Experiment 3 was designed to separate 2 postulated subprocesses and showed that the attenuating effect of processing load on hindsight bias is not due to a disruption of the retrieval of potential causal antecedents but to a disruption of their evaluation. Together the 3 experiments show that the processes underlying creeping determinism are effortful, and they highlight the crucial role of causal reasoning in the perception of past events.  相似文献

We take coherence based probability logic as the basic reference theory to model human deductive reasoning. The conditional and probabilistic argument forms are explored. We give a brief overview of recent developments of combining logic and probability in psychology. A study on conditional inferences illustrates our approach. Applying a person-centered approach, three personality types based on the NEO-FFI scales were identified in a sample of N = 141 participants by means of clustering methods. They were described as a resilient (low N, high E), a non-desirable (high N, low E, A, and C), and a reserved overcontrolled prototype (low E and O, high A and C). The prototypes were related to the level of aggressiveness, assessed by the Buss–Perry Aggression Questionnaire (AQ). Results indicate that the three clusters differ mainly in their levels of hostility, verbal aggressiveness, and with respect to anger. With respect to total aggressiveness, the non-desirable prototype displayed the highest and the reserved prototype the lowest AQ scores. The results are discussed in relation to studies based on a variable-centered approach. Possible implications for treatment and research are addressed.  相似文献
