The Role of Situational Interviews in Fostering Positive Reactions to Selection Decisions

We investigated the effect of interview format and employment equity program strength on perceptions of fairness. We used job seekers and vignettes to test the hypotheses. The participants reported lukewarm support for employment equity programs. The use of a situational interview in the selection process of an organisation that had adopted an employment equity program contributed to higher perceptions of fairness vis‐à‐vis the use of an unstructured interview. The results also showed that the inclusion of a situational interview in the selection process mitigated negative reactions to the selection decision when a strong employment equity program was in place as well as when a female visible minority was hired. Nous avons évalué l'impact sur la perception de justice du style d'entretien et de la rigueur d'une charte d'équité relative à l'emploi. On a fait appel à des demandeurs d'emploi et utilisé un test de jugement situationnel pour éprouver les hypothèses. Les répondants se sont montrés peu enthousiastes en ce qui concerne les chartes d'équité relatives à l'emploi. Le choix d'un entretien structuré dans le processus de sélection d'une organisation qui avait adopté une charte d'équité relative à l'emploi a amélioré la perception de justice portant sur un entretien ordinaire. Il apparaît aussi que la présence d'un entretien structuré dans le processus de sélection atténuait les réactions négatives consécutives au résultat de la sélection quand existait une sérieuse charte d'équité relative à l'emploi et quand était embauchée une minorité féminine non négligeable.     

Brightness indention: A novel compression mechanism in the luminance-brightness mapping

In a previous study, Schouten and Blommaert (1995) explicitly showed that brightness constancy implies a substantial compression in the luminance-brightness mapping. Here it is argued that additional compression mechanisms are required for scenes with large luminance ranges. To trace these, a series of experiments was conducted which involved expansion of the luminance range. We used a simple spatial configuration consisting of a disk on a contourless homogeneous surround (Ganzfeld). The contrast between the disk and Ganzfeld acted as the independent variable, while the size of the disk was parametrically varied. Sequential dichoptical brightness matches with a reference were carried out for both the disk and the surround. The results reveal a compression mechanism which we termbrightness indention. This indention, which has not previously been reported in the literature, only occurs if the Ganzfeld is less luminous than the disk, and it takes the form of a brightness decrease of the immediate surroundings of the disk.     

A model of a psychological service for adults in a formal educational setting

This article describes the development and operation of a psychological service addressing the needs of adults in a formal educational setting. The structure and content of the service differs significantly from that historically available to children or adolescents in Irish schools. The major elements in the service - induction course, workshops, personal growth groups, and individual counselling - are detailed. The present research builds on an earlier investigation by the same authors into the needs of adults in full-time education at Pearse College, Dublin.     

Semantic errors reconsidered in the procedural light of stack concepts

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the relevance of the stack concept in neuropsycholinguistics, a stack being a file with serially ordered elements. Number names (one, two, three, …) and the names of the days in the week may be viewed in this way. In a stack structure, any element is identified by two pieces of information: the particular stack to which it belongs and its position within that stack. Two experiments are reported that demonstrate a double dissociation. A deep dyslexic patient with agrammatism was found to sort stack elements on the basis of identity of position-within-stacks, while a fluent aphasic with semantic verbal paraphasias used another criterion, grouping together the items of the same stack. First revealed when handling number names, the two psycholinguistic procedures are also shown to be differentially operative with other linguistic material. Introducing the stack concept thus permits a procedural reinterpretation of some “semantic confusions,” particularly but not exclusively those dealing with quantities.     

The ‘crisis’ in social psychology,an empirical approach

The preponderance of empirical research in social psychology has ofren been a central issue in the ‘crisis literature’. However, no extensive empirical study has ever been undertaken vis a vis the ‘crisis’ in social psychology. In two studies, factors effecting the perceptions of social psychologists of their discipline were investigated. Although in the first study, among Dutch social psychologists, four hypotheses were tested and confirmed, a large part of the total variance in the perception of the ‘crisis’ remained unexplained. In the second study, both a worldwide sample of active social psychological researchers as well as a sample of authors of the ‘crisis literature’ were surveyed. The stances of both groups differed considerably. Although a majority of the active researchers did not agree that a crisis is at hand in social psychology, a large minority did. The active researchers agreed with many of the criticisms of social psychological research and theorizing. Attitudes on nine central issues, including the functioning of the editor/reviewer publishing system, predicted a large percentage of the total variance in the subjects' attitude toward the existence of a ‘crisis’ in their discipline.     

Visual temporal integration for threshold,signal detectability,and reaction time measures

A comparison was made of temporal integration for three different response measures in a visual detection task: (1) response frequency, (2) signal detectability as measured for rating ROC curves. (3) simple reaction times (RTs). These measures were obtained on the same trials, to the same stimuli-orange (581 rim) light pulses of 50 min of visual angle fixated foveally and presented to dark-adapted Os in a monocular Maxwellian view. All three response measures showed a period of luminance-duration reciprocity (Bloch’s law), followed by a period of partial integration. The end points of luminance-duration reciprocity (critical duration) and partial integration (utilization time) were shorter for RTs than for the response frequency and signal detectability measures. Neurophysiological.implications of differences in time constants of integration for RT and psychophysical measures are discussed.     

Retrospective questions and correlations

In survey research it is not uncommon to ask questions of the following type: “How many times did you undertake actiona in reference periodT of length τ?.” The relationship is established between τ and the correlation of the number of reported actions with some background variable. To this end it is assumed that the process of actions satisfies a renewal model with individual heterogeneity. Also a model has to be formulated for possible recall effects. Applications are given in the field of medical consumption.     

The perceived tempi of coherent and streaming tone sequences

Previous research has demonstrated that a sequence of tones that is alternated between ears is stretched out in echoic memory, as compared with monaural sequences. Although the stimulus onset asynchronies (SOAs) were the same in the interaural and monaural conditions, the perceptual onset asynchronies (POAs) differed by 24 msec. The present study investigated whether an analogous perceptual phenomenon exists for frequency-alternating tone sequences. It turned out that the POAs of coherent and even of streaming tone sequences were precisely the same as with nonalternating tone sequences.
