Three studies tested the valence-framing effect: that merely conceptualizing one's preferences as opposing something will make that preference more resistant to persuasion than will thinking about the same preference in terms of supporting something . In Study 1, participants who were led to conceptualize their political preferences as being against a candidate were more resistant to a counterattitudinal message than were participants who were led to conceptualize the same preference as being in favor of the other candidate. Study 2 showed that this effect was not due to a priming process, while Study 3 provided evidence for the effect's generalizability. 相似文献

Universities are facing a critical challenge; university citizenship has steadily declined over the last few decades. As a
self-governing entity, most of the foundational elements of a university community are within its own control. As a result,
the health and future welfare of the institution depends greatly on the quality of its leaders and robustness of its governing
structure. These in turn depend on the quality of those undertaking leadership roles and serving on governing bodies and on
the degree to which they reflect its values and aspirations. Maximising the probability that these desiderata will be achieved
requires a broad-based faculty willingness to serve conscientiously on these bodies and to serve as administrators to be involved
in selecting members, and to be involved on the myriad of sub-committees, task forces, departmental committees, and the like.
It is not only an abdication of citizenship to leave governance and administration of the institution to a few willing faculty,
it is dangerous and puts at risk the welfare of the institution. Even if these few were all able to place the welfare of the
institution above their own particular agendas and their self-interest (not something on which to count), the process of self-selection
could not be expected to result in a group that would adequately reflect, represent or understand the breadth and depth of
the needs, aspirations and complex circumstances of the entire institution. The larger the pool of willing participants, the
greater the probability that those selected will reflect best the institutional diversity. This paper draws out the rights
and obligations of faculty citizens embedded in the structural arrangements common to universities in the western world. In
part A we examine three fundamental components of those arrangements, components that collectively define certain rights and
entail certain obligations of citizenship. These obligations flow in part from essential rights, and also in part from what
is necessary to sustain the viability and vibrancy of the community. In Part B, we examine some of these essential obligations
of citizenship. In Part C, we make recommendations about how to promote effective citizenship; these recommendations are collected

This article identifies two fundamental outlooks and basic orientations of Christians living among Muslims in the context of the Middle East that result in two ways of being a Christian in that region. The origin of the two types, labelled the ‘Arab Christian’ and the ‘Eastern Christian’, is traced back to early Christian contacts with Islam, and the content of those two ways is explicated in their political, cultural and religious implications by briefly elaborating two contemporary Lebanese Christian conceptualizations of the two ways. It is argued that these two types provide a hermeneutical key not only for understanding the behaviour, actions and thought of Christians of the Middle East, but also for understanding and evaluating the perceptions of non-Middle Eastern writers and historians about the topic of Christians in that region. 相似文献

Video recording is currently part of in- and out-patient therapy programs for parents with infants. The observation and analysis of video sequences allow the patient to gain an extraordinary insight with respect to its own experience and behaviour. Video Microanalytical Therapy (VMT) looks for the mother’s positive qualities in her relationship to the child and employs these qualities in order to support successful interactions. VMT is well-suited to the treatment of mothers with postpartal affective or psychotic disorders, because the typical cognitive distortions and reduced perception shown by these mothers can be avoided to a large extent through the use of pictures. In this study, a video microanalytical therapy concept will be presented, that was developed for the treatment of postpartally disordered mothers at the Psychiatric Centre Nordbaden in Wiesloch, Germany. 相似文献

We hypothesized that organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs) represent a social dilemma. Two studies supported this hypothesis. In Study 1, participants rated OCBs as costly to an employee in the short run, and beneficial to an organization in the long run. In Study 2, likelihood of engaging in OCBs was higher among those high in empathy and concern with future consequences; and less likely among those instructed to imagine they would be leaving the company in 3 months for another job. Empathy showed a stronger relationship with OCBs when respondents imagined they would soon leave an organization and that individuals high in concern with future consequences were less likely to engage in OCBs when faced with a short‐term time horizon. 相似文献

The notions of finite and infinite second-order characterizability of cardinal and ordinal numbers are developed. Several
known results for the case of finite characterizability are extended to infinite characterizability, and investigations of
the second-order theory of ordinals lead to some observations about the Fraenkel-Carnap question for well-orders and about
the relationship between ordinal characterizability and ordinal arithmetic. The broader significance of cardinal characterizability
and the relationships between different notions of characterizability are also discussed.

This study examined the impact of a time efficient self-study method for providing practicing teachers with job-embedded professional development targeting specific classroom management skills. The training method employed print packets and videotapes that provided models of effective classroom management strategies for instruction-giving, praise, and time out. Participants were three master’s level speech therapists certified to teach speech and language delayed preschool children. The training materials were evaluated through observations of the teachers’ implementation of targeted practices in a multiple baseline across participants. Results indicated increases in all participants use of the management skills after training. The results suggest that this type of training method may help teachers increase their use of effective classroom management procedures. It is potentially noteworthy that the training program examined herein was largely teacher managed and was quite brief. Future directions and limitations of the study are discussed.Natalie J. Although fathers play a key role in helping their children develop ideas about gender relations and close relationships, they have been largely overlooked as a resource to help prevent violence against women. This paper explores some of the reasons why fathers have not been successfully engaged in violence prevention. Engaging fathers to promote wider definitions of masculinity for themselves and their children is presented as a major mechanism by which fathers could help prevent violence against women. The information-motivation-behavior model of change, developed for preventing high-risk sexual behavior, is applied to the area to provide structure for understanding previous and current attempts to engage fathers.
