Long-term effects of parental wartime captivity on children: Children of POW and MIA servicemen

The question asked by this study was: Are there possible second-generational effects, not only for children of prisoners of war and hostages, but also for children of parents who were/are missing in action? This report, reviewing the literature on prolonged parental wartime captivity in relation to longterm effects on children, with a specific focus on the Center for POW Studies of Vietnam era families, illustrates the strong relationship between mothers' and children's abilities to cope with their highly stressful and ambiguous situation.     

The relationship between long-term psychiatric clients' psychological well-being and their perceptions of housing and social support

This research tested hypotheses derived from motivation-hygiene theory that housing and social support would be differentially related to long-term psychiatric clients' Positive Affect and Negative Affect. The participants were 89 people between the ages of 18 and 65, who had been hospitalized for psychiatric problems at least twice and who had been diagnosed as schizophrenic, chronic depressive, or manic-depressive. Results indicated that the number of Housing Concerns was positively correlated with Negative Affect but not Positive Affect. Support Satisfaction was negatively correlated with Negative Affect, and Frequency of Support was positively correlated with Positive Affect. Interactions between the housing variable and Network Size were found for both Positive Affect and Negative Affect, thus supporting the stress-buffering hypothesis. The findings provided mixed support for motivation-hygiene theory.     

Differential thresholds for limb movement measured using adaptive techniques.

Differential thresholds for limb movement were measured in 10 subjects, using the transformed up-down procedure. Subjects were required to indicate which of two random displacement perturbations delivered to their forearms had the larger standard deviation (SD). The SD of the reference signal was fixed for each experimental condition at one of seven values ranging from 0.05 to 3.2 mm. THe SD of the other signal varied depending on the subject's response. Using this procedure, the differential threshold for limb movement was calculated to be 8%, which is very similar to the thresholds estimated previously for changes in limb position (9%) and force (7%). The sensitivity of the human proprioceptive system to changes in limb displacement was much greater than anticipated, with subjects being able to resolve a 5-microns difference between two perturbations delivered to their arms.     

The correlation of feature identification and category judgments in diagnostic radiology

Expert and novice radiologists were given films accompanied by clinical histories that supported a diagnosis either of bronchiolitis or of normal. To provide a plausible task context, some films were radiologically unambiguous and were accompanied by histories consistent with them. For a set of radiologically difficult films from confirmed normal or bronchiolitis patients, fictitious normal or abnormal histories were counterbalanced with the films. The clinical histories affected ratings both of diagnosis and of features present on the difficult films. Thus, uncertainty about individual features evidently was affected by history, and features did not act as an independent source of information. The dependence of feature calls on an overall judgment was also suggested by intra-observer agreement in another study in which an explicit diagnosis was not requested. It is unclear whether the history increased discrimination between normal and abnormal films, or indiscriminately added evidence for or against the disease. Factors are discussed that make it appropriate for feature identification to be partially dependent on category identification.

Understanding the Moral Phenomenology of the Third Reich

This paper discusses the issue of German moral responsibility for the Holocaust in the light of the thesis of Daniel Goldhagen and others that inherited negative stereotypes of Jews and Jewishness were prime causal factors contributing to the genocide. It is argued that in so far as the Germans of the Third Reich were dupes of an 'hallucinatory ideology,' they strikingly exemplify the 'paradox of moral luck' outlined by Thomas Nagel, that people are not morally responsible for what they are and are not responsible for. The implications of this paradox for the appraisal of German guilt are explored in relation to the views of a number of recent writers on the Holocaust.     

The use of time and trajectory forms as visual information about spatial scale in events

Spatial metrics are lost but temporal metrics are preserved in the mapping from events to optic flow. In marumate events governed by gravity, temporal scale is linked to spatial scale in ways specific to particular events. We tested whether time can be used as information about spatial scale in visually recognizable events. On average, observers were able to judge object size in event displays that eliminated information other than time and trajectory forms. However, judgment variability was substantial. After feedback on one event, observers judging distance performed better and generalized training to other events. Observers are sensitive to the general form of the scaling relation, but they require feedback to attune event-specific constants.     

The Present State and Future of Symbolic-Experiential Family Therapy: A Post-Modern Analysis

Symbolic-experiential family therapy (SEFT) is facing an important phase in its development. With the death of Carl Whitaker, it is not certain in which direction SEFT will be headed. This paper describes some of the challenges that SEFT presently faces and what can be done to surmount them. It is proposed that SEFT theorists and therapists concentrate on the post-modern components of the theory. By moving in a post-modern, constructionist direction, SEFT will be developing with a current trend in family therapy, allowing SEFT to continue as an important family therapy model.     

Irrational Beliefs and Behavioral Misregulation in the Role of Alcohol Abuse Among College Students

Two hundred three alcohol-using college students completed a questionnaire on their levels of alcohol use, moderate to severe problems with alcohol use, and measures of life stress, impulsivity, compulsivity, irrational beliefs, and depression. While impulsivity significantly predicted both alcohol use and problems, stress, compulsivity, irrational beliefs, and depression were found to only be significant predictors of alcohol use problems. When irrational beliefs, impulsivity, and compulsivity were combined to form an irrational coping scale, this construct was found in multiple regression analyses to completely mediate the effect of stress on alcohol use problems, while depression was a partial mediator of this effect. Results were interpreted in terms of Rational Emotive Behavior Theory.
