The suggestion that the cerebral representation of language is bilateral in at least some left handers relies on using the proportion of aphasics found in available clinical samples of sufferers of unilateral brain damage as a valid estimate of the probability that aphasia will occur following unilateral brain damage. This results in an overestimate of this probability since the clinical sample includes only cases with both unilateral brain damage and clinical symptoms and excludes cases with unilateral brain damage without clinical symptoms. A lexical decision response to an attended printed word can be slowed when the word is accompanied by an unattended word that is semantically related. Does this hold for an unattended word that is not related to the target word but sounds as if it is? The homophone WASTE can be shown to affect the lexical decision response to RUBBISH, but how does the incongruently related homophone WAIST affect RUBBISH? If incongruent homophones of words related to the attended word can influence processing when they are not being attended to, then it must be through automatic processing into a phonological code, either before or after lexical access. Experiment 1 reports such an effect, and it is concluded that a phonological representation is generated preattentively and influences the semantic processing of the attended word after generation of that representation. Experiment 2 confirms the effect and investigates the possibility that the effect exists because of the strategic use of phonological encoding of attended words. To discourage the use of a phonological strategy for lexical access, all nonwords were pseudohomophones. The influence persisted, however, with attended words still being affected by the presence of incongruent homophones of related words. 相似文献

This study attempted to test the hypothesis that the temporal structure of spontaneous speech is modifiable by reinforcing and punishing pauses, of a certain duration, in an operant conditioning situation. Pause rate was significantly affected by these contingencies: moreover, rate of change was rapid, indicating a prepared association between pausing and such contingencies. This study also attempted to test the hypothesis that there is a class of noncognitive pauses in monologue by punishing UPs to determine if UPs can be eliminated without affecting speech content. Although this manipulation did lead to a decline in pause rate, a significant increase in the amount of filled hesitation, particularly in repetition, resulted. This suggests that the overall amount of hesitation is fixed by the cognitive demands of the task but that a speaker is able to adapt to different interactional contexts by varying the category of hesitation used for cognitive planning. 相似文献

This randomized controlled trial tested the effects of a theory-based culture-sensitive HIV risk-reduction intervention among
496 inner-city African American adolescents (mean age = 13 years) and examined the generality of its effects as a function
of the facilitator's race and gender and the gender composition of the intervention group. Adolescents who received the HIV
risk-reduction intervention expressed more favorable behavioral beliefs about condoms, greater self-efficacy, and stronger
condom-use intentions postintervention than did those who received a control intervention on other health issues. Six-month
follow-up data collected on 93% of the adolescents revealed that those who received the HIV risk-reduction intervention reported
less HIV risk-associated sexual behavior, including unprotected coitus, than did their counterparts in the control condition.
Self-reported sexual behavior and changes in self-reported behavior were unrelated to scores on a standard measure of social
desirability response bias. There was strong evidence for the generality of intervention effects. Moderator analyses testing
eight specific interaction hypotheses and correlational analyses indicated that the effects of the HIV risk-reduction intervention
did not vary as a function of the facilitator's race or gender, participant's gender, or the gender composition of the intervention
group.
