Shifting from one task to another is associated with significant costs. Recently, it has been questioned whether the mere preparation for a forthcoming task, without the task’s actually being executed, is sufficient to establish a new task set that results in shift costs when the execution of a task other than the prepared task is required. In a go/no-go study, it is shown that the mere preparation for a task is sufficient to produce shift costs, but only under conditions that encourage participants to engage in advance preparation for a precued task despite the possibility that the execution of this task will not always be required, because of occasional no-go trials. In addition, considerable reductions of shift costs after go trials could be observed under these conditions. When such a motivating context was not provided, only negligible shift costs were observed after a no-go trial, indicating that no task-set configuration had taken place without the need to perform the task. Furthermore, under these conditions, prolonging the preparation interval resulted in reaction time benefits that were similar for task shifts and repetitions, again indicating that no active task-set configuration took place.  相似文献

We combined task switching with a change paradigm to trace the transformation of the information conveyed by task cues into a readiness to perform the cued task. The tasks were composed of two components that allowed us to determine switch costs as a function of the number of changed task components. With a short stimulus-onset asynchrony (SOA) of 200ms, switch costs grew monotonically as a function of the number of changed components. With a SOA of 400ms, the switch-cost profile exhibited a nonmonotonic characteristic that was previously observed only with switches from an already performed task. Our observations suggest that task preparation can be considered as a process by which an unstructured representation of task components is gradually transformed into an integrated task representation that comprises asymmetrical associations between the task components.  相似文献

The presence of location-dependent and location-independent benefits on object identification in an eye movement contingent preview paradigm has been taken as support for the transsaccadic integration of object types and object tokens (J. M. Henderson, 1994). A recent study, however, suggests a critical role for saccade targeting in the generation of the 2 preview effects (F. Germeys, De Graef, & Verfaillie, 2002). In the present study, eye movements were monitored in a preview paradigm, and both location-independent and location-dependent preview benefits were observed regardless of the saccade target status of the preview object. The findings support the view that type and token representational systems contribute independently to the integration of object information across eye movements.  相似文献

To perform a task that differs from a previously performed one, it is necessary to prepare for the new task as well as to disable the task set of the preceding task. In a series of three experiments we examined whether preparation for a task shift implies a direct update of the task set that is carried over from the preceding trial. To this end, in Experiments 1 and 2 we factorially varied the relation of the task in trial n, first, to the task in trial n - 1 (intertask relation) and, second, to the task that was precued for trial n (precue-to-task relation). Invalid precues resulted in substantial costs, which increased with longer precueing intervals. However, this increasing effect of the precue-to-task relation was not accompanied by a decreasing effect of the intertask relation. Furthermore, both effects had different qualitative properties. These findings suggest that two tasks can be represented concurrently but on two different levels of representation. In Experiment 3 we observed that the persistence of the effect of the intertask relation depends on the possibility that task repetitions can occur in trials in which a task shift is precued. This suggests that the persistence of the effect of the intertask relation is controlled in a context-sensitive way.  相似文献
