This study encourages an expansion of the counselor's role through an evaluation of the efficacy of certain cognitive training procedures in teaching young children skills for interpersonal problem solving. Twenty-seven students were blocked on school grades, balanced for sex, and randomly assigned to cognitive modeling and self-instructions (CM-SI), cognitive modeling alone (CM), or a control group. A two-week training program focused on generating alternative solutions and consequences. Results of a delayed posttest indicate that the CM-SI group generated a significantly greater number, variety, and proportion of relevant solutions than the control group. This article relates the findings to those in the literature and discusses interpretations. Highlighted are implications for practitioners concerned with preventive program development. 相似文献

An experiment was conducted using 211 upper division and graduate business administration students who evaluated hypothetical job applicants. The applicant was either an amputee, an epileptic, or "normal." The job either involved public contact or it did not; and, it either involved supervisory responsibilities or it did not. Generally, handicapped applicants were evaluated no differently than normal applicants. Epileptic applicants, however, were expected to establish better relationships with clients and customers as well as with other employees than were normal applicants. As we move into the next decade, greater student demands for counseling services, increased severity of presenting problems, and long waiting lists are becoming a reality at university and college counseling centers. These trends, coupled with limited financial resources, suggest that new models of case management and treatment are needed to maintain quality services. This article describes the development of a time-limited and managed-care treatment policy at the University Counseling Center at Colorado State University.
