Common Themes and Treatment Approaches in Working with Families of Runaway Youths

Running away behavior in youth has long been recognized as a significant social problem affecting not only the youth themselves but their families, schools, the local community, and law enforcement efforts. We describe common themes these youth and their families present when they enter treatment in a program that works in conjunction with local law enforcement. These themes include problematic interactions in relation to school performance, parents' inabilities to cope with their children's mental health concerns, cultural differences, divorce-related issues, and inappropriate family boundaries. The treatment philosophy and approach of the program are provided as are case examples.     

Work and Leisure Orientations Among University Students: Implications for College and University Counselors

This article deals with a study of the work and leisure orientations of 516 university students and provides support for the enhanced role of leisure in career and lifestyle. Implications for college and university counselors engaged in the career-counseling process are also discussed.     

Spirituality Reconsidered

Counseling and the helping arts in general have been hesitant to openly embrace the concept of spirituality as part of their working knowledge base. Part of the dilemma centers on sometimes confusing a religious view with a more secular conception of the term. Another potentially confounding element is the existing variety of ways the term is actually being used by both. In this investigation of the roots of the problem I hope to catalyze a more inviting and open dialogue as the profession considers the possibilities associated with an expansion or consolidation of definition(s).     

Within‐session supervision communication in the training of clinical psychologists

There is little research evaluating within‐session supervision communication in the training of clinical psychologists. This study evaluated the perception of 37 interns and 49 patients regarding communication between supervisor and intern during the therapy session. Most supervisors used such communication infrequently. While some interns and patients viewed call‐ins or walk‐ins as intrusive and unhelpful, the majority did not. Indeed, some valued the feedback. No association was found between the use of call‐ins or walk‐ins and patient reports of therapist behaviours or intern reports of supervisory style. It is concluded that within‐session communication is not deemed as necessary by most supervisors, who should remain cautious in their use of such communication, unless patient care is compromised.
