Violence is a spectacle. Not because it is simply something that we observe but, more fundamentally, because it is a mechanism through which we observe and define other things. Violence has the capacity to shape the ways that we see, and thereby come to know, these things. In other words, violence is more than a practice that acts upon the bodies of individual subjects to inflict harm and injury. It is, metaphorically speaking, also a way of looking at these subjects.

Valuegenesis: A Megastudy of Faith Maturity and Its Relationship to Variables Within the Home,School, and Church

Concern with declining enrollment and commitment in Seventh-day Adventist schools in the United States and Canada led to one of the largest studies ever undertaken by any church group. The research involved nearly 11,000 sixth- through twelfth-grade youth and another 2,300 parents, teachers, and pastors. The findings both encouraged and challenged the Church and underscored the cumulative roles that homes, schools, and churches play in nurturing faith and loyalty among Christian youth.     

PERSONALITY CORRELATES OF COMMUNICATION APPREHENSION: A RESEARCH NOTE

Research is reported indicating significant relationships between communication apprehension and 18 of 21 personality variables studied. High communication apprehension was found to be associated with a wide range of socially maladaptive personality characteristics.     

RECOGNIZING GOOD ATTENDANCE: A LONGITUDINAL, QUASI-EXPERIMENTAL FIELD STUDY

Three motivational theories (need, goal, and reinforcement) suggest that recognition programs should increase employee attendance. A 1-year, quasi-experimental field study of absenteeism was conducted at 4 manufacturing plants with a total 1,100 employees. The study compared a public recognition program for improving work attendance with 3 types of controls. The personal recognition treatment showed (a) significant decreases ranging from 29% to 52% for each quarter's baseline assessment, and (b) significant decreases when the control groups showed no decrease. Employees had favorable perceptions of the public recognition program.     

Survey Research Methods

This article presents an overview of the important stages and inherent problems of survey research and defines survey-related terminology. Particularly emphasized are the characteristic elements of survey research: survey designs, sampling theory, questionnaire development, and data collection procedures.
