Phonological theories have raised the notion of a universally preferred syllable type which is defined in terms of its sonority structure (e.g., ). Empirical evidence for this notion has been provided by distributional analyses of natural languages and of language acquisition data, and by aphasic speech error analyses. The present study investigates frequency distributions of syllable types in German, which allows for a rather complex syllable structure, and in neologistic utterances of a German speaking jargon aphasic. The findings suggest that the sonority structure of the patient's neologisms is generally in accordance with the notion of theoretically preferred syllables. Moreover, comparative analyses suggest that the predominance of the preferred syllable type is especially pronounced in the aphasic data. On the basis of these findings, the influence of sonority in impaired phonological lexical processing is discussed.  相似文献

Italian polysyllabic words with stress falling on the last syllable are written with a diacritic sign on the last vowel. It allows discrimination between two words with the same orthographic segments (e.g., papa [pope], papà [dad]). The effect of the accent mark in left neglect dyslexia has never been investigated. In the current study, six patients with neglect dyslexia were asked to read aloud homographic words and non-words, with or without the accent mark. The presence of the accent improved reading performance of three patients but only with real words. In contrast, two patients ignored the accent mark, even if it relied on the right ipsilesional space. We conclude that the accent mark is computed separately from letter identity and that it can act as an important cue for lexical access.  相似文献

Low sensitivity to amplitude modulated (AM) sounds is reported to be associated with dyslexia. An important aspect of amplitude modulation cycles are the rise and fall times within the sound. In this study, simplified stimuli equivalent to just one cycle were used and sensitivity to varying rise times was explored. Adult participants with dyslexia or compensated dyslexia and a control group performed a detection task with sound pairs of different rise times. Results showed that the participants with dyslexia differed from the control group in rise time detection and a correlation was found between rise time detection and reading and phonological skills. A subgroup of participants with lower sensitivity to rise time detection characterized by low accuracy in syllable-level phonological skills was found within the dyslexic group. Short stimuli containing only one rise time produced associations with phonological skills and reading, even in a language where the perception of rise time contrasts are not crucial for the signaling of phonemic contrast.  相似文献

Recent research revealed impaired processing of both nonliteral meaning and affective prosody in adults with agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) and normal intelligence. Since normal children have incomplete myelination of the corpus callosum, it was hypothesized that paralanguage deficits in children with ACC would be less apparent relative to their peers. The Familiar and Novel Language Comprehension Test (FANL-C) and Prosody Test were given to 18 children with ACC and normal intelligence and 17 controls matched for age (7-13 years), education, and IQ (83-122). When controlling for age, children with ACC were significantly poorer in comprehension of the precise meaning of both literal and nonliteral items on the FANL-C. Adults with ACC had previously been shown to have difficulty only on nonliteral items. The effect size for nonliteral comprehension in children with ACC was smaller than that seen in adults. There was only a trend for the child ACC group to perform worse on the recognition of affective prosody. Thus, while deficits in paralinguistic processing were apparent, children with ACC were not as clearly different from age peers as adults, and were equally deficient at comprehending literal and nonliteral expressions. The differences in results between adults and children with ACC are thought to reflect incomplete callosal development in normal children, and the importance of the corpus callosum in the early stages of the development of the ability to process literal language.  相似文献

The present study examined changes in timing at the transition from synchronization to continuation tapping and the role played by knowledge of the transition. Three experiments employed a pseudo-synchronization paradigm: At the transition, the pacing tones were replaced by identical feedback tones. In Experiment 1, participants were not informed when the transition would occur. Immediately following the transition, an acceleration of tapping was observed. In Experiment 2, participants were informed about the exact position of the transition, which was in addition marked by a pitch change. Nonetheless, the same acceleration occurred. Experiment 3 dissociated the actual from the expected position of the transition, without changing the results. In addition, the delay of the feedback tones was manipulated and was found to affect the rate of tapping in the continuation phase. A single delayed tone at the transition had no lasting effect, however. The results are interpreted in light of the synchronization-continuation model of Vorberg and Wing [Vorberg, D., & Wing, A. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of the swing leg movement on running stability. A simple model was used describing a forward hopping motion. The model consisted of two sub-models, namely a spring-mass system for the stance phase and a functional control model for the swing phase (represented by a passive or actively driven pendulum). To verify the main simulation results, an experimental study on treadmill running was performed. The results of the model indicated that for certain running speeds and pendulum lengths, the behavior of the mechanical system was stable. The following characteristic dependencies between the model parameters were observed. (1) Pendulum length and hip muscle activity determined running height and therefore swing duration. (2) Horizontal velocity was inversely related to leg angle of attack. Increased speed corresponded to flatter leg angles at touch-down, which is in agreement with experimental studies and previous predictions of spring-mass running. It was shown that a biologically motivated control approach with oscillating leg movements is well capable of generating stable hopping movements. Due to its simplicity, however, the monopedal model failed to explain more detailed mechanisms like the swing-leg to stance-leg interaction or the functional role of the leg segmentation. This simple model is therefore considered as a functional mechanical template for legged locomotion, which could help to build more elaborate models in the future.  相似文献

The supplementary motor area (SMA) is thought to play in important role in the preparation and organisation of voluntary movement. It has long been known that cortical activity begins to increase up to 2s prior to voluntary self-initiated movement. This increasing premovement activity measured in EEG is known as the Bereitschaftspotential or readiness potential. Modern functional brain imaging methods, using event-related and time-resolved functional MRI techniques, are beginning to reveal the role of the SMA, and in particular the more anterior pre-SMA, in premovement activity associated with the readiness for action. In this paper we review recent studies using event-related time-resolved fMRI methods to examine the time-course of activation changes within the SMA throughout the preparation, readiness and execution of action. These studies suggest that the pre-SMA plays a common role in encoding or representing actions prior to our own voluntary self-initiated movements, during motor imagery, and from the observation of others' actions. We suggest that the pre-SMA generates and encodes motor representations which are then maintained in readiness for action.  相似文献

An object phenomenally shrinks in its horizontal dimension when shown on a 2-D plane as if the central portion of the object were partially occluded by another vertical one in 3-D space (the Kanizsa amodal shrinkage). We examined the predictions of the correcting-mechanism hypothesis proposed by Ohtsuka and Ono (2002, Proceedings of SPIE 4864 167-174), which states that an inappropriate operation of the mechanism that corrects a phenomenal increase in monocularly visible areas accompanied by a stereoscopic occluder gives rise to the illusion. In this study we measured the perceived width (or height in experiment 3) of a square seen behind a rectangle, while controlling other factors which potentially influence the illusion, such as the division of space or depth stratification. The results of five experiments showed that (a) the perceived width was not influenced when the occluder had a relatively large binocular disparity, but was underestimated when the occluder did not have disparity, and (b) the shrinkage diminished when the foreground rectangle was transparent, was horizontally oriented, or contained no pictorial occlusion cues. These results support the hypothesis that the correcting mechanism, triggered by pictorial occlusion cues, contributes to the Kanizsa shrinkage.  相似文献
