Expression of Fos and Jun Proteins Following Passive Avoidance Training in the Day-Old Chick

It has been shown previously that the immediate-early genes, c-fos and c-jun mRNA are induced in the 1-day-old chick forebrain after one-trial passive avoidance training in which chicks learn to avoid pecking at a bitter-tasting bead. Here, we have studied the expression of their proteins using antibodies to Fos and Jun. Western blotting disclosed two immunoreactive bands for the anti-Fos antibody (47 and 54 kD) and two immunoreactive bands for the anti-Jun antibody (39 and 54 kD). Two hours post-training there was an increase in the number of Fos-positive stained nuclei in right intermediate medial hyperstriatum ventrale (IMHV) (P<0.01), left IMHV (P<0.05), right lobus parolfactorius (LPO) (P<0.025) and left LPO (P<0.05) of birds trained on the bitter bead compared with controls that had pecked a water-coated bead. Staining for Jun protein was significantly greater in the right LPO of trained chicks (P<0.01). Other forebrain regions showed no increase over quiet control levels. The findings are discussed in the context of the cascade of events involved in passive avoidance memory consolidation in the day-old chick.     

The differential impact on carers dealing with clients with challenging behaviours

This study addresses the effects of organizational culture on the ways in which carers in small community homes cope with clients with challenging behaviours. Results indicated that carers socialized in a traditional setting (i.e. large institutions) responded to challenging behaviours by becoming more negative in their attitudes towards clients. Strain levels in carers socialized in the Social Services were related directly to client challenging behaviours, and unrelated to their attitudes which remained positive.     

Personality organization as an aspect of back pain in a medical setting.

The MMPI profiles of 74 low back pain patients who had previously been classified as "functional,"organic," or "mixed" were sorted into six profile groups. The six profile groups were those used by Pichot, Perse, Lekous, Dureau, Perez, and Rychewaert (1972); denial, "conversion V" without defensiveness, "conversion V" with defensiveness, depressed/anxious, psychotic and normal. Results indicate that all six profile types are well represented in the low back pain group. Evidence is also presented which shows that each of the pathological MMPI profile types examined across "functional," "organic," and "mixed" classification is significantly more elevated than a normal profile group on two scales (Lb, DOR) designed to measure functional aspects of pain. Pathological MMPI profile groups did not differ significantly from each other on the "functional" pain scales. The data presented in this study point to the relationship of various forms of psychopathology with "functional pain." The findings of this study would not support a homogeneous "pain personality" for low back pain patients. However, combined "conversion V" profiles accounted for 58% of the "functional" group, 45% of the "mixed" group and 35% of the "organic" group.     

The sex discrimination act and the apu occupational interests guide: A reply to closs

Closs has suggested that the present interest differences between the sexes are a sufficient basis for guidance on career choice. It is doubtful, however, whether the practice of such sexual pre-selection is within either the letter or the spirit of the Sex Discrimination Act. It is accordingly argued that the APU guide is discriminatory and backward-looking. Though statistically excellent, it should not be used in its present form, but should be altered in accordance with contemporary morals and recent legislation.

Conclusion By the standards presented in the Introduction, CMFC2 is deficient on at least one ontological ground: ‘∀’ is a syncategorematic expression and so CMFC2 is not an ideal language. To some there may be an additional difficulty: any two wffs provably equivalent in the classical sense are provably identical. The beginnings of Gestalt psychology in the United States.

Robert M. Ogden's unrecognized contributions to the beginnings of Gestalt psychology in the United States are briefly discussed. It is proposed that he not only introduced Gestalt psychology to this country through his books, but was also instrumental in bringing Gestalt psychologists to America.
