In a recent experiment on tonal masking, Macmillan (1971) reported that recognition of increments and decrements improves relative to detection performance as signal duration is increased. It is suggested that this result is largely artifactual, inasmuch as Macmillan’s Os undoubtedly detected brief-duration signals by virtue of energy splatter produced by gating the signal on and off rectangularly. Since energy splatter produced by an increment is identical to that produced by a decrement, Os listening off frequency could not have possibly distinguished a brief increment from a decrement. 相似文献

An empirical study of test scores shows the variance of the errors of measurement to be significantly associated with true score in each of four groups studied; it also shows the distribution of the errors of measurement to be significantly skewed in three of these four groups. Use of true-score theory to predict moments of univariate and bivariate observed-score distributions
Formulas are derived for using the available item statistics and score statistics on a test to estimate the moments of the score distribution of a lengthened (or shortened) form of the same test. Other formulas are derived for estimating the bivariate moments of the scatterplot between two parallel test forms using only the data available on either form alone. An empirical study is made showing in each case satisfactory agreement between the theoretical values predicted from the formulas and the values actually observed. These results suggest the utility of the true-score model used in deriving the formulas.This work was supported by contract Nonr-2752(00) between the Office of Naval Research and Educational Testing Service. School psychologists and elementary school teachers were shown videotapes of a psychologist consulting with a teacher, with the psychologist using either behavioral or mental health consultation techniques. Problem situations and teacher-consultee verbalizations did not differ across the two sets of videotapes. Afterwards, subjects judged the effectiveness of of the consultation and the personal attributes of the consulting parties. In general, teachers preferred behavioral consultation, while psychologists rated the mental health consultation as more effective. Two studies compared hemispatial bias for perceiving chimeric faces in patients having either atypical or typical depression and healthy controls. A total of 245 patients having major depressive disorder (MDD) or dysthymia (164 with atypical features) and 115 controls were tested on the Chimeric Faces Test. Atypical depression differed from typical depression and controls in showing abnormally large right hemisphere bias. This was present in patients having either MDD or dysthymia and was not related to anxiety, physical anhedonia, or vegetative symptoms. In contrast, patients having MDD with melancholia showed essentially no right hemisphere bias. This is further evidence that atypical depression is a biologically distinct subtype and underscores the importance of this diagnostic distinction for neurophysiologic studies. 相似文献

Under certain assumptions an expression, in terms of item difficulties and intercorrelations, is derived for the curvilinear correlation of test score on the ability underlying the test, this ability being defined as the common factor of the item tetrachoric intercorrelations corrected for guessing. It is shown that this curvilinear correlation is equal to the square root of the test reliability. Numerical values for these curvilinear correlations are presented for a number of hypothetical tests, defined in terms of their item parameters. These numerical results indicate that the reliability and the curvilinear correlation will be maximized by (1) minimizing the variability of item difficulty and (2) making the level of item difficulty somewhat easier than the halfway point between a chance percentage of correct answers and 100 per cent correct answers. 相似文献
