Research into insomnia has relied almost exclusively upon subjects self-reports of sleep onset latency. The unreliability of self-reports have been repeatedly criticized yet despite the implementation of suggested changes substantial weaknesses remain. This study of 17 insomniacs outlines the development of a simple electrochemical device designed to yield objective estimates of sleep onset latency and compares this with independent estimates made by patients and their partners. Counselling methods involving progressive relaxation and hypnosis are sometimes regarded as being mysterious and alarmingly innovatory, particularly within the context of the secondary-school system. This study aimed to determine whether individual oral reading adaptation task performances are sufficiently reliable to be used as predictive indicators of improvement in stuttering behavior by testing the stability of individual stutterers' adaptation scores. Results demonstrated that all stutterers are not stable in their individual adaptation scores and therefore individual adaptation scores may be insufficiently reliable for predicting and classifying. Men and women aged between 25 and 75 were asked to associate personal experiences to a set of 50 randomly chosen common words. The dates of these experiences were reconstructed and plotted as frequency distributions. Neither sex differences nor introversion--extraversion had reliable effects, and response latencies did not differ between conditions, but age differences significantly affected the memory distributions. Contrary to the hypothesis that ageing produces a selective deficit for recency, it appears that the average date of remembered events tends to increase with age. 相似文献

Previous research has shown that preexposure to inescapable shock interferes with subsequent acquisition of escape responding, while pretraining with escapable shock facilitates subsequent acquisition of a different escape response. It has also been demonstrated that interference and facilitation persist when the aversive event is changed between the two phases of training. The present experiment extended these findings, showing generalized learning from an appetitive to an aversive situation. Six groups of rats received the following treatment in the presence of discriminative stimuli: One group was trained to nose press for food, a second to chain pull for food, and a third to chain pull to escape or avoid shock. Two groups received either signalled free food or inescapable shock, and a naive control group received no pretreatment. All groups were then tested in a nose-press escape-avoidance situation. The three groups with prior response training acquired responding most rapidly, and at the same rate. The naive controls acquired responding slowly, and the two groups with response-independent histories did not acquire responding during the 5 days of training. It was concluded that rats learn the relationship between responding and environmental events and that such learning strongly influences subsequent learning. 相似文献

The temporal relations among word-list items exert a powerful influence on episodic memory retrieval. Two experiments were conducted with younger and older adults in which the age-related recall deficit was examined by using a decomposition method to the serial position curve, partitioning performance into (a) the probability of first recall, illustrating the recency effect, and (b) the conditional response probability, illustrating the lag recency effect (M. W. Howard & M. J. Kahana, 1999). Although the older adults initiated recall in the same manner in both immediate and delayed free recall, temporal proximity of study items (contiguity) exerted a much weaker influence on recall transitions in older adults. Two experiments tested the prediction based on the source monitoring framework that imagination is most likely to lead to false memories when related perceived events have occurred. Consistent with this, people were more likely to falsely remember seeing events when the events had been both imagined as seen and actually heard than when they were just heard, just visually imagined, or imagined both visually and auditorily. Furthermore, when people considered potential sources for memories or more carefully evaluated features of remembered events, source errors were reduced. On average, misattributed ("false") memories differed in phenomenal qualities from true memories. Taken together, these findings show that as different qualities of mental experience flexibly enter into source attributions, qualities derived from related perceptual events are particularly likely to lead to false claims that imagined events were seen, even when the event involves a primary modality (auditory) different from the target event (visual). 相似文献
