In various research fields, biomarkers are now widely used as tools for assessing individual integrity. The recent advances
in quantification methods for behavioral patterns, such as computerized video-tracking procedures, make them valuable biomarkers.
However, the corollary of these novelties is that they remain relatively unknown and unused. In this study, we show that such
tools can assess the validity of research methods, such as individual recognition. To demonstrate this, we employed, as a
model, a marking method (passive integrated transponder [PIT] tagging) widely used in amphibians. Detailed visual observations
and video-tracking methods were complementary in highlighting components at different behavioral scales: locomotion, feeding,
and breeding. We illustrate the scientific and ethical adequacy of the targeted marking method but also suggest that more
studies should integrate behavioral analyses. Such biomarkers are a powerful tool for assessing conservation concerns when

In a new integration, we show that the visual-spatial structuring of time converges with auditory-spatial left-right judgments for time-related words. In Experiment 1, participants placed past and future-related words respectively to the left and right of the midpoint on a horizontal line, reproducing earlier findings. In Experiment 2, neutral and time-related words were presented over headphones. Participants were asked to indicate whether words were louder on the left or right channel. On critical experimental trials, words were presented equally loud binaurally. As predicted, participants judged future words to be louder on the right channel more often than past-related words. Furthermore, there was a significant cross-modal overlap between the visual-spatial ordering (Experiment 1) and the auditory judgments (Experiment 2), which were continuously related. These findings provide support for the assumption that space and time have certain invariant properties that share a common structure across modalities. 相似文献

Prospective memory (PM) is the ability to remember to perform an action at a specific point in the future. Regarded as multidimensional, PM involves several cognitive functions that are known to be impaired in normal ageing. In the present study we set out to investigate the cognitive correlates of PM impairment in normal ageing. Manipulating cognitive load, we assessed event- and time-based PM, as well as several cognitive functions, including executive functions, working memory, and retrospective episodic memory, in healthy participants covering the entire adulthood. We found that normal ageing was characterised by PM decline in all conditions and that event-based PM was more sensitive to the effects of ageing than time-based PM. Whatever the conditions, PM was linked to inhibition and processing speed. However, while event-based PM was mainly mediated by binding and retrospective memory processes, time-based PM was mainly related to inhibition. The only distinction between high- and low-load PM cognitive correlates lies in an additional, but marginal, correlation between updating and the high-load PM condition. The association of distinct cognitive functions, as well as shared mechanisms with event- and time-based PM, confirm that each type of PM relies on a different set of processes. 相似文献

The ability of recruiters and laypersons (students) to detect applicant personality traits and deception was studied. Participants viewed mock videotapes of target applicants answering interview questions. They subsequently judged the applicants' personality on the Big Five dimensions. Then, they viewed another videotape with other applicants presenting themselves either truthfully or not, and subsequently guessed which version was truthful. Personality judgments were compared with targets' self‐assessments and peer assessments to create an accuracy score. Both recruiters and students accurately detected applicants' global personality profile. Recruiters were better at this than students. However, students were better at judging the specific traits of openness, extraversion, and conscientiousness, whereas recruiters only accurately detected openness. The present study investigates whether updating an important function of executive control can be driven by unconscious reward cues. Participants had to memorize several numbers and update those numbers independently according to a sequence of arithmetic operations. At the beginning of each trial, a reward (1 euro or 5 cents) was presented, either subliminally or supraliminally. Participants could earn the reward if they found the correct response on the updating task. Results showed better performance when a high (conscious or unconscious) reward was at stake compared to a low reward. This suggests that subliminal information can influence a component process of executive control traditionally thought to require consciousness. 相似文献

In this paper, the statistical significance of the contribution of variables to the principal components in principal components
analysis (PCA) is assessed nonparametrically by the use of permutation tests. We compare a new strategy to a strategy used
in previous research consisting of permuting the columns (variables) of a data matrix independently and concurrently, thus
destroying the entire correlational structure of the data. This strategy is considered appropriate for assessing the significance
of the PCA solution as a whole, but is not suitable for assessing the significance of the contribution of single variables.
Alternatively, we propose a strategy involving permutation of one variable at a time, while keeping the other variables fixed.
We compare the two approaches in a simulation study, considering proportions of Type I and Type II error. We use two corrections
for multiple testing: the Bonferroni correction and controlling the False Discovery Rate (FDR). To assess the significance
of the variance accounted for by the variables, permuting one variable at a time, combined with FDR correction, yields the
most favorable results. This optimal strategy is applied to an empirical data set, and results are compared with bootstrap

Background. Prior knowledge activation facilitates learning. Note taking during prior knowledge activation (i.e., note taking directed at retrieving information from memory) might facilitate the activation process by enabling learners to build an external representation of their prior knowledge. However, taking notes might be less effective in supporting prior knowledge activation if available prior knowledge is limited. Aims. This study investigates the effects of the retrieval‐directed function of note taking depending on learners' level of prior knowledge. It is hypothesized that the effectiveness of note taking is influenced by the amount of prior knowledge learners already possess. Sample. Sixty‐one high school students participated in this study. A prior knowledge test was used to ascertain differences in level of prior knowledge and assign participants to a low or a high prior knowledge group. Method. A 2×2 factorial design was used to investigate the effects of note taking during prior knowledge activation (yes, no) depending on learners' level of prior knowledge (low, high) on mental effort, performance, and mental efficiency. Results. Note taking during prior knowledge activation lowered mental effort and increased mental efficiency for high prior knowledge learners. For low prior knowledge learners, note taking had the opposite effect on mental effort and mental efficiency. Conclusions. The effects of the retrieval‐directed function of note taking are influenced by learners' level of prior knowledge. Learners with high prior knowledge benefit from taking notes while activating prior knowledge, whereas note taking has no beneficial effects for learners with limited prior knowledge. 相似文献

This study investigated the Gestalt law of closure in baboons. Using a computer-controlled self-testing procedure, we trained baboons (Papio papio) to discriminate open versus closed shapes presented on a touch screen with a two-alternative forced choice procedure. Ten baboons (OPEN + group) were trained with the open shapes serving as the positive stimulus (S+), and nine others (CLOSE + group) were trained with the closed shape serving as S+. The OPEN + group obtained higher discrimination performance than the CLOSE + group (Exp 1), but its scores declined when new line segments were added to the stimuli (Exp 2) and after smoothing the end points of the open shapes (Exp 3). The CLOSE + group was less affected by the above manipulations of local stimulus dimension, but its performance was disrupted when the collinearity end points was reduced (Exp 3). Use of a visual search task revealed that the search for an open shape among closed distractors was less attention demanding in baboons than the search for a closed shape among open ones (Exp 4). It is concluded that (1) end lines rather than closeness per se are perceptual primitives for the open versus closed discrimination in baboons, and (2) the relative emphasis on local or configural cues when processing contour closure depends on experiential factors in baboons and is thus subject to interindividual variations. 相似文献

The current studies aimed to examine how either or not being hungry (hot vs. cold state) affects uninformed (i.e. without specific instructions) coping planning for maintaining goal-directed behaviour in weight loss attempts. We hypothesised that being hungry is beneficial both for (1) increasing awareness of potentially challenging situations and for (2) planning how to cope with these situations. The first hypothesis was supported, whereas the second was not, as it was found that satiated participants constructed better quality coping plans than hungry participants. It appears that awareness of potentially challenging situations when hungry does not necessarily translate into better coping planning. Although coping planning appears to be a promising strategy for maintaining goal-directed behaviour, future research should focus on visceral states to improve its use. 相似文献
