Is overt stuttered speech a prerequisite for the neural activations associated with chronic developmental stuttering? 总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Four adult right-handed chronic stutterers and four age-matched controls completed H(2)(15)O PET scans involving overt and imagined oral reading tasks. During overt stuttered speech prominent activations occurred in SMA (medial), BA 46 (right), anterior insula (bilateral), and cerebellum (bilateral) plus deactivations in right A2 (BA 21/22). These activations and deactivations also occurred when the same stutterers imagined they were stuttering. Some parietal regions were significantly activated during imagined stuttering, but not during overt stuttering. Most regional activations changed in the same direction when overt stuttering ceased (during chorus reading) and when subjects imagined that they were not stuttering (also during chorus reading). Controls displayed fewer similarities between regional activations and deactivations during actual and imagined oral reading. Thus overt stuttering appears not to be a prerequisite for the prominent regional activations and deactivations associated with stuttering. 相似文献

We investigated how naively produced prosody affects listeners' end interpretations of ambiguous utterances. Non-professional
speakers who were unaware of any ambiguity produced ambiguous sentences couched in short, unambiguous passages. In a forced-choice
task, listeners could not tell which context the isolated ambiguous sentences came from (Exp. 1). However, listeners were
able to correctly paraphrase the least ambiguous subset of these utterances, showing that prosody can be used to resolve ambiguity
(Exp. 2). Nonetheless, in everyday language use, both prosody and context are available to interpret speech. When the least
ambiguous sentences were cross-spliced into contexts biasing towards their original interpretations or into contexts biasing
towards their alternative interpretations, answers to content questions about the ambiguous sentence, confidence ratings,
and ratings of naturalness all indicated that prosody is ignored when context is available (Exp. 3). Although listeners can
use prosody to interpret ambiguous sentences, they generally do not, and this makes sense in light of the frequent lack of
reliable prosodic cues in everyday speech.

The objective of this exploratory one-group pretest-posttest study was to evaluate the nature of psychological change in inward depressed psychiatric patients attending multi-disciplinary treatment, including physical activity, designed to improve mental well-being. Female depressed psychiatric patients (n?=?51) were examined before and after this programme over a period of 3 months. The following psychological parameters were assessed: depression, anxiety, global self-esteem, and physical self-perceptions. Depressed patients demonstrated statistically significant improvements in depression, anxiety, global self-esteem and physical self-worth (t(50) ranging from -3.76 to 4.65, all p?0.007; ES ranging from 0.53 to -0.65). Changes in depression and anxiety displayed a strong negative correlation with changes in global self-esteem, and those changes are independent of the initial severity of the depressive symptoms (?F(2,48) ranging from 0.03 to 0.70, n.s.). Patients with greater improvement in physical self-perceptions reported greater improvement anxious symptoms then patients who did not improve. Consequently, within the limitations of the research design it can be concluded that the programme appeared successful in improving psychological well-being in female depressed patients. Relations between brain electrical activity and performance on two cognitive tasks were examined in a normal population selected to be high on self-reported measures of Positive or Negative Affectivity. Twenty-five right-handed women, from an original pool of 308 college undergraduates, were the participants. EEG was recorded during baseline and during psychometrically matched spatial and verbal tasks. As predicted, participants who were high in Positive Affectivity performed equally well on the verbal and spatial tasks, while participants who were high in Negative Affectivity had spatial scores that were lower than their verbal scores. There were no group differences in baseline EEG. Both groups exhibited left central activation (i.e., alpha suppression) during the verbal and spatial tasks. When EEG data were analyzed separately for the group high in Positive Affectivity, there was evidence of parietal activation for the spatial task relative to the verbal task. The EEG data for the group high in Negative Affectivity had comparable EEG power values during verbal and spatial tasks at parietal scalp locations. These data suggest that, within a selected normal population, differences in affective style may interact with cognitive performance and with the brain electrical activity associated with that performance. 相似文献

Not letting the left leg know what the right leg is doing: limb-specific locomotor adaptation to sensory-cue conflict 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We investigated the phenomenon of limb-specific locomotor adaptation in order to adjudicate between sensory-cue-conflict theory and motor-adaptation theory. The results were consistent with cue-conflict theory in demonstrating that two different leg-specific hopping aftereffects are modulated by the presence of conflicting estimates of self-motion from visual and nonvisual sources. Experiment 1 shows that leg-specific increases in forward drift during attempts to hop in place on one leg while blindfolded vary according to the relationship between visual information and motor activity during an adaptation to outdoor forward hopping. Experiment 2 shows that leg-specific changes in performance on a blindfolded hopping-to-target task are similarly modulated by the presence of cue conflict during adaptation to hopping on a treadmill. Experiment 3 shows that leg-specific aftereffects from hopping additionally produce inadvertent turning during running in place while blindfolded. The results of these experiments suggest that these leg-specific locomotor aftereffects are produced by sensory-cue conflict rather than simple motor adaptation. 相似文献

Event-related potentials (ERPs) were utilized to study brain activity while subjects listened to speech and nonspeech stimuli. The effect of duplex perception was exploited, in which listeners perceive formant transitions that are isolated as nonspeech "chirps," but perceive formant transitions that are embedded in synthetic syllables as unique linguistic events with no chirp-like sounds heard at all (Mattingly et al., 1971). Brain ERPs were recorded while subjects listened to and silently identified plain speech-only tokens, duplex tokens, and tone glides (perceived as "chirps" by listeners). A highly controlled set of stimuli was developed that represented equivalent speech and nonspeech stimulus tokens such that the differences were limited to a single acoustic parameter: amplitude. The acoustic elements were matched in terms of number and frequency of components. Results indicated that the neural activity in response to the stimuli was different for different stimulus types. Duplex tokens had significantly longer latencies than the pure speech tokens. The data are consistent with the contention of separate modules for phonetic and auditory stimuli. 相似文献

We investigated the impact of emotions on learning vocabulary in an unfamiliar language to better understand affective influences in foreign language acquisition. Seventy native English speakers learned new vocabulary in either a negative or a neutral emotional state. Participants also completed two sets of working memory tasks to examine the potential mediating role of working memory. Results revealed that participants exposed to negative stimuli exhibited difficulty in retrieving and correctly pairing English words with Indonesian words, as reflected in a lower performance on the prompted recall tests and the free recall measure. Emotional induction did not change working memory scores from pre to post manipulation. This suggests working memory could not explain the reduced vocabulary learning in the negative group. We argue that negative mood can adversely affect language learning by suppressing aspects of native-language processing and impeding form-meaning mapping with second language words. 相似文献
