The actor's behavioral (High or Low) and role (High, Medium, or Low) respectability were varied in an actor-observer attribution study. A scenario described the actor's background combination of behavioral and role respectability and an event in which the actor participated. Subjects assigned actor and situational responsibilities to the event from their own viewpoint and from their perceptions of the actor's viewpoint. This project employs an experimental design to test theoretical predictions regarding how numeracy can assist jurors in determining damage awards to compensate a plaintiff for pain and suffering and how the use of meaningful numerical anchors may produce similar benefits. Mock jurors (N = 345) reviewed a legal case and were asked to give a dollar award to compensate the plaintiff for pain and suffering. The presence and nature of a numerical anchor and the duration of pain and suffering were manipulated. Participants' numeracy was measured. Results provided support for predictions. Jurors higher in numeracy gave awards that more appropriately reflected the duration of pain and suffering and showed less variability in awards. Similar benefits were obtained by exposing jurors to meaningful numerical anchors to help them contextualize dollar amounts. Thus, introducing meaningful anchors to jurors may provide similar benefits to numeracy, without the drawbacks associated with selecting only numerate jurors. 相似文献

It is widely assumed that symmetry is an important visual primitive, probably encoded without the need for attention. Julesz’s (1981) definition ofeffortless perception, which states that any stimulus property perceived for exposure durations of 160 msec or less is detected preattentively, contributed greatly to this belief.Single pattern studies confirm that symmetry is detected within this limit. In the present study, however, Julesz’s operationalization is compared with themultiple pattern visual search task, to see whether symmetry as a wholistic property is detected in parallel. The results show that symmetry detection times are highly dependent on the number of distractor patterns. The findings are similar for dot patterns, wire polygons, solid block shapes, and simple parentheses. We conclude that symmetry detection per se requires selective attention, but that some related grouping or segmentation mechanism may operate preattentively. 相似文献

Single nucleotide polymorphism microarrays have the ability to reveal parental consanguinity which may or may not be known to healthcare providers. Consanguinity can have significant implications for the health of patients and for individual and family psychosocial well-being. These results often present ethical and legal dilemmas that can have important ramifications. Unexpected consanguinity can be confounding to healthcare professionals who may be unprepared to handle these results or to communicate them to families or other appropriate representatives. There are few published accounts of experiences with consanguinity and SNP arrays. In this paper we discuss three cases where molecular evidence of parental incest was identified by SNP microarray. We hope to further highlight consanguinity as a potential incidental finding, how the cases were handled by the clinical team, and what resources were found to be most helpful. This paper aims to contribute further to professional discourse on incidental findings with genomic technology and how they were addressed clinically. These experiences may provide some guidance on how others can prepare for these findings and help improve practice. As genetic and genomic testing is utilized more by non-genetics providers, we also hope to inform about the importance of engaging with geneticists and genetic counselors when addressing these findings. 相似文献

What, if anything, is cognitive architecture and how is it implemented in neural architecture? Focusing on perceptual organization,
this question is addressed by way of a pluralist approach which, supported by metatheoretical considerations, combines complementary
insights from representational, connectionist, and dynamic systems approaches to cognition. This pluralist approach starts
from a representationally inspired model which implements the intertwined but functionally distinguishable subprocesses of
feedforward feature encoding, horizontal feature binding, and recurrent feature selection. As sustained by a review of neuroscientific
evidence, these are the subprocesses that are believed to take place in the visual hierarchy in the brain. Furthermore, the
model employs a special form of processing, called transparallel processing, whose neural signature is proposed to be gamma-band
synchronization in transient horizontal neural assemblies. In neuroscience, such assemblies are believed to mediate binding
of similar features. Their formal counterparts in the model are special input-dependent distributed representations, called
hyperstrings, which allow many similar features to be processed in a transparallel fashion, that is, simultaneously as if
only one feature were concerned. This form of processing does justice to both the high combinatorial capacity and the high
speed of the perceptual organization process. A naturally following proposal is that those temporarily synchronized neural
assemblies are “gnosons”, that is, constituents of flexible self-organizing cognitive architecture in between the relatively
