A review of self-injurious behavior (SIB) indicates several biological variables that should be considered in future research. A current hypothesis, that SIB is reinforced by attention, receives support but inadequately accounts for evidence that SIB can arise in the absence of reinforcement, is often difficult to modify, and has features unlike those of conditioned behavior. Alternative possibilities are suggested. Neurological damage is common in populations displaying SIB and may produce inadequate pain perception or avoidance. Stereotyped behavior, also common in these populations, may also be related to SIB. Stress and isolation, both strongly correlated with SIB, may evoke this behavior by altering levels of biogenic amines and affecting the probability of aggressive responses. Finally, SIB may have been favored in evolution by group and kin selection, as the loss of a damaged individual may actually favor his genotype through promotion of relatives. These alternatives are not necessarily mutually incompatible nor do they preclude a degree of flexibility in SIB. This experiment assessed the proposal that performance differences associated with field independence/field articulation reflect differential efficiency in the use of a limited capacity information-processing system termed working memory. Extreme scores on a group-administered version of the embedded figures test were used to identify subjects “high” and “low” in degree of field articulation. The task required that a subject retain a series of digits for subsequent report while performing a semantic modification of a target phrase. Concurrent information load on working memory was varied in two ways: by increasing memory load from 3 to 6 digits, and by increasing the complexity of the semantic processing required. In low information load conditions no differences were found between high FA and low FA groups. In high information load conditions low FA subjects made more errors in digit recall and took longer to perform the difficult semantic modification. 相似文献

Wood gnawing is recorded by stylus transducer signals. An audio amplifier raises these signals to a suitable level for the operation of a threshold control unit. Signal detection theory (SDT) allows a bias-free measure of sensitivity, d′, to be simply estimated from discrimination data when certain conditions are met. The computation is not straightforward, however, in several popular discrimination designs, such as two- and four-interval same-different designs and the ABX design. Switching transients or “glitches” are frequently encountered in signal processing applications involving digital-to-analog (D/A) conversion. A low-cost “deglitching” circuit is described and implemented for the Digital Equipment Corporation AA50 D/A converter option on the PDP-8/e minicomputer. Switching transients were eliminated using a noninverting, unity-gain sample-and-hold circuit (employing Datei System’s SHM-IC-1). An automated multipurpose activity platform (MAP) that can be used to measure activity in the horizontal plane is described. Detection of the position of a small-bodied animal is based on completion of an electronic circuit in one or several cells of a 21 by 21 matrix below the floor. The MAP is constructed on the basis of an 11 by 11 matrix, but, through electronic averaging, operates functionally on the basis of a 21 by 21 matrix.
