Positive and negative social ties among older adults: Measurement models and the prediction of psychological distress and well-being 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5

The factor structure of positive and negative social ties was studied among 246 older adults who were either recently physically disabled, recently conjugally bereaved, or matched controls. Covariance structure analyses were carried out on a network measure to determine whether positive and negative social ties represent independent domains of social experience, and to assess the degree to which their structure is invariant across groups undergoing major loss transitions. Positive and negative social ties were found to be independent and there was substantial similarity in their factor structure across the three groups. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that, whereas positive social ties were related to psychological well-being, negative social ties were predictive of both psychological well-being and distress. These results demonstrate the importance of assessing both positive and negative ties in explaining the psychological adjustment of older adults. 相似文献

Forty-four emotionally disturbed children were administered the Matching Familiar Figures Test by one examiner after which the 13 most impulsive and 13 most reflective were chosen. A second examiner administered the Fixed Alternatives Question-Asking Game in whichSs sought information by asking questions that could be answered either yes or no. These questions were classified on a developmental basis; reflective children were found to employ more mature questions than did impulsive ones. The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children (STAIC) and the Children's Manifest Anxiety Scale (CMAS) were administered to 54 juvenile delinquents (27 males, 27 females). Ratings on locus of conflict were also obtained. The STAIC A-State scale was significantly correlated with internalization but not with externalization or the total maladjustment index. Neither A-Trait nor the anxiety portion of the CMAS was correlated with locus of conflict. All measures of anxiety were significantly correlated with each other. Boys were rated as more internal, external, and maladjusted than girls despite the fact that girls reported more subjectively experienced anxiety. 相似文献

The present study examined the utility of employing tests such as the PPVT and the AALIPS as viable alternatives to the WISC in the prediction of academic achievement with emotionally disturbed children. The three IQ instruments and the California Achievement Test were administered to a group of 50 male emotionally disturbed children. Intercorrelations among the three tests were all significant and all three successfully predicted academic achievement. However, both the PPVT and the AALIPS consistently resulted in higher IQ estimates than did the WISC. Statistical prediction of an outcome variable using multiple independent variables is a common practice in the social and
behavioral sciences. For example, neuropsychologists are sometimes called upon to provide predictions of preinjury cognitive
functioning for individuals who have suffered a traumatic brain injury. Typically, these predictions are made using standard
multiple linear regression models with several demographic variables (e.g., gender, ethnicity, education level) as predictors.
Prior research has shown conflicting evidence regarding the ability of such models to provide accurate predictions of outcome
variables such as full-scale intelligence (FSIQ) test scores. The present study had two goals: (1) to demonstrate the utility
of a set of alternative prediction methods that have been applied extensively in the natural sciences and business but have
not been frequently explored in the social sciences and (2) to develop models that can be used to predict premorbid cognitive
functioning in preschool children. Predictions of Stanford–Binet 5 FSIQ scores for preschool-aged children is used to compare
the performance of a multiple regression model with several of these alternative methods. Results demonstrate that classification
and regression treesprovided more accurate predictions of FSIQ scores than does the more traditional regression approach.

Recently, Finch et al. (Journal of Personality, 1999) reported the results of a meta-analysis in which social negativity was demonstrated to be positively related to psychological distress. In the present investigation, we employed meta-analytic techniques to test competing hypotheses as to whether age amplifies or dampens the relation of social negativity and psychological distress. A total of 104 effect sizes (e.g., concurrent correlations between self-report measures of social negativity and psychological distress) from 53 independent samples were extracted from 46 journal articles. Contrary to hypotheses, the relation between social negativity and psychological distress was not significantly different for samples of older (60 + years) and younger (<60 years) adults. An explanation was provided for why the present meta-analysis and previous narrative reviews have resulted in discrepant conclusions about negativity effects. 相似文献

In order to investigate the dimensionality of the Adult Nowicki-Strickland Locus of Control Scale (ANS-IE), the responses of 120 undergraduate psychology majors were subjected to one principal components factor analysis using Kaiser's varimax criterion, Five meaningful factors emerged which accounted or 80.6% of the total variance. Results were discussed in terms of their similarity to other factor analyses using the children's version of this scale and to a factor analysis of the ANS-IE (chandler & Dugovics, 1977) which used a modified response format. 相似文献
