The ability of younger and older observers to perceive surface slant was investigated in four experiments. The surfaces possessed slants of 20°, 35°, 50°, and 65°, relative to the frontoparallel plane. The observers judged the slants using either a palm board (Experiments 1, 3, and 4) or magnitude estimation (Experiment 2). In Experiments 1–3, physically slanted surfaces were used (the surfaces possessed marble, granite, pebble, and circle textures), whereas computer-generated 3-D surfaces (defined by motion parallax and binocular disparity) were utilized in Experiment 4. The results showed that the younger and older observers' performance was essentially identical with regard to accuracy. The younger and older age groups, however, differed in terms of precision in Experiments 1 and 2: The judgments of the older observers were more variable across repeated trials. When taken as a whole, the results demonstrate that older observers (at least through the age of 83 years) can effectively extract information about slant in depth from optical patterns containing texture, motion parallax, or binocular disparity.  相似文献

Evidence-based psychosocial family interventions enhancing empathy and empowerment are particularly beneficial to families of children who have developmental disabilities. This study assessed the effectiveness of an intervention called the Nurturing Program for Parents and Their Children with Special Needs and Health Challenges (SNHC). Eighty-seven families were enrolled and randomly assigned to a control or treatment group. Forty-six families in the control group received individualized case management (CM) services and forty-one families in the treatment group were assigned to 12 sessions of the SNHC curriculum along with case management services. Before and after the intervention, participants in both conditions completed the Adult and Adolescent Parenting Index-2 assessing parents’ attitudes toward child rearing and the Family Empowerment Scale (FES) measuring family empowerment. Caregivers in the intervention condition improved in empathy towards children’s needs, F(1, 54)?=?4.52, p?=?.04; and all families, both control group and treatment group, improved their attitudes towards the use of corporal punishment by posttest, F(1, 54)?=?6.56, p?=?.013. Also, all caregivers increased in their empowerment over the course of the intervention, F(1, 50)?=?13.28, p?=?.001. Attrition, 22–26% among CM and 51–56% among SNHC+CM, limited generalizability as did participants not completing all SNHC sessions. Despite these limitations, findings suggest that early interventions catering to families of children with developmental disabilities have a positive impact on parenting. To varying degrees, both conditions provided caregivers with tools that positively affected the quality of the parent–child relationships and promoted empowerment.  相似文献

A single identified neuron, the medial type B photoreceptor, was isolated by axotomy from the nervous systems of nudibranch molluscs (Hermissenda) which had been exposed to three different training experiences. Paired animals had been trained with repeated paired presentations of light and rotation and random animals with randomized light and rotation; naive animals had no training. A two-microelectrode voltage clamp of axotomized type B somata (separated from all synaptic interactions and impulse activity) was used to measure, with a blind procedure, three distinct ionic currents at least 24 h after the training experience. An early K+ current, IA, and a Ca2+-dependent K+ current, ICa2+-K+, but not a light-induced inward Na+ current, were significantly reduced for the paired as compared to the random and naive animals. The magnitude of ICa2+-K+ reduction was related (again measured blindly) to the degree of training-induced suppression of phototaxis (a measure of the learned behavior) for the paired animals. These data are consistent with previous observations indicating that changes of intrinsic type B membrane properties are an important means for encoding the acquisition and retention of Hermissenda associative learning.  相似文献

Hermissenda crassicornis shows both short- and long-term retention of conditioning following light-rotation pairings. Previous research has shown that prolonged training (50 trials per session, three consecutive daily sessions) produces a suppression of phototaxis lasting for days. This long-term retention reflects associative learning processes, with little or no contribution of nonassociative learning. In contrast, both associative learning and nonassociative behavioral modification contribute to short-term retention following a single session of five pairing trials. In this paper, we describe important associative and nonassociative determinants of short-term changes in phototaxis. In Experiment 1, animals received successive hourly tests for phototaxis in either a horizontal or a vertical orientation. Repeated testing resulted in decreased phototaxis which was especially pronounced for animals tested horizontally. Experiments 2-4 demonstrated that both repeated handling of animals and repeated periods of dark adaptation prior to each phototaxic test contributed to the development of phototaxic suppression with repeated testing. These nonassociative influences on phototaxis interacted with the gravitational orientation employed during behavioral testing, being most pronounced for testing in the horizontal orientation. An implication of these findings is that attempts to demonstrate short-term pairing-specific suppression will be most successful when nonassociative contributions are minimized (by testing animals vertically). Experiment 5 tested this prediction. We also tested the influence of training light intensity and the stimulus specificity of conditioned suppression. Animals received either five paired or five random presentations of light and rotation. Training light intensity was either moderate or bright. Following training, animals were tested for either suppression of phototaxis or suppression of negative geotaxis, using either a horizontal or a vertical testing orientation. Consistent with previous results, horizontally tested animals exhibited pronounced nonassociative suppression following training. The use of a bright training light also produced nonassociative suppression. However, when trained with a light of moderate intensity and tested vertically, Hermissenda showed associative suppression of phototaxis (significant paired--random difference) but not geotaxis (no paired--random difference). In a final experiment we observed that the longer the period of dark adaptation (prior to testing) the longer the phototaxic latency.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献

The joint effects of punishment and reinforcement on the pigeon's key-peck response were examined in three choice experiments conducted to compare predictions of Farley and Fantino's (1978) subtractive model with those made by Deluty's (1976) and Deluty and Church's (1978) model of punishment. In Experiment 1, the addition of equal punishment schedules to both alternatives of a concurrent reinforcement schedule enhanced the preference exhibited for the more frequent reinforcement alternative. Experiment 2 demonstrated decreases in the absolute response rate for each member of a concurrent reinforcement schedule when increasing frequencies of punishment were added to each alternative. Experiment 3 found that preference for the denser of two reinforcement schedules diminished when the absolute frequencies of reinforcement were increased by a constant factor and conditions of punishment for both alternatives were held constant. Diminished preferences were obtained regardless of whether the frequency of punishment associated with the denser reinforcement schedule was greater or less than that associated with the lean reinforcement alternative. The results from all three experiments uniquely supported Farley and Fantino's (1978) subtractive model of punishment and reinforcement.  相似文献

In a concurrent-chains procedure, pigeons chose between outcomes that differed in the rate of response-independent delivery of food and electric shocks. The application of functional measurement techniques confirmed the matching relation—between choice and rate of reinforcement value—for two of three pigeons. Scale values of the outcomes were extracted for the two birds that conformed to matching, and the value of a single occurrence of shock per minute—in terms of negative food units—was estimated. A second experiment with concurrent chains provided a test of these parameter estimates. The close correspondence between predicted and obtained choice behavior found in Experiment II indicated that the estimates of outcome value were indeed reliable. Both experiments together support the contention that the effects on choice behavior of positive and aversive stimuli appear to be equal, though opposite in sign.  相似文献

In two experiments, we evaluated the ability of human observers to make use of second-order temporal relations across three or more views of an apparent motion sequence for the perceptual analysis of three-dimensional form. Ratings of perceived rigidity were obtained in Experiment 1 for objects rotating in depth that were simultaneously subjected to sinusoidal affine stretching transformations along the line of sight or in a direction parallel to the image plane. Such transformations are theoretically interesting because they cannot be detected by analyses that are restricted to first-order temporal relations (i.e., two views), but they can be detected by more conventional analyses of structure from motion in which second-order temporal relations over three or more views are used. The current results show that human observers can perceive stretching transformations of a rotating 3-D object in a direction parallel to the image plane but that they fail to perceive stretching transformations along the line of sight. This result suggests that human observers can make use of some limited second-order temporal information. This finding was confirmed in Experiment 2, in which we investigated the effects of several specific optical consequences of sinusoidal stretching transformations applied in different directions. The results indicate that observers may be sensitive to the sign of acceleration, but that. they cannot make use of the precise magnitude of second-order relations necessary to recover euclidean metric structure.  相似文献

The expansion of infant mental health (IMH) to at‐risk preschoolers and their families has contributed to the integration of relational play therapy (RPT) into IMH treatment services for this population. Integrating RPT allows access to specialized play and expressive techniques specific to preschool and family development, which improves the clinical ability to meet the multiple and complex needs of at‐risk parent–child dyads and their families. This article will examine the RPT literature and explore the similarities and differences between IMH and RPT. In addition, two case studies will highlight a five‐phase, integrative clinical‐treatment process and provide insight into how IMH clinicians are integrating RPT models and maintaining adherence to the IMH treatment approach.  相似文献
