Family‐Based Preventive Interventions: Can the Onset of Suicidal Ideation and Behavior Be Prevented?

Suicide is the second leading cause of death for youth aged 10–24. Research informed prevention efforts have the opportunity to decrease risk for suicidal ideation and behavior before it is manifested. Indeed, there is a small body of research findings demonstrating both proximal and distal effects of preventive interventions delivered in childhood and adolescence on suicidal ideation and/or behavior. These efforts build off of other secondary analyses of prevention research that has demonstrated benefits for multiple types of youth outcomes. This supplement provides “proof of concept” that family‐based preventive interventions aimed at reducing a number of risk factors for suicide (e.g., substance use, externalizing, and internalizing behavior) can prevent suicidal ideation and behaviors.

FEMINISM AS A CORRELATE OF SELF-ESTEEM, SELF-ACCEPTANCE, AND SOCIAL SUPPORT AMONG LESBIANS

In this study it was hypothesized that, among lesbians, agreement with feminist ideology and participation in feminist activities would correlate positively with self-esteem, self-acceptance, and social support. Demographic variables were also examined as correlates. Respondents were contacted through 11 lesbian, gay, and feminist organizations and establishments and asked to complete a research questionnaire. Onehundred-twenty-three usable questionnaires were returned. Age and current involvement in a lesbian relationship were significantly related to self-esteem, self-acceptance, and social support. Participation in feminist activities also correlated with self-acceptance. The results give tentative, but important, information useful in understanding the correlates of self-esteem and support among lesbians.     

A selected review of the literature and an empirical analysis of drug treatment compliance by schizophrenic patients

One of the significant issues in the treatment of schizophrenic patients is their nonadherence to medication. While maintenance without medication may be possible for a minority of this group (Gardos and Cole, 1976; Cheung, 1981), most authorities believe that drug therapy should be continued indefinitely, particularly in view of the substantial risk of relapse when medication is discontinued (Prien and Klett, 1972). Davis (1975) reported that the evidence for the efficacy of neuroleptics in preventing relapse was substantial.
