Can infants map meaning to newly segmented words? Statistical segmentation and word learning 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The present experiments investigated how the process of statistically segmenting words from fluent speech is linked to the process of mapping meanings to words. Seventeen-month-old infants first participated in a statistical word segmentation task, which was immediately followed by an object-label-learning task. Infants presented with labels that were words in the fluent speech used in the segmentation task were able to learn the object labels. However, infants presented with labels consisting of novel syllable sequences (nonwords; Experiment 1) or familiar sequences with low internal probabilities (part-words; Experiment 2) did not learn the labels. Thus, prior segmentation opportunities, but not mere frequency of exposure, facilitated infants' learning of object labels. This study investigated social attention impairments in autism (social orienting, joint attention, and attention to another's distress) and their relations to language ability. Three- to four-year-old children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD; n = 72), 3- to 4-year-old developmentally delayed children (n = 34), and 12- to 46-month-old typically developing children (n = 39), matched on mental age, were compared on measures of social orienting, joint attention, and attention to another's distress. Children with autism performed significantly worse than the comparison groups in all of these domains. Combined impairments in joint attention and social orienting were found to best distinguish young children with ASD from those without ASD. Structural equation modeling indicated that joint attention was the best predictor of concurrent language ability. Social orienting and attention to distress were indirectly related to language through their relations with joint attention. These results help to clarify the nature of social attention impairments in autism, offer clues to developmental mechanisms, and suggest targets for early intervention. 相似文献

The authors investigated the recognizability of recently studied word and nonword stimuli in relation to both experimentally controlled prior frequency of occurrence and, for words, normative frequency (assessed by counts of occurrences in printed English). The interaction between these variables was small and nonsignificant across all conditions of 2 experiments. Patterns of recognition measures in relation to controlled prior frequency, but not normative frequency, appeared interpretable in terms of response biases generated by long-term priming. Application of a global memory model and analyses of correlations among item categories yielded evidence for a lexicality dimension underlying normative-frequency effects and an implication that "word-frequency effects" on recognition are better termed lexicality effects. 相似文献

Three levels of association theory are distinguished: (a) empirical laws relating operationally definable units; (b) theoretical concepts of association, supported by converging lines of evidence; and (c) theories assimilating concepts of association into more elaborate structures. These levels correspond roughly to stages in the evolution of association theory from the mid-19th century to the present. Ebbinghaus's major contribution as a theorist was to accomplish the transition from the first level to the second. The analysis of serial learning in terms of his conception of multiple types of associations may prove to have greater generality than has yet been realized. Social motivation—the psychobiological predisposition for social orienting, seeking social contact, and maintaining social interaction—manifests in early infancy and is hypothesized to be foundational for social communication development in typical and atypical populations. However, the lack of infant social-motivation measures has hindered delineation of associations between infant social motivation, other early-arising social abilities such as joint attention, and language outcomes. To investigate how infant social motivation contributes to joint attention and language, this study utilizes a mixed longitudinal sample of 741 infants at high (HL = 515) and low (LL = 226) likelihood for ASD. Using moderated nonlinear factor analysis (MNLFA), we incorporated items from parent-report measures to establish a novel latent factor model of infant social motivation that exhibits measurement invariance by age, sex, and familial ASD likelihood. We then examined developmental associations between 6- and 12-month social motivation, joint attention at 12–15 months, and language at 24 months of age. On average, greater social-motivation growth from 6–12 months was associated with greater initiating joint attention (IJA) and trend-level increases in sophistication of responding to joint attention (RJA). IJA and RJA were both positively associated with 24-month language abilities. There were no additional associations between social motivation and future language in our path model. These findings substantiate a novel, theoretically driven approach to modeling social motivation and suggest a developmental cascade through which social motivation impacts other foundational skills. These findings have implications for the timing and nature of intervention targets to support social communication development in infancy.
