Given the rise in dual-career and single-parent families, and the need for monitoring and supervision during out-of-school time, afterschool settings are becoming important contexts for the prevention of problem behaviors and the promotion of the positive development of youth. Research indicates that high-quality afterschool programs can have positive effects on children’s academic, socio-emotional, and behavioral outcomes. But less is known about how these influences occur and potential mechanisms involved in this nurturing and promotion process. This paper draws upon the current theoretical and empirical literature in school settings and beyond to examine ways in which afterschool settings can be leveraged as a potential nurturing environment. We apply the conceptualization of nurturing environments put forth by Biglan et al. (Am Psychol 67(4):257–271, 2012. doi: 10.1037/a0026796), which attends to the minimization of toxic social and biological conditions, reinforcement of diverse prosocial behaviors, limiting opportunities and influences for problem behavior, and promoting psychological flexibility in the pursuit of one’s values and goals. This paper concludes by identifying potential future research directions and practice implications regarding afterschool settings as nurturing environments for all youth. 相似文献

Depressed people perform poorly on cognitive tasks. It is unclear whether these deficits are due to decreased devotion of
task-related resources or to increased attention to non-task-related information. In the present study, we examined the degree
to which depressed and healthy adults displayed pupillary motility that varied at the frequency of presented stimuli on a
cognitive task, which we interpreted as task-related processing, and at other frequencies, which we interpreted as reflecting
intrinsic processing. Depressed participants made more consecutive errors than did controls. More pupillary motility at other
frequencies was associated with poorer performance, whereas more pupillary motility at the frequency of presented stimuli
was associated with better performance. Depressed participants had more pupillary motility at other frequencies, which partially
mediated observed deficits in cognitive performance. These findings support the hypothesis that allocating cognitive resources
to intrinsic processing contributes to observed cognitive deficits in depression. 相似文献

Social groups of gorillas were observed in three captive facilities and one African field site. Cases of potential gesture
use, totalling 9,540, were filtered by strict criteria for intentionality, giving a corpus of 5,250 instances of intentional
gesture use. This indicated a repertoire of 102 gesture types. Most repertoire differences between individuals and sites were
explicable as a consequence of environmental affordances and sampling effects: overall gesture frequency was a good predictor
of universality of occurrence. Only one gesture was idiosyncratic to a single individual, and was given only to humans. Indications
of cultural learning were few, though not absent. Six gestures appeared to be traditions within single social groups, but
overall concordance in repertoires was almost as high between as within social groups. No support was found for the ontogenetic
ritualization hypothesis as the chief means of acquisition of gestures. Many gestures whose form ruled out such an origin,
i.e. gestures derived from species-typical displays, were used as intentionally and almost as flexibly as gestures whose form
was consistent with learning by ritualization. When using both classes of gesture, gorillas paid specific attention to the
attentional state of their audience. Thus, it would be unwarranted to divide ape gestural repertoires into ‘innate, species-typical,
inflexible reactions’ and ‘individually learned, intentional, flexible communication’. We conclude that gorilla gestural communication
is based on a species-typical repertoire, like those of most other mammalian species but very much larger. Gorilla gestures
are not, however, inflexible signals but are employed for intentional communication to specific individuals. 相似文献

Four experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of prior processing episodes on people's preference for categorizing objects at the basic level (e.g. dog) relative to their preference for categorizing at the superordinate (e.g. animal) and the subordinate (e.g. Dalmation) levels. The prior processing episode in Experiment 1 was designed to induce subjects to activate representations at the superordinate level, and those in the remaining experiments were designed to induce subjects to differentiate objects at the subordinate level. After the prior processing episodes, subjects performed either a free naming or a picture categorization task that required them to decide whether an illustrated object belonged to a specified category. Results showed that prior processing episodes modestly reduced the superiority of basic level to superordinate level and subordinate level in categorization but not in free naming. The results suggest that the basic-level advantage is subject to the effects of context, but the effects are not as strong as the context effects on other aspects of categorization behaviour (e.g. rating typicality of a category member). Hence, the preference for the basic level is a somewhat more stable, invariant aspect of conceptual representation. Possible determinations of this stability are discussed. 相似文献

Three studies involving 478 undergraduates examined the perceived importance of observable actions versus mental states in revealing the "true self"-the authentic and fundamental nature of a target person. Results suggest that when people have only limited information about a target, they believe that an action is more diagnostic of the individual's true self than the accompanying mental state. When participants have knowledge concerning chronic dispositional tendencies of the target, however, they judge that a chronic mental state is more diagnostic of the true self than a chronic action tendency. Considered together, the findings suggest that people conceptualize the true self as a relatively private entity but nevertheless believe that an action of a little-known person may be particularly informative about that individual. Perceived diagnosticity of the true self was partially mediated by inferences concerning the relative stability of actions versus states but not by inferences of volition. 相似文献

Using an ego-centered network approach, we examine across two studies whether and how injunctive network norms—behaviors that are approved by alters—are related to majority members’ decisions to participate in helping actions supporting migrants. We hypothesize that the more people perceive their personal social networks as positive toward humanitarian actions for migrants, the more they consider their opinions on migration issues as self-defining, and the more they are willing to mobilize in helping behaviors. With a name generator approach, we collected personal social network data among majority members of Belgian, mobilized volunteers (Study 1, N = 204) and Swiss, non-mobilized participants (Study 2, N = 247). Results demonstrate the impact of injunctive network norms in promoting and maintaining helping actions for migrants, and the role of self-defining attitudes. Overall, the results highlight the importance of injunctive norms within personal social networks for participation in intergroup helping behaviors. 相似文献

The authors' aim in this study was to consider the functional equivalence of internal imagery, external imagery, and action execution. Sixteen elite gymnasts imaged and performed a complex gymnastic vault. Ten performers imaged from an internal perspective, and 6 used an external perspective. Although the results revealed that the time to image the entire motor task did not significantly differ from the time required to physically perform it, irrespective of the imagery perspective used, the temporal organization of the action was different within the imagery conditions than it was in the physical condition. The results do not provide support for the principle of temporal functional equivalence. The authors discuss the results in light of recent findings from the cognitive neuroscience and psychology literatures. 相似文献

An event-related potentials (ERP) study was undertaken to examine the role of prefrontal and parietal association cortices on selective attention and short-term memory functions in a duration discrimination task. Subjects performed better when discriminating the first stimulus relative to the second and not the reverse. Two contingent negative variations (CNV) were obtained for each stimulus duration at prefrontal regions, as well as two P300s at parietal regions. The CNV(S1) component recorded during the first stimulus (S1) appeared to be involved in selective attention at bilateral sites, while the P300(S1) component in the left hemisphere may be implicated in retaining it. The CNV(S2) wave, displayed during the second stimulus (S2), at bilateral sites and the right-sided P300(S2) wave seem to be implicated in working memory. The results indicate that recorded activity at prefrontal and parietal association cortices is tightly linked to task parameters and behavioral performances. 相似文献
