What is the value of having medical students engage in creative production as part of their learning? Creating something new requires medical students to take risks and even to fail--something they tend to be neither accustomed to nor comfortable with doing. “Making stuff” can help students prepare for such failures in a controlled environment that doesn’t threaten their professional identities. Furthermore, doing so can facilitate students becoming resilient and creative problem-solvers who strive to find new ways to address vexing questions. Though creating something new can be fun, this is not the main outcome of interest. Rather, the principle reason we recommend devoting precious curricular time to creative endeavors is because it helps medical students become better doctors. 相似文献

Family health history is one of the best predictors of an individual’s risk for common disease, yet it is underutilized in
routine care. Although the Surgeon General has recommended consumers record their family health history and share it with
their health care provider, providers’ perceptions of patient-generated family histories are unknown. To learn more about
providers’ experience with and perceptions about patient-generated family histories, we mailed surveys to 301 providers and
had a response rate of 24% (n = 68). Seventy-three percent felt a patient-generated computer pedigree would improve their ability to assess risk as compared
to their current methods. Seventy percent felt a patient-generated computer pedigree would either have no effect on or would
increase the number of patients that could be seen in a day. Results suggest that providers appreciate the potential benefits
of patient-generated family histories. Genetic counselors and nurses are in a prime position to promote and facilitate the

The current study examined the features of women with bulimic-type eating disorders (n = 24) attending primary care in two smaller urban regions of the USA. The assessment included measures of eating disorder
psychopathology, medical comorbidity, impairment in role functioning, potential barriers to treatment and actual use of health
services. Eating disorders, primarily variants of bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder not meeting formal diagnostic
criteria, were associated with marked impairment in psychosocial functioning. Although two-thirds of participants recognized
a problem with their eating, less than 40% had ever sought treatment from a health professional for an eating or weight problem
and only one in ten had sought such treatment from a mental health specialist. Only one-third had ever been asked about problems
with eating by a primary care practitioner or other health professional. However, more than 80% had sought treatment from
a health professional for symptoms of anxiety or depression. Most reported some degree of discomfort in discussing eating
problems with others, and half reported that they would not be truthful about such problems if asked. Having an eating disorder
was associated with several chronic medical conditions, including joint pain, gastrointestinal problems and fatigue. Although
the small sample size limits any firm conclusions, the findings suggest that the health burden of bulimic-type eating disorders
is substantial but remains largely hidden. Efforts may be needed to improve the eating disorders “mental health literacy”
of both patients and primary care practitioners in order to facilitate early, appropriate intervention. 相似文献

Four Os participated in a recognition memory experiment for a period of 5 weeks. The task required O to judge whether two temporally sequenced tones (ISI = 0.5, 2.0, or 8.0 sec) were the “same” or “different ” Latencies and confidence ratings were obtained for each judgment. TSD analyses applied to individual O’s data indicated consistent and rapidly decreasing d’s as a function of ISI. ROC functions generated from the latencies and ratings produced comparable results, indicating the feasibility of using latency measures along with the type of judgments made to obtain sensitivity measures. In 1964, Deso Weiss published his landmark text Cluttering, after much persuasion by Charles Van Riper to put his thoughts in writing regarding this enigmatic speech and language disorder (Van Riper, personal communication, 1992). To our knowledge, Weiss's book was the only book in English devoted entirely to cluttering. Nearly 30 years later, a second text entitled Cluttering: A Clinical Perspective was published (Myers & St. Louis, 1992). We describe a successful approach to teaching first-year undergraduates to produce World-Wide Web courseware. Students were responsible for coding, writing, graphics, research, and theory. We taught that courseware should elicit higher order cognitive processes such as problem solving, application, synthesis, and critical thinking in children. It appears that the exercise facilitated experiential learning, the application of theories of learning, and courseware and hypertext design, as well as promoting critical thinking in our undergraduates.
