An archival study was done of 500 medical records from a community clinic serving a low income predominantly Hispanic area of Los Angeles. The data collected included demographic characteristics and presented symptoms or reasons for visit, as well as diagnosis and treatment. The greatest number of patient visits were made for family planning services. A large porportion of the patients who received initial family planning services failed to return to the clinic for follow ups or additional supplies. A total of 208 pregnancy tests were performed in 151 of the 500 cases sampled. Of these, 152 were positive. The most frequently stated reason for requesting pediatric services was for physical exams, accounting for 30% of the visits. It should be noted that the discontinuity of care and insufficient utilization of preventive care seen in these results deserve serious attention by medical clinic administrators. The rate of patients who do not return for family planning after the initial visit is worrisome. A greater effort to attract women to family planning services at the time they request pregnancy verification could reduce the need for abortion of unwanted pregnancy. The data also indicate that changes in the wording of certain questions commonly asked of clients may be needed. This study allowed service providers to obtain important information about their performance, their needs, and the future direction that their services might take. This type of analysis is relatively low in cost and can yield important benefits, espicially if done on a periodical base in a search for policy implications.  相似文献

This paper presents a study of children's interpretations of prenominal modifier sequences like the one in ‘the second green ball’. Experiment 3 tests a set of hypotheses about the influence of certain syntactic variables in conditioning the children's misinterpretations. Experiment 4 is an attempt to check an hypothesis about the semantic complexity of phrases like ‘the second green ball’. Experiments 5 and 6 test the children's sensitivity to ordering constraints in different kinds of prenominal modifier sequences. The results are presented in Section 3 and discussed in Section 4. In the prospective paradigm, reproductions were longer if the liquid did not boil than if it did, and an interruption (task-unrelated questioning) shortened reproductions if the liquid did not boil but had no effect if it did. In the retrospective paradigm, if there was boiling or questioning or both, reproductions were longer than if there was neither. The present study compared the effects of two behavior management strategies on three types of student behaviors (appropriate, off-task, and disruptive). One strategy involved the teacher's verbally praising appropriate behaviors while concomitantly ignoring disruptive behaviors. The other strategy involved verbally praising appropriate behaviors while concomitantly issuing soft reprimands for disruptive behaviors. Six junior high school students in two general science classes were selected for the study on the basis of their frequent disruptive behavior. College-trained observers recorded target student and teacher behaviors daily. A multiple baseline design with reversals was usedto ascertain the effectiveness of the treatments. The results showed that both the praise-ignore combination and the praise-soft reprimand combination were substantially superior to baseline conditions. However, more rapid and slightly greater improvement was achieved under the praise-soft reprimand combination than under the praise-ignore combination. In contrast, improvement in behavior diminished less rapidly in the reversals following the praise-ignore phases than in the reversals following the praise-soft reprimand phases.  相似文献
