In prior studies, Shapiro and Goldberg (1986, 1990) failed to find a relationship between in-vivo ratings by children of treatment acceptability and treatment effectiveness. These studies involved the use of interdependent and dependent group contingencies designed to improve the spelling performance of sixth grade students. To investigate whether the failure to link treatment acceptability and effectiveness may have been due to the subjects' inability to understand the differences in treatment conditions, this study utilized a pre-intervention training package to enhance salient differences between two types of group contingencies. Results of this study showed that both group contingencies were successful at improving the spelling performance of students, particularly the poorer spellers. Prior to treatment, students preferred the interdependent condition, with the higher-achieving students expressing the strongest preference. After implementation of the training package, both conditions were now rated as equally acceptable. Pre- and post-test acceptability ratings of each condition tended to be significantly correlated but correlations between acceptability ratings and treatment effectiveness were negligible at all points in the study. There is considerable scientific interest in the psychological correlates of pro‐environmental behaviors. Much research has focused on demographic and social‐psychological characteristics of individuals who consistently perform such actions. Here, we report the results of 2 studies in which we explored relations between broad personality traits and pro‐environmental actions. Using a wide variety of behavior and personality measures, we consistently found moderate positive relations between Openness to Experience and pro‐environmental activities in both a community sample (Study 1: N = 778) and an undergraduate student sample (Study 2: N = 115). In Study 2, we showed that the effect of Openness on pro‐environmental behaviors was fully mediated by individuals’ environmental attitudes and connection to nature. Our findings suggest that high levels of aesthetic appreciation, creativity, and inquisitiveness, but not personality traits associated with altruism, may have motivated the performance of pro‐environmental actions among our respondents. This study examined whether the gender-typed play of young children varies as a function of family structure. Using a sample of 126 couples (44 lesbian couples, 34 gay male couples, and 48 heterosexual couples) located throughout the United States, with an adopted child between the age of 2 and 4?years old (mean?=?2.5?years), we examined parent reports of children’s gender-typed play behavior utilizing the Pre-School Activities Inventory (PSAI; Golombok and Rust 1993). Findings revealed that the perceived play behaviors of boys and girls in same-gender parent families were more similar (i.e., less gender-stereotyped) than the perceived play behavior of boys and girls in heterosexual-parent families (which were more divergent; that is, gender-stereotyped). Sons of lesbian mothers were less masculine in their play behavior than sons of gay fathers and sons of heterosexual parents.
